I KNOW THE ANSWER! OHMYGOSH. I FEEL SO SMART.

Well, North Carolina has a lot of tar, and it's spilled all over the ground and stuff. Back in the "old days" (like REALLY old) people down here were pretty poor, since they were all farmers. They couldn't afford shoes so they would go bare foot through woods, getting tar all on their feet. Tar stains, and it would stick on their feet and be oh so hard to get off. Thus, they'd be called Tar Heels

Ugh, you can't get the stuff up north. Whenever we go to New York, sweet tea is never on the menu :/ and then people come down south and have NEVER had sweet tea before. And I'm like "how have you lived this long without sweet tea?"
