The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Hi, we're back home. It is over and is wasn't quite as bad as last time. Hailey was scared again, but this time she had enough xanax so she didn't break out of the restraints. So I was able to help comfort her instead of having to hold her down.

Anyway, I have her settled here and I'm going to make myself a drink (or three). I promise to try and catch up tomorrow.

That's good, poor baby!

Have they tried giving her "laughing gas"? I knew someone whose child reacted the same way once and the next time they gave him that, she said he didn't care what they did to him. :hippie:

Nancy Yeah for Welby:cloud9: Nola can share her clothes with the baby. :thumbsup2. At the same time poor dad 2 girls :upsidedow He won't know what hit him :lovestruc.

Gretchen Glad that Hailey did ok. Enjoy your drink.

Vickie Sorry you are not sleeping. I have bouts myself I can so symphatize. Last night in fact I was staring at the ceiling.

Gretchen- Glad to hear that you both survived. Enjoy that cocktail!

Janice- you are killing my "lifestyle change" Buddy asked me if I was putting on weight!:headache::eek::scared1:. Now I want to make that pie and I know that it will not be pretty for Buddy if he tries to help me stay on track while it is on the counter!

Glynis- I think you are adding one more pie to that roster!

I need to lose weight too. I am not dieting until January though. I promished my friend I would make her daughter a birthday cake for tuesday and the desserts for Thanksgiving.

What probably will happen is I won't want to eat any cause I will be too tired from all the baking and prep work.At least that is my plan.;)

Gretchen, I'm so glad you were able to comfort Hailey. I was thinking of you all day. Enjoy your drink(s).

Nan, what time is the doc? Send Marisa my love.....tell her to rest!!!!
Another girl for Welby!!!! So sweet!

Glynis there is never enough pie!!!!

Kat, if Sheryl is not coming north wit you don't worry about having lots of company!!!! I'm sure I can speak for Nan, Marisa, Lauren & myself!!!!
Sorry your co-worker bailed.

Ann, hope there isn't a fever coming home to you!

Today I never made my stuffing. I made 200 handmade cards to send to the military serving in the Middle East....They are blank so they can send them to their families for the holidays...

Dinner tonight was ham & brie grilled sandwiches.

Kathy -- I'm so glad you will get so much time with Kyle!

Welby is having a girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought she wasn't finding out?? That is so great though. Nola will have a sister. I know I love mine!!

Gretchen -- I hope you are sitting with feet up and drink in hand. I'm glad Hailey did a little better this time.

Janice -- You are posting way too many yummy desserts lately.;)

Okay, I still have lunches to pack, clothes to get together, and an appropriate skating test outfit to lay out...I really don't want to be doing this at 5:30 AM. Oh, I ended up making seafood fra diavlo for dinner. Thanks again for all the good luck for Caili!

That is so nice of you Maria. I am sure the soldiers will appreciate them. All this love you send out will someday be returned to you.

You have to tell us why??????? :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

They have this "212" program thing at work. The premise is some quote that at 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212, it begins to boil, thus creating steam, which is powerful enough to power a train. When you see someone going "the extra degree" you can nominate them in this box and write up why. Each month, and email goes out to all the staff with a list of all the winners. You get to choose from some different things, like a coffee mug, pen, note cards, etc if you were nominated. Also, they draw names at random from all nominees for the 2 "Employee of the Month" parking spots. Those are not for the whole month anymore because so many people were getting nominated; now they are for about a week. I've heard that at the end of the year they draw names from all the nominations for the year for gift cards to area stores. :goodvibes

I've been nominated twice; once in September for helping someone with a bulletin board before school started, and once last month for working with a group of kids when someone else was absent. I've nominated a few people also.

DH had interview. It went well. Man told him their HR can move at a snails pace for first contact 2-3wks. He said once they send him for the drug test it will move quickly. He sounds positive. It wasn't advertised a guy he worked with before referred him. Prayers still please, hate to get false hope but it sounds like it could work out. They have Blue Cross which is so much better than our current crappy plan. But it would mean 3 more months of Cobra :headache:.

That sounds promising; I hope it works out!

