We have been looking forward to this cruise for more than a year. It all started back in December of 2007. We were still flying high 11 monts later from our very first cruise. We did the Western Caribbean itinerary in January 2007. We had a blast. So, I contacted my TA, Coleen Bolton of Mouse fan travel and booked another. This time we booked the 1-17-09 Eastern Itinerary cruise.

So, there is a small intro and I will not waste your time. Here s a breakdown of the trip.

1/16/09-fly out of JFK, NY, (JetBlue) and into MCO (Orlando). Check into the Hyatt at MCO and rent a car. Drive down to Sun City Center and visit my elderly aunt and then back to the airport to sleep.
1/17/09- bus to terminal from the Hyatt
1/17-24/09- Cruise the Disney Magic and experince their Eastern Carribbean itinerary.
1/24/09- fly back to JFK

Cast- Me- Tim, Wife- Mary, twins James and Moira both 7 years old.
Stateroom- Cat. 3 (Concierge) Rm. 8548, deck 8

So, now that you know what's up I will try and get this report out as soon as possible. I have more than 300 pictures and plan to post a lot of pictures. So stay tuned and follow along with our memories.

Tim

Can't wait to hear more! My brother and I are going on our first 7 nighter next January, on the Eastern 1/2/09! I can't stand that it is a year away but I'm really looking forward to learning a lot between now and then, especially from others' TR's before we go! Looking forward to your report!

This was our first cruise and we all loved it....2 adults and 2 kids (3,4).
The food in the dinning rooms was great and our servers Romeo and Collin were awsome! Cant wait to hear what others thought of this cruise.

Welcome everyone and I hope I don't bore too many of you.

In the early morning hours of January 16, 2009, our family sprang into action. Well, ok more like sauntered into action because hey, it was about 4:30am. Mary, was up until about 2am getting the last packing touches and the house in order. She is the best. She always takes care of packing up the kids and herself and gets the house ready for us to go. I have the easy job, getting the reservations in order and making the itineraries...poor me.

So about 5am the limo pulled up and we packed everything in. Before long we were off the New York City's JFK airport and to the new JetBlue terminal building. Because this was a Friday, I wanted to get to JFK before any traffic hit. I knew that if we left any later than 5:30am we would have a tough time getting to the airport with enough time to spare. But, we were on time and roaring down the highway. Everyone was real excited to get on the plane and heading off to start our second Disney Cruise. We sailed on the Jan.13, 2007 Western and had a category 6 that time. We saved and scrimped even foregoing our DVC vacation last year and took the opportunity to jump up a few notches and reserved a category 3 one bedroom suite.

We finally arrived at the airport and it was really time to get going. It was like 5 degree outside so Mary and the kids headed off inside the terminal while I struggled with the bags. OK, I do have another job and that is to struggle with the bags. It's usually not that bad because I just strap them together and they come along like little doggies. But, I never tried to maneuver around JetBlue's new revolving automatic door. Don't hit it the door will stop, don't come to near it the door will stop, it seems if you look at it the door will stop. So now I am trapped in there with 5 luggage bags and my family is on the other side. We are not going anywhere we are going to miss our flight. But, here comes Mary to the rescue but wait now it seems she is arguing with someone. Oh Oh I better get out and finally I do. But, they are still going at it. The worker was rude and told Mary to get away from the door but not in a such nice manner. Mary, a stubborn and very tired Irish women would not take that. So I played peace maker and we finally headed over to check in for our flight. First major catastrophe averted. We ate breakfast and got in our seats on the plane and we were in the air right on time.

The flight was uneventful and was full of me doing homework with the kids. Better to get it out of the way then to waste time doing it while there is fun to be had. So, my two little first graders made like busy little beavers and continued to do homework for most of the flight. Moira didn't finish but there would be time later in the week to complete it. Plus I didn't want them spending all of the flight doing it. We landed and made our way up to the Hyatt at MCO. They now have a concierge service and handle all of our requests prior to us getting there. What was great is that they had a room ready when we checked in at 10:30am. Outstanding....and they were going to pick all our bags up at JetBlue for us. Another great thing...we hardly handled our luggage all week but more on that as we go. We went up to the room, washed up and headed back down to Dollar Rent a car. Mary and the kids relaxing in our room.

All I can say is holy crap, the line was 50 people deep for Dollar. What were they giving cars away for free or something? Thank goodness I am a Fastlane Express member and got into another line that had 1 person in it and that was me. Right up and right into getting my car. We headed across the street and hopped into a bright red and shiny Dodge Charger. It will do and before lone we were headed south on our way to Sun City Center to visit my just about 90 year old aunt.

The trip took us about 1 ½ hours and we stayed and visited for a little while before we headed out to lunch. We went to a place about 15 minutes away. I think it was called Little Harbor. There were many newly built condos and a hotel. There was a restaurant and we had lunch there. It had an outside bar and eating area but it was way too cold to stay out there. Man didn't we leave the cold. It was only about 50 degrees here. As we ate we looked across the water and we could see Tampa. What a great view. Here are some pictures of the kids and my Aunt Ronnie.

Before long we were done and went back to her house for a little while long but I was starting to get tired and figured we better leave so I didn't fall asleep driving. We headed back up to Orlando by 6pm. But we did make a pit stop...maybe some of you know where I may be going with this. Now I did mention earlier that we are Disney Vacation Club members and that we missed our trip last year. We own at the Beach Club Villas and one of our favorite places is Beaches and Cream. This place, if you don't know, is a throwback to your old ice cream shops. The have great ice cream and serve lighter fare like burgers and such. It is small and the seating is limited but it is a great spot for ice cream, which is what I mentioned to Mary a couple of days before the trip. But, she said no let's just go back. Well, on the way back she nudged me as the kids played the Nintendo Ds's, “Hey, let's make that stop you were talking about.” No sooner did she mention it did I make the necessary adjustments and headed toward WDW.

