The WDW Vets Head West! A DL May 2012 TR - Complete!

[And one of Grizzly River Run, which we never rode...
I guess that means you'll have to ride it on your anniversary trip.:rotfl2:

It looks like a great afternoon, aside from the diaper incident. I'm sorry he couldn't be a little more cooperative in that area. :rotfl2::lmao::rotfl:

DH said he is tired of missing out on fun rides because he doesn't like getting wet, so he has said he is definitely riding it this time! :rotfl: I'm game, hopefully he follows through with it. It just didn't sound appealing for either of us to ride first and then have to stand there soaking wet waiting for the other to ride. Now that we won't have to trade off, maybe it will be more of a possibility! And since we will be in California, we should actually be able to dry off without all that Florida humidity hanging around!

Yeah, well, diaper incidents come with the territory of being a parent, I guess. :lmao:

I completely agree. I love the rides, but hate walking around with wet clothes... and I don't want to have to carry a change of clothes around. I've bought some Under Armour heat gear clothes that I wear on "water ride" days. It is comfortable to wear in the parks in the heat, and it is great when you get wet, because it dries very fast. That and flip flops make it a lot more comfortable. :thumbsup2

Thanks for that info! Maybe I can get DH something like that so he can dry off quicker. I'm sure that would increase the appeal of water rides for him! :rotfl:

Thank you for the chapter links LOL - I just read the last 3 I missed out on. Looks like it was a wonderful day! Nice job getting that diaper done quickly and into the theater, but that is a long show. Too bad about the technical stuff going on, but you're right, it was probably nice to get out of the theater not in a huge mob!

Right after we left we turned around and noticed everyone with small kids was doing the same thing! Lol

DAY 4 Continued: Thursday May 17th

After spending our last moments in DCA, we were saying goodbye to that park and heading across the plaza to spend the rest of our final evening in Disneyland.

I think this was the day we ended up coming in on the tail end of the Flag Ceremony, which somehow I neglected to take pictures of?! It was really beautiful though. I made it in time for the National Anthem and to see them actually lower and fold the flag. I love patriotic stuff like that! Once it was over, we made a pass through the little art display museum thing on Main Street and got some pictures of the park tickets of the past.

What did we want to do first? Eat!

We ended up at the Village Haus restaurant because we thought all of their pizzas were flatbreads. Turns out only the barbecue chicken one is a flatbread, the pepperoni and cheese are just standard Disney pizzas. But we were there and hungry, so we ordered them anyway. The place was pretty empty since we eat so early, so I took DS to a table to get everything ready while DH ordered our food.

1326.jpg

Being silly!

Once DH was finished eating, he ran to grab me a Space Mountain FP while I finished feeding DS...He was supposed to get me a rider switch pass when he had ridden earlier in the day but forgot! We finished up before he got back, so we waited for him outside, and in no time, he was back and we were moving on.

We started walking and talked about taking a ride on Jungle Cruise, but the wait time was a little long. However, Big Thunder Mountain only had a 10 minute wait, so DH decided he wanted to ride again.

1330.jpg

In the meantime, the Mark Twain Riverboat was about to leave for its last sail of the evening, so I took DS for a ride.

1338.jpg

Boy did he LOVE going up and down those stairs! He found an older boy that caught his attention and was trying to chase him around the top deck, which meant I was chasing DS the whole time. The scenery was so pretty, I wish I could have gotten some pictures. But trying to hold on to DS and a camera and keep them both from falling in the water was just too difficult a task for me. :rotfl: It was a pretty long ride, so DH was waiting for us when we came off the boat.

It was about parade time, so we made our way over to Main Street to see if we could get a decent view. SO glad we did this! DS absolutely loved it! He was clapping and dancing along with the music. I mean, just look at the smile on his face!

I got a really cute video of him dancing on DH's shoulder too.

I am so short, so these pictures of the actual parade are not all that great, but I did what I could.

We were starting to drag after 4 days of early mornings and late nights, so we were ready to pack it in, but first, I wanted one last ride...So DH took DS shopping while I got to use this.

1381.jpg

I met back up with them, and we headed down Main Street, dragging our feet a little bit. We thought it would be a LONG time before we would be back in Walt's Park, but now, DH and I will be there in just 36 more days! At the time, we didn't know that though, so it was really killing us to have to leave. To prolong the inevitable, DH took some pictures of the display windows on Main Street documenting different periods of Disney animated films.

We didn't head back to the resort just yet, but unfortunately, we did put away the cameras so I have no pictures of the rest of our evening. Since we hadn't spent much time there at all, we decided to spend a little time at Downtown Disney before totally calling it a night. First up, we stopped at World of Disney and made a few more purchases. I got 2 t-shirts for myself, one for Paxton, and one for my sister as a thank you for bringing us our car key and saving us from being stranded. DH bought himself 3 Vinylmations.