Last nights call was one that shook me to the core. I shared with some of you that Greg has a very young second cousin who is now pregnant with her second child at age 19......over the summer she dangled the adoption carrot in front of our faces for weeks & then rejected the idea & is doing it again. Last night her Dad called on her behalf & said she wanted specifics about us & the legal steps she needed to take. At the end of the call she was going to go to legal aid & file the needed papers. We shall see......even if we got that far she has 25 days in the state of Virginia to change her mind after the baby is born & the father can also step in at that point. I never wanted to deal with the let down again & wish I didn't know about it at all.....
bbl

 I hope you don't get hurt this time. That is a very difficult situation.

I'm frying bacon again. Started with half the pack then realized, oh oh the house is going to smell like bacon! Threw in the whole pack! :lmao:

Bacon!

While getting my back piece tatt'd on me today, friend who I am trying to seperate from, went with me, with promises to stick around till it was done, but ditched me (there is a lot to this whole story, but let's just leave it as the camel's back is breaking from straws for now)...while taking a break about 2 hrs into it, I get a call from the V.Principal that Ross has been suspended for 1 day for (are you ready for this), defending himself against another kid who has been bullying him, and punched Ross today and got Ross in a headlock so Ross punched the kid back. We are supposed to be happy because both kids got the same punishment..Ummm no my child has the legal right to defend himself doesn't he? We were told that if Ross hadn't of closed fist punched then he would have only received detention. (I brought up about 2 boys only getting detention for fighting a few weeks earlier, and was told that they slammed a boy into a locker and that isn't considered fighting WTH?). So, needless to say Kris is going up at 7am to have a conversation with Mr Dugal! Ross reported this kids bullying to a teacher last week and today. GRRRRR!
I am now trying to get the daily things done around the house, as my tat took 6hrs..It does look amazing, my artist is just awesome and they are (thank goodness)like family, cause between the friend issue and Ross, I was a hot mess of emotions.(doesn't help I am pms'ing!!)

What an insane situation. :sad2: I saw the update; I am sorry the situation has not yet been resolved.

Please keep Jay and my family in your prayers, good thoughts or whatever you feel comfortable with. PLEASE!!

Jay starts flying from Bagdad today. He will go to Kwait and from there we have no idea. This of course is all up in the air and if the weather (sand storms) stay under control and he can get out. Last time he spent all night (literaly - in his sleeping bag) on the tarmac waiting for his plane.

It could take up to 3 days to get home. But his 2 weeks don't start until he sets foot on American soil. And pray that the FAA gets this glitch solved really fast. The trickle effect could put a damper on him arriving by Saturday.

Thanks everyone - you all were the first place I wanted to come this morning.

Well co-worker may not be interested anymore. I think her DH frowned on the idea. Now I need to find someone else to go with me! Ummmm....... Sheryl...wanna go with me? Don't really have anytime in mind. If there is a "cheap" season that's when I'll come.

What is this about you going to NYC? When are you planning on going? I migt have to tag along... :rolleyes1

Today I never made my stuffing. I made 200 handmade cards to send to the military serving in the Middle East....They are blank so they can send them to their families for the holidays...

That is so sweet of you! :goodvibes

Good luck to Caili tomorrow!

 about Hailey and the dentist.

I hope I didn't miss anyone or anything. I didn't post yesterday and you know how that goes! 7 pages behind. :upsidedow

I left work at 8:30 yesterday morning (I know, why bother even going?) because I had a migraine. It didn't ease up until around 2:30. I was able to address some of the Christmas cards. :thumbsup2 My only problem is that last year I used some of a few different boxes and this year I have some of the same cards left and I have no idea who got what! So I hope you all don't remember either because some people might get the same one as last year! Oops! :scared:

That boat sailed a long time ago....

:rotfl:

I will be back I promise!! Just wanted to give you a quick fill on the events from yesterday.
First let's just say that noone was surprised to see Kris stop in there this morning, lol. Ross still had a day suspended, because as he was informed "The policy is no tolerence no matter the reason if close fist punches are thrown" That being said Kris pointed out that there is also a no tolerence on bullying, hmmmm. Kris had the V.P. stumbling on his words there on that point, and Kris left it with Mr Dugal knowing that Kris was calling all members of the school board. They thought dealing with this Mama Bear was bad....Papa Bear is going to surprise them!

Exactly - good for him for pointing that contradiction out to them!

I was thinking of you both today. Glad it was less traumatic.

Welby is having a girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:woohoo:

I made 200 handmade cards to send to the military serving in the Middle East....They are blank so they can send them to their families for the holidays....

