The What's for Dinner Thread - August 2014 (recipe index in OP)

WFDT? We had chicken pot pie and a salad.

More cold and rain here so pot pie seemed like a good choice. I am not complaining about the rain though because just north of us they are getting inches, yes you read that right, of snow. We have a chance of snow/rain mix tomorrow night blah. It is unusually cold here and I miss the sun.

SNOW!!! Oh the profanity!

Do you make your own Chicken Pot Pie or go with a pre made variety?

Sometimes I make it from scratch and sometimes, like tonight, I use Marie Callendar's. I keep a box of 8 I get at Costco in our deep freeze for those nights when I just don't have time or don't feel like cooking.

I always made my own, but on occasion when my Mom wanted one spur of the moment, I would pick up a Mrs. Budd's.

Marisa made a vegetarian Shepard pie for Kady using lentils in place of the meat. I guess it was delicious, but Holy Work!! S

Lentils are also great as a sub for taco meat in tacos!
Have Marisa look into something called TVP (Textured vegetable protein) to use in place of meat, and it will fool a few people into thinking it is meat, in things like tacos, meat sauce, pot pie, Shepards pie, etc..

Brandi- I use Bob's Red Mill TVP all of the time. I like it a lot and use it in my vegetable chile and some soups. WE have a coworker who is pretty persnickety and she had some of whatever TVP meal I brought in for all of us. I did nto tell her until she ate it becuase her first response to anything new is usually YUCH!!!

I wonder if it would make a good sub in my red sauce that is on my to do list for today? Buddy is watching his cholesterol which was super high, so I have been trying to add more whole grains, and reduce the meat and fatty condiments. I swear he drinks mayonnaise.

We use it in red sauce and it holds up well. I never use ground meat anymore. I get my TVP in bulk from Honeyville (amazon)

We also use something called soy curls. I get them from Butler's (Amazon), it is also like a strip of meat, David enjoys it as fajitas and in burritos.

I was saying "Yay!!" But I'm using my phone. Who knows what actually happens when I do this!

I am thrilled for you. I remember the renovation we did and that first meal was the best!
It is there it is just inside the quote, next to the gif.

....of course, we cracked open a bottle of wine for the occasion...

We are done and waiting on results. David is awake and in recovery. Thank you everyone.

Barrett's is still visible but has not increased since last time and he is cleared for 3 years this time, so good news.

Brandi - that is AWESOME news. Glad it's all clear for 3 years.

snow/rain

Oh no! Hope it warms up a bit for you.

SNOW!!! Oh the profanity!

I'm surprised the Dis filters don't work on that 4-letter word! :rotfl2:

I'm still waiting for DH to dropbox the pics for me. I don't want to sound like a 'nag' so I'm just going to wait until tomorrow and ask again. :rolleyes1

YAY! Congrats. I hope you'll update "that" thread so we can oogle over the new kitchen and appliances.

It's Sunday night here.

I finally made a batch of spaghetti sauce after talking about it during the week. It'll definitely be spaghetti bolognaise for dinner tonight.

Seeing that we're in the mood for food plans, here's mine for this week.

Monday's plan: I'm in the mood for a hotpot. For those that are reading along my Shanghai/HK TR, you'll know what this is. So, I might get some vegetables, mushrooms, eggs, noodles (need to check the health food store for something that DH can eat) and some chicken. I'll get some stock and use my rice cooker as the hot pot. DS and I can cook the chicken at the end; after DH has his fill of veg.

Tuesday's plan: DH will cook the baked potatoes.

Wednesday's plan: Dinner with mum.

Thursday's plan: Back to piano class. So, DS will want to head to the local ramen noodle bar.

Friday's plan: I'm meeting up with the Melbourne Dissers for dinner. Will eat whatever takes my fancy at the food court.

I'll worry about the weekend when it comes along. :)

Have a great week everyone.

This sounds like a great plan, and the hot pot sounds really yummy. Can you use some kind of five noodle or will it not stand up to the heat?