We walked around some more, enjoying the nighttime entertainment going on. We stopped in Haagen-Dazs for some ice cream! I got chocolate chip cookie dough (my favorite!) in a waffle cone, while DH got a really delicious brownie a la mode sundae. He was nice enough to give me a couple of bites. Our only other shopping stop was D Street where DH bought a couple more Vinyls. Then it was sadly time to go. We took our last tram ride back to the resort for our last night at Dolphin's Cove. Once DS was bathed and put to bed, it was time to face the worst part of a Disney vacation...packing!

However, even though we were leaving Disneyland, our vacation wasn't over just yet! I hope you'll stick around as I do a pretty quick re-cap of our few days in Seattle. We had a lot of fun with DH's family that I'd love to share! If I lose you here though, thanks for reading along with the Disneyland portion! I'm still going to do a post of my DL thoughts and of course, our souveniers (I have pictures of almost all of them except for one of DS's shirts, but it's hanging in his closet and he's napping at the moment!).

Wow, what a great trip report! I can't believe you're going back so soon already! Paxton is so cute! Can't wait for the rest!

Love those windows! Nice shots. We'll have to look for them.

And here's a Facebook-style "Like" for Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavor :thumbsup2

I will stick with the TR through to the end. Always interested in seeing new places. Of course as you know we will be out of touch for a bit, but will probably keep updated through Tuesday.

I can't believe it either, honestly! :lmao: But I'm REALLY excited that we will get to experience Cars Land after missing out on it by just a few weeks last time.

Thank you!

The windows were great! I wish we had remembered to get pictures in the daytime when you could see them better and without all the lights from across the street interfering. Hopefully they are still there!

Yes, your trip is so close!! The thread will still be here when you get back. :thumbsup2

I forgot to say my ultimate favorite ice cream is cookie dough too! So delicious, it's the best ice cream flavor EVER created.

More wonderful pictures of Paxton. He just looks so happy to be there. :goodvibes

I forgot all about Seattle! Tell me, how did you manage to plan a return trip to DL so quickly.

Those shadow boxes are so cool..

I am definitely planning a trip to DL. I have to see it and, you're right, it really is Walt's park.

I enjoyed your take on Disneyland, and I look forward to seeing what you have to say about your adults only trip.

It looks like it was a fun trip for all 3 of you, and I'm glad you were able to share some of the similarities and differences between the east and west coast parks. One of these days I hope to make that trip as well. :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 I was sooooo bummed that I couldn't eat it during my pregnancy, because all I wanted was sweets! My inability to have my favorite ice cream led me to having cheesecake at every opportunity instead. :rotfl:

More wonderful pictures of Paxton. He just looks so happy to be there. :goodvibes

I am definitely planning a trip to DL. I have to see it and, you're right, it really is Walt's park.

He is a really happy kid most of the time, and he seems to really LOVE being in Disney parks with us! I'm trying to raise him right!! :lmao:

As for the return trip, DH and I were planning a 4-day weekend trip to WDW to celebrate our 5 year anniversary and take full advantage of these Premier APs. Then he started researching another DL trip and it wasn't going to be much more expensive than going to WDW. And when we broke down how much time we would have at either place, California surprisingly won out! So we went ahead and booked it. :goodvibes

Although it's vastly different in many ways from WDW, there is something about DL that hooked me immediately. Knowing Walt actually walked around there and had direct input on so many elements is so cool and interesting for a Disney lover. And I loved that after so many trips to WDW and feeling like I know it like the back of my hand, here were two brand new parks for me to explore!

Great updates! Paxton looks like he was having the time of his life!

:goodvibes I like to think he was! And I'm hoping that he will love WDW even more this time come October. Last year he definitely enjoyed himself, but not to the degree that he did in May when he was a little older and more aware.

:thumbsup2 Glad you enjoyed it! It was a GREAT experience, and I'm happy we get to do it all over again just the two of us. Hopefully you can get there soon. It's really amazing, and although getting there is a little more difficult, once you are there it is so much easier to manage with small kids than WDW is!

So to wrap up the DL portion of this TR, I thought I'd post some of my final thoughts, especially concerning WDW vs. DL.

1. CROWDS
Well, it was certainly more crowded than I had expected, especially since we were going during a time when school was still in session and we were there only on weekdays. However, despite the amount of people in the parks, the wait times were not bad at all. We were able to accomplish everything we set out to do attractions wise and then some. Our use of FP was mainly to use as means of "rider swap" so we could each go through the line quicker while the other waited with DS, not so much because the lines were long. It reminded me a lot of our trip to WDW in December a few years ago. We were practically tripping over the people everywhere, but the ride lines were 20 minutes or less. :confused3 Whatever it is, it made for a very enjoyable trip that we were able to hop from attraction to attraction without extraordinarily long waits, especially since our time there was fairly limited.