Any pics of the cards? 200 is a lot! That's a sweet gesture I would have never considered doing.

When I saw my granddaddy today after work, he was passed out. His bloodsugar was 31 and THEY did it! Obviously didn't get to talk much to him even once he came around so I will see him tomorrow.

We went to Chili's. We wanted BBQ (had coupon) but the line was long and not moving so we scooted down to Chilis. I was good at lunch and then completely blew it with dinner :confused3

Gretchen - glad you both survived. I hope the drinks helped!

Marilyn - congrats on the new computer!

Welby is having a girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does Welby know? :cool1: She doesn't lurk around here does she? I'd hate for her to find out that way. ;)

Glynis - guess you'll be adding a pie to the list! On the dishwasher - we have a Kenmore Ultra Wash. My husband picked it out and I'm not allowed to use it - "I never load it right" :rotfl: Glad all the painting is done and how sweet of you husband to hire a cleaning crew

I had started a diet last September and did really well for about 4 months; lost 15 lbs and hit a wall. I've managed to keep all but a couple pounds off and really want to get back on track after the holidays.

Maria - 200 hand made cards! Wow, thats not only impressive but incredibly awesome!!

Kathy, glad that Kyle will be home for a while, enjoy it!

Bethany congrats on the parking spot!

Aimee I'm sorry your Granddaddy is still in the hospital. I hope they get his surgar stabilized and he gets released soon. Also good to hear about your Dad, but not so much for DH. I know something will come along. I'd tell you to keep the faith, but I think you've already cornered that market.

So I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year which is fine - everyone contributes food so its no big deal for any one person. Our menu is still being adjusted but will include:
Turkey and gravy
Sweet potatoes
mashed potatoes
rice dressing
roasted broccoli and cauliflower
glazed carrots with cranberries
desserts (probably lemon meringue and pecan pies)
I might make some cornbread and andouille dressing and I haven't decided about snacks or appetizers. We'll have wine, soft drinks and ice tea, and coffee with dessert.

Right now we are at 11, possibly 13 adults and two kids.

For some reason I keep forgetting to post WFD.:confused3 so here's what we've done for the last few days :goodvibes
Tuesday we did macaroni and cheese with ham and broccoli. Wednesday, I picked up enough chinese food to feed an army (according to the restaurant owner!) since my son and dil were over. Today we picked up fried chicken. Tomorrow is Friday group dinner and as of last night the menu was still undecided (It's at DS/DIL house this week).
We've picked up slight colds as well. Bob and I both started Saturday with scratchy throats; he's fine now but Erin and I are both very hoarse and are coughing. Neither of us is really sick, just enough for it to be aggravating, and not feel like cooking, which is why we've had two takeout meals this week. Hopefully it'll stay like that and just go away.

It's late, I can't sleep even though I've taken my meds. & I'm really really confused! I tripped earlier this evening & now my whole body hurts.

I did understand Kathy want's me to go North??:confused3 More explanation needed please!

Nan, Please tell Welby congratulations!

Maria, 200 handmade cards! You are a saint!

Aimee, Prayers for your granddad!

Well I did find out I have a little more leeway (sp) with my menu. Unfortunately it's the dessert dept.! Baking doesn't allow much room for nanatizing!:upsidedow I can't find my very old first Disney cookbook! It's the one that had the great chocolate pecan pie from Narcoosee's I think! I wonder if it can be found on that other thread?

Just stopping in to saythat Marisa has a 9:15 appointment at Uconn. I will bring her home and Jeff will take her. She had a rough night I guess. Buddy got me up at 4 when she had given up and tried to get up. I made her toast so that she could take a pin pill but I think it is official. Tht nerve thing has worn off. I will check back and catch up in a few hours.

More rain today!!!!!!!!

Nancy, tell Marisa I hope she feels better soon.

Aimee, poor granddad. Sending prayers to him.

Nancy, congrats to Welby.

Maria, when do you leave Saturday? You are truly a gifted girl.

Well DSS said he will be here for dinner then he will go to his girlfriends after.
I better start some prep this weekend.

WFD- :confused3 I have to go to the store. I am thinking fish.
I was planning grilled pork chops but the rain changed the plan.

Just popping in a picture. I'll be back to catch up. Salmon with pomegranate glaze, edamame, and Armenian rice. It was delicious. The recipe is in this month's Food and Wine.
