The What's For Dinner Thread - March '11 (recipe index in OP)

.

We sold my Mom's house and the closing is tomorrow. I am a bit sad but glad a new family will enjoy it. My Mom built the house 50 years ago.

Vicb, how is your kitchen coming?
***
Dinner tonight is adobo marinated pork chops, rice and tossed salad. We have batting lessons late so it has to be easy.

Sorry about the house, that must be a bit tough on you. Thanks for asking about my kitchen. Everything is done except.... the hood vent for over the stove. We had to order one and it is a bit delayed. There are 2 rows of tile missing in that area that will be completed once the vent is installed. I am cooking in the dark with no light over my stove!:headache: My dinner tonight sounds a lot like yours!

I had jury duty this morning. After two hours, the officer came in and said we could leave because the case had been settled, so it wasn't too bad.

That was a good outcome for you. They always say that just by having citizens show up to do their duty puts pressure on the defendents to settle. I have been called to jury duty twice in the past 15 years and both times the same thing happened to me. My DH has been called twice and once made it into the court room but was excused when they filled the jury before getting to him.

I had "orientation" today for my new job at the public library. I had to go to the big downtown library but will actually be working at my neighborhood branch. I met two other gals who were hired for different locations. Each of us agreed we had one thing that was less than desirable about our job but took it just to get in the door (for them it was location, for me it was working weekends which hopefully will only be for the first month or two). Tomorrow is my last day on the old job!

Today was opening day of baseball... my fav team the Tigers lost :sad1: Opening day and tomorrow it is supposed to be snow showers, brrrr.

WFDT = something pork chops, considering the time (6pm) I think I might grill them with lemon pepper seasoning, salad, corn muffins and maybe some fried potatoes for the guys.

Hi everyone!
It is nice to meet you all.

WFD: one of us had leftover spaghetti, one of us had macaroni and cheese, and I had leftover potato chips! I may eat something after the Parent/Teacher conference.... :rotfl:

Julie

vicb - You must be getting excited about the new job! Hopefully you won't be working weekends for long.

Julie - Welcome to our group! I'm Kathy, I work part-time as a credit union manager. I'm married to Johnny and we have one son Kyle who attends the University of New Orleans and is a pitcher on the baseball team. Kyle will turn 21 in June so we're taking him to WDW in May for his birthday trip! I look forward to sharing recipes and chatting with you!:goodvibes

Hi Kathy! Sounds like a great family! I am assistant director of a college library in PA. So I get to do administrative librarian stuff and also teach a freshman writing course. We have a 12 year old son who LIVES for football right now. The son of one of my friends played centerfield for UNO -- he graduated about 4 years ago. How is Kyle and the team doing?

Ooohh, I will look forward to your trip report for Kyle's birthday trip! I hope my son continues to love Disney as much as we do.

I just got a new kitchen (and the trim work isn't even done yet), but I love to cook when I have time. So I am very excited to swap recipes with you all!!!!

Julie

Hi new to this thread. Vicb pot roast is my favorite with cooked carrots. I usually add potatoes to it and then mash them on my plate with butter and pot roast au jou.

WFD: baked chicken w/ garlic and rosemary seasonings, mashed potatoes, and mixed veggies.

Welcome!

Hey, The Oscars were so much fun.
The bairns ( and teachers) put in so much hard work and it showed.
The Boy had a blast, his film won the best action scene award.
It was done so well, there was 11 short films and 11 awards....and yip, each film won 1.
The boy had written his groups exceptance speech and it was nothin less than you would expect....he had the place in fits,he is such a performer.
I have put some pic's on FB.

Its been a long day with one thing and another so I have not read back.
Have a a good night lassies x

I saw the photos before I saw this. You could tell he was in his element, and I noticed the girls were eye-ing him! I was also looking at the background of the photos to get an idea of what the schools over there are like (typical teacher :rolleyes1) and our schools have a LOT in common!

My dog sat on the patio yesterday while 2 ducks sat in my yard not 10 feet away. She kept waiting for me to let her in because she knew I would feed them bread and she wanted to beg for bread more than chase ducks... sad and weird that's my dog. :upsidedow

That is hilarious! :lmao:

Kathy- I'm glad to here everyone is safe and Kyle stopped driving when the weather got really bad. It's a hard choice to make when you just really want to get home. We haven't had sloppy joe's in so long, I'll need to make them soon.

Lauren- I was a bit sad when my parents sold their house, they were in it for almost 40 year- but it is nice to have a family in it. It has acres and acres of land, and I love the fact that now kids are playing there again. The last few years my parents lived there, they were only there a month or so all year. I'm glad it's not sitting empty.

Laura- I can imagine how hard testing is for a boy! It sounds awful. My daughter finished and still had a hour until time was up. I think she would have preferred homework to sitting with nothing to do for an hour.