2. WEATHER
OMG...fabulous! Coming from south Louisiana where it was already hot and humid as all get out in March, leaving that behind for a week was incredible. The lack of humidity made all the difference in the world! In the middle of the day, it would get pretty hot, but we were not drenched in sweat and feeling like we were in a sauna. Plus, I loved that it actually cools off there when the sun goes down. That was a welcome relief. I did get sunburned even though I was very vigilant about putting sunscreen in the mornings and when we were going back to the park from our break. Not bad though, just enough to notice I was bright red in some spots while still my typical bright white in others. :rotfl:

3. RESORT
We really enjoyed our stay at the Wyndham Dolphin's Cove. The proximity to the parking garage was great! Had we gone without AP's to cover the parking fees, it probably would have been better for us to stay somewhere closer and within walking distance to the parks. However, the room was just perfect for the three of us. The only things I didn't love about the units were the lack of central air (I understand this is common though in California accommodations) and washer/dryer in each unit. Especially now that we travel with DS, we like being able to throw in a load of laundry at least once during a trip. The laundry facilities there were kind of a joke since there were very few machines and almost half weren't operational. The window a/c unit was great for making enough noise for DS to sleep through the outside noise, but not so great for cooling off our bedroom! The resort itself though was pretty great. Though it didn't look like there was a lot of parking at first, we never had a problem getting a space close to our unit. And the outside facing units were never a problem with noise like we have experienced at some other Wyndham resorts. There were also plenty of restaurants close by, and it was a 5 minute drive to Target for our groceries. Overall, a pretty great resort! I would love to stay there again someday.

4. WDW vs. DL
Before visiting DL, I'll admit it, I was skeptical that it could ever measure up to WDW. How could it, when it only consists of 2 parks compared to WDW's 4? Now, I will admit that I was totally wrong! Despite having "only" 2 parks, DL and DCA pack in a surprising amount of attractions and entertainment! We enjoyed that there were so many more attractions to experience at DL that aren't available in MK, and that DCA was an entire park (with the exception of Soarin', TSM and ToT) of brand new attractions! There was so much to do with DS! We especially loved Bugs Land because he just had a blast on those attractions.

DL really stole my heart with its charm. And it was fun to go through a Disney park again and not know it like the back of my hand. It was kind of fun to be a "newbie" to a Disney park again after being to WDW so many times. It was a little disconcerting at times (ie. trying to find Indiana Jones at night by myself :rotfl:) but fun at the same time.

I think overall, DL wins when it comes to traveling with a toddler. Despite the much longer travel time to get there, it is SO much easier to park hop with a little one at DL when you can just walk between the two parks instead of having to get back to the car when we were ready to go somewhere new. We didn't really have to plan exactly where we were going to be in the morning and afternoon like we do in WDW. We can change our minds on a whim and just walk across the promenade to the other park whenever we wanted!

I don't think I could really choose which one "wins" when it comes to best overall experience because despite how much they do have in common, they are such different vacations and experiences, it's not really a fair comparison. I really love both! I'm so glad we took this opportunity to experience DL now while DS is little instead of waiting until he (and his future sibling(s)) are grown, because there were so many attractions we probably would have skipped if going only with older kids. :goodvibes

However, I can say that despite my intense love for Wishes, World of Color wins hands down as the BEST Disney parks nighttime experience I have ever seen! Absolutely LOVED it, and wished we could have seen it more than once on our trip. We will be making up for that by seeing it as many times as possible on our anniversary weekend!

5. SOUVENIRS
And now for the stuff we bought on this trip! I admit, it was a lot because we didn't think we'd be back for a long long time. Normally I post them throughout the trip report as we bought each souvenir, but this time I didn't get around to taking pictures of everything soon enough.

DS modeling his other shirt. Sorry it's kind of blurry, you have no idea how difficult it was to get this picture this morning!

Other things we bought but didn't get a picture of was a onesie for my godson, a v-neck Mickey top for my sister, and DS's postcard. I can't put my finger on its location at the moment, but it was a picture of Sleeping Beauty Castle. We were disappointed in the lack of Cars Land stuff available, but now that we are going back, that shouldn't be a problem again!

Now, to start on the Seattle portion of the trip...

DAY 5: Friday May 18th

I'll say in advance, this update will be more wordy than pictures, but we got more throughout the weekend. I'll be using more smilies to make up for the lack of pics. :thumbsup2

After 4 days of early mornings and late nights, we let ourselves sleep-in Friday morning. We had decided there just wasn't enough time to get to the parks in the morning before leaving for the airport, so we weren't really in a rush. We let DS wake us up, which was around 7:30 am. (Yes, for us, that is now "sleeping in"! :lmao:). We made some cinnamon rolls and sang Happy Birthday to DH, who was turning 28 that day!

Once we were done with breakfast, we finished packing and cleaned up the unit before getting dressed. We checked out and left the resort around 9:30 am to head back towards the airport. We had to drop off our rental car and catch the shuttle back to LAX, which luckily took a LOT less time than it did on our incoming flight!

We got dropped off at the airport and went to the Virgin America counter. The attendants there were a trip! There were at least three women who were having a blast with DS dancing and getting him to wave his arms while he was in his stroller. He of course ate the attention up! He is such a ham! The process at the counter was super quick and easy. There wasn't anyone waiting, but there was still an attendant there to help you get your boarding passes and direct you to another attendant to have your bags weighed and checked. Very quick & easy process, and we were off to security!

We were expecting a huge security line...after all, this is LAX, one of the busiest airports in the country (world?)! We had NO wait at all for security! And there was hardly anyone behind us, so we didn't feel rushed at all, even with all of DS's crap that needed to go through. Unfortunately, once through security, there weren't many choices for lunch in our terminal, so we settled for Burger King, then went to find our gate.

DS had a blast running around and playing, which was accomplished because there weren't too many people in one of the seating areas for him to bother, so we let him have at it and burn off some energy.

1400.jpg

He made friends with one lady who won his little heart by letting him type on her laptop! While we were waiting, I noticed a guy that I was (still am!) convinced is an actor! At the time, his faces looked SO familiar, but I couldn't place him or think of his name. DH even tried discretely holding his phone up and doing a search using the guy's face, but nothing came up. :lmao: After we had been home a few weeks, it came to me and I'm almost positive the guy was Billy Campbell! DH thinks I'm reaching, but I could swear it was him! If nothing else, that's who he reminded me of.

After our "celebrity" sighting, we boarded the plane and got DS settled in his car seat. They started boarding late, so by the time we took off, we were about 30 minutes behind schedule. The flight was great, no complaints about Virgin America except that DH had a hell of a time getting the car seat down the aisle! It was obviously narrower than most other airlines because they advertise giving you more seat room. The little screens for ordering snacks and drinks on all the seat backs was pretty cool too even though we didn't order anything. It was a shorter flight, only a couple hours, and we landed about 3:45 in Seattle.

DH's Aunt J arrived to pick us up at 4:20, but instead of heading to her house on Camano Island, she decided to take us out to a camp of sorts where her husband was with their dogs and their RV while the dogs were competing in an agility competition. It was about an hour drive and DS knocked out in the car. He didn't wake up when we stopped, so we rolled the windows down and left him in his seat while we sat around outside and talked. Luckily the weather was really cool there and there was plenty of breeze to keep him from getting hot in there! Eventually he woke up and had fun playing with the dogs (and their toys) in the RV. We ordered pizza for dinner, and sang Happy Birthday to DH again, this time with cupcakes!

1401.jpg

DS had fun running around and playing in the gravel there and seeing all the other dogs walking around. We didn't leave to head home (Uncle B and the dogs were staying, so just the three of us and Aunt J were going to the house) until 7:45 which is usually about close to DS's bedtime. So I had a heck of a time keeping DS awake in the backseat so he wouldn't be wired when we got home after taking another "nap." It was almost 9:15 before we got home and got him a quick bath. We put him to bed in the darkest room in the house, the media room, because Aunt J warned us the sun starts coming up there around 4:30 am and we were just NOT going to have him waking up that early! :rotfl: Luckily, the media room has no windows!

We hit the bed around 10:30 pm ourselves. We were ready for a weekend having fun with the family!

UP NEXT: Exploring the "Island"

Thanks for the wonderful comparison between WDW and DL. As I am sure I've mentioned, I really want to visit DL now. I am subbed to three TRs focusing and DL and it looks like such an awesome place. I'm thinking 2014. It's great to know there are so many convenient places to stay within walking distance, although I could also use my DVC points there.

Happy BD to DH! Don't you just love how easily little kids make friends wherever they go. Paxton looks like he is having a ball!

Nice WDW vs. DL comparison. I think it would be a lot of fun to be a "first time vistor" as well.

I'm glad your airport experience and flight went smoothly. :thumbsup2

Yay, awesome souvenirs!

Loved your comparison of WDW and DLR. So happy to see you didn't pick one over the other. You are right, they are just different experiences. Nice to enjoy them both in their own unique ways!!

I am itching to go back to my 'home' and see DLR. Probably another year or two. Can't wait to see WoC and glow with the show!