I was under the impression that Kyle didn't choose to stop; he was forced to by high water in the streets. :sad2:

The house sale does sound bittersweet. I can't imagine after 40 years; my parents just moved out of the house they lived in for 12 years. I only lived there for about 18 months, so I never really got too attached, but it's still a little odd. I will get to see their new house in 3 weeks!

I have to test 2 boys next week and then 2 other boys the following week. I'm not really looking forward to it, especially the 2nd set. It has nothing to do with behavior, but I know they are not anywhere close to ready for what the test covers, and it's going to be brutal for me to watch them struggle with it for a WEEK. :guilty:

Sorry about the house, that must be a bit tough on you. Thanks for asking about my kitchen. Everything is done except.... the hood vent for over the stove. We had to order one and it is a bit delayed. There are 2 rows of tile missing in that area that will be completed once the vent is installed. That's so exciting that it's almost done! When do they expect the hood to come in?

Oooh! The library! I used to live in Denver, and they have a really good library system. A lot of the branch libraries are historic, and I liked to visit ones in different neighborhoods. NYC has some really cool branch libraries also. As for New Orleans, the plans for the new libraries are nice, but they have yet to even break ground in my neighborhood. The library is operating out of a trailer at this point.

Hi Julie! Nice to "meet" you! I teach English as a Second Language at a school in the New Orleans area. I've been down here almost 2 years now. Before NOLA I lived in NYC, Denver, and southeastern Washington State. I have a husband and a dog.

Dinner tonight was just Burger King drive through. I got a single BK stacker, the value fries, and a value Coke. Woot. :upsidedow I worked until 5, then stopped by a friend's house until 6. Then I was very hungry. I was picking up a "Quick Guide to Japanese".

I had jury duty this morning. After two hours, the officer came in and said we could leave because the case had been settled, so it wasn't too bad.

I had that happen the first time and the second I ended up on the jury.

Dinner tonight was salmon, mac and cheese and asparagus.

Good Morning! Quick fly by...I have the guys coming to fix nail pops today. They are sitting outside. Not sure why they did not come in yet. Maybe having coffee...which I always offer...a million times!

Well, no one at my dinner last night except for me (Tom got home late and did not feel like eating, Andrew wasnt hungry and baby just had some pizza). The pork chops were so good! I marinated in adobo, lime juice, oregano and olive oil. I have a lot left but Andrew is flying to NJ later and Tom doesnt get thrilled with left overs.

I am gonna try the super sloppy joes Kat had yesterday. it will be something that I can make before going to airport.

Julie, I too, live in PA. I moved to the Pittsburgh area after growing up in NJ. Been here almost a year. I love PGH!

have a great day...guys are here!

Unfortunately, not too good. They're struggling but getting better! They are now a Div II school playing a Div I schedule which is very hard but the coach made the decision for the boys who decided to stay with the program and not transfer. It's given Kyle a chance to travel and play against the big schools. He was in San Francisco last weekend and is in San Diego this weekend!

I was under the impression that Kyle didn't choose to stop; he was forced to by high water in the streets. :sad2:

Unfortunately you are right and his car still won't start. We finally have some sun here today so hopefully it can dry out. We had someone come out and look at it and he said everything looks OK, just needs time to dry.

Your pork chops sound great! Hope you like the Joe's!:goodvibes

Tons of work & errands to run today, have to get my gym time in too! Going out for dinner to a Thai restaurant Sheryl told us about. Their signature dish is calling my name....Crab three ways....Crab cake topped with a soft shell crab topped with lump crabmeat...

Hi, Julie!

I'm Glynis. I'm a SAHM of 5 kids. Katie - 13 yrs., Jacob - 11 yrs., Leslie and Mary - 9 yrs., and Timothy - 2 yrs. I live in Utah, so WDW is not where we go frequently. I did go once, to run the WDW half in 2007. However, we do get to DL quite a lot! In fact, we're heading there the first week in August.

I'm one class and a practicum away from my Master's in Library Science. Hoping to pick up a job in the school library system once Timothy starts school in a few years.

Today is my bowling day. After that, I'm planning a stop at the library, a Barnes and Noble, and possibly the Sweet Tooth Fairy for a treat. Alan is home with Timothy today, so I have some me time!

Dinner for the kids will be ham fried rice, and I'm hoping to convince Alan that we need a night out by ourselves. I tried that last Friday, but the dreaded "man cold" had him feeling a bit off, so Jacob and I went out on a date. I'm hoping that Alan feels better by this evening, and is ready for some Thai or Indian food. I'm feeling the need for some curry or something similar!

THE SUN IS SHINING!!!

The sun is shining!!

OMGoodness the sun IS shining.

I can't believe it. I don't think it will last all day as we have storms predicted for later but for right now it is shining. We went 6 days with not seeing it. My mood is better already.

We bought our paint for the living room last night, so this weekend will be spent painting. I have Bunco at my house on April 12, and I really want it to be all pretty for my girls. New furniture is to be delivered on Friday or Saturday of next week. I can't wait!!

Our anniversary is on Monday (30 years) so the kids are taking us out for dinner tonight. I don't think Matthew is going to be able to make it, but 2 out of 3 is pretty good. I have no idea where they are taking us. We were told to be at Marty and Stephanie's at 7 and to dress smart casual.

WFDT ~ Out with the family. I love surprises!!

I will be back later today to catch up with all of you.

Glynis that is awesome!! There are so many benefits to being a school librarian...and having a schedule that jives with your kids' is huge. I considered doing that when a position opened up here, but I have it too good where I am and didn't want to lose that.
I'll be anxious to hear how that goes for you! What school are you going to for library science? I went to Pitt. as we are only a few hours away. Now they offer some of it online.

Julie

Bethany, are you learning Japanese?

Ellen, Happy Anniversary! I am jealous of your sunshine. ;)

Glynis, have fun bowling! I hope you get your date night.

Hi Julie! Nice to "meet" you. :)

Not sure what is for dinner, my brother in law was supposed to come out but I think there is a lot of snow where he lives so he might not be coming.

Julie

I've been doing my classwork online through my alma mater, Southern Utah University. They've been great to work with. As soon as Timothy is in preschool, I can do my practicum at my kid's school. I've worked it all out with the librarian there.

I am off today and usually like to cook something. But FIL called and invited us out to dinner tonight. That is out of the ordinary, but should be very nice. (I hope.) It is also MIL's last day of her part-time job, so we can celebrate her retirement too. Although FIL certainly wouldn't think about that.

WFD: ? OUT!

Julie- Enjoy your night out!

Ellen- So glad your getting some sunshine! Happy Anniversary.

Kathy- Hope you have a good night out too!

Bethany- Poor kids, my husband had alot of trouble in school no matter how hard he tried. It must be so frustrating for them.

Vic- Hope you have a good last day of work.

Laura- At my daughter's school they aren't allowed to do anything but check their work if they finish early. I don't understand, it's not like she is the only kid finishing. Glad jury duty went well for you.

Dinner tonight is chicken noodle soup and bread. For our birthdays my parents sent us a bunch of things from a Jewish deli they discovered in Florida, and the chicken soup if part of it. It looks really good and I thought it would be perfect on a wet, rainy (but not snowy!) day. Guess that's all the excitement going on here, have a great weekend all!

Julie, Welcome:cheer2: My name is Marisa and I am married to Jeff and we have one DD9, Kady. My mom NancyG56 is on this thread also. I work as a financial analyst at a large insurance company. Jeff works night so we dont get much time together as a family.

Today is my 10 year anniversary at work. Hard to believe I started here 10 years ago!!! I wish as my anniversary present they would let me leave early! :rotfl:

I have been so busy lately that I havent had much time to post, but I am reading along with everyone!

The testing at Kady's school does 1 test every day for two weeks. they last just about an hour so they dont have to be overwhelmed for two or three full days. She missed two days because she had the flu but only had to make up two tests. I think this works out better for Kady because she has test anxiety and full day of testing would throw her off the deep end :upsidedow

I made beef stew last night and Jeff said it was AWESOME! I dont eat red meat so I couldnt test to make sure the seasoning was right, so I borrowed my neighbor :lmao:

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Unfortunately you are right and his car still won't start. We finally have some sun here today so hopefully it can dry out. We had someone come out and look at it and he said everything looks OK, just needs time to dry.

Oh no... I sure hope it dries out and fixes itself! Have a great time tonight!

YAY for the sun!!! It's amazing what that can do to boost a mood, isn't it? What color are you painting your living room? I've been making a list of my next round of home stuff I want to do, which includes some painting. I need to set a date to have it finished - like have a party scheduled! - so I will actually do it. Otherwise, it's much easier to just sit and dream about it.

Happy early anniversary! So sweet of your kids to plan something - and I hope Matthew is able to make it afterall! Be sure and give us details when you get back.

Julie - so nice to "meet" you! I'm Aimee, I live in the DFW metroplex and am married with 3 dogs. I'm one of those "minister types" but I try to stay fairly anonymous online if possible. PM me if you want more details ;)

I am grocery shopping after meeting a friend for coffee this afternoon so I'll decide later what to make. Since we have dinner plans the rest of the weekend, it'll probably be whatever has the potential to go bad first

Glynis, I forgot to ask you about your Nook. I have just over 1200 books in EPUB format. If you let me know what you are looking to read, I might have it. Also if you have read some good books, please let me know because I am always trying out what to read next and could use some suggestions!!