The great, ok maybe not great, thing about those games the kids were playing is that they are occupied. Which helps when you need to sneak and do something. But, in a car it may be difficult. We didn't want to have the surprise be given away by them seeing all the signs. So, we headed quietly through the WDW property, past the welcome sign, past the Hollywood Studio signs, past EPCOT signs, made the left toward the Swan and Dolphin hotels. Now this is big because if they would have seen any of it the surprise would be gone but nothing...no comments, no questions just beep beep beep of their games. We have been down to WDW about 10 times since their first trip at about two so they are experts. We the guard both and they ask me for ID and I hear from the back...”huh, where are we?” Nothing from us, we pull in the lot to the right park and the kids quickly get out and start with the questions. All I do is point and they see the Beach Club Villas and I tell them its ice cream time. They immediately start saying “oh Dad you tricked us, how did you do that?” I think, hmmm very easy thank you Mr. Nintendo. We headed into the lobby and sit and wait for Mary who just needed to make a pit stop. As you can see the kids seem very relaxed, as do I.

Beaches and Cream had no seating available for tables but they did have some spots at the country. That was good enough for us as we only wanted ice cream anyway. Mary and I shared a No Way Jose. Our favorite and the kids got some ice cream of there own. Here they are at the counter.

Before long we were off and headed back to the airport, really this time. But not before the kids hid some shells in one of the many bushes near the Beach Club. We will try to go back and see if they are still there when we vacation in October at the Beach Club Villas.

We reached MCO and returned the rental and were up in our room by about 9pm or so. Mary went to the gym and I stayed with the kids. By the time she got back the kids were asleep and I was just about there. A long day but a fun one.

Next installment: the fun really starts....

So excited to read your posts. We are doing a Western Cruise in July. My second cruise since my first one was the EB Panama Canal Cruise - now I'm hooked...pirate: Dkids, DSL, and son's girlfriend have never cruised. I have a Cat 3 reserved ( one of the suites in the middle of the ship) and a cat 7 SV room. Want to hear some one's opinion on the Cat 3 and if it is worth the extra money. If I don't do the cat 3 I'll have to do two cat 7 and an inside room. I know I can book earlier and it might help get my DD and DSL get the same Palo and excursions as the rest of us...if I keep the cat 3. Thanks for any tips or suggestions...:wave2:

Subscribing! DH and I are going on an Eastern cruise 2/27/09... looking forward to hearing about your cruise!

Thanks for the kind words. I will definitely be breaking down how we felt about the Category 3 room as we go along. There will be both good and bad. Yes, I know bad what can be bad. Well, you will have to wait and see.... The last time we had a category 6, rm 6062 and this time we had a cat 3 room 8548.

I really enjoyed the Eastern cruise. You should have a great time. We hit St Maarten and St Thomas. I will let you know which one is better although I really surprised myself with a purchase in St Thomas.

Tim

It is all your fault.

Yours was the first trip report I read back in 2007 when I started looking into DCL and you made it sound like so much fun. March will be trip number 3 for us.

Looking forward to reading your report.

Loving your trip report! I really enjoy trip reports with details and pictures! Can't wait to read more! :cool1:

Great start! I'm so excited to read your report as DH and I are going on the 2/14 Eastern for our honeymoon! :cool1: Your TR is the perfect thing to hold me over until then :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

Also, by any chance do you have any of the navigators from the cruise? I am an OC planner  and would love to know what activities are available :beach:
You have a lovely family! Can't wait to read more! :thumbsup2 :coffee:

As a matter of fact, I kept everything. The navigators, the menus for the restaurants, I know the beers for the two tastings, just about everything. Just let me know what you want to hear about. I will try to scan some of the navigators as we go along also.

Still haven't tried the Kitchen Sink but maybe one of these days. My kids would need to get bigger and help me with that one.

love you report AND your surprise.....our kids are older and we can't pull these surprises on them. I remember one summer, when they were little, we get them up in the middle of the night (we USED to drive to Disney) and told them we were going to Disney! MAN, that was so much fun.

Please, continue your report (and I love when you post pictures):cool1:

Well, I did promise everyone a DCL trip report so I guess here we go...

(Mind you, I will be posting a lot of pictures, navigators and other items for everyone to see. This will be for everyone who is going, thinking of going, or who has went. If you are not interested just skip over them. But, it may seem like the report is long. Too bad...)

So, as I was saying, we spent the night at the Hyatt at MCO. While there may be less expensive ways or closer ways to stay, I think this is by far the most convenient. In addition, it puts you almost in the mood right away. In fact, once you enter into the hotel there is a big sign in front of the desk that welcomes cruisers and lets you know to tell the staff you are cruising.

We woke up and got ready. The sign-ups for the buses start at 9am and while I was looking forward to getting there all I wanted to do was make sure we arrived at the port by 10:30-11am. Didn't want to be waiting around that long (Mary would kill me and the kids would drive me crazy). We went down and hit Hemispheres, which is the Hyatt's restaurant, and had some breakfast. Mary and I had the buffet and the kids had some pancakes and eggs. Although, they did not each much. Around 9 I headed down while everyone else finished up the breakfast. We were told to leave our luggage, with our Disney tags inside our room, so we were all set there. (Note: this is a change from last time because last time we had to leave our luggage outside the room. I was told that people felt nervous about their luggage so the Hyatt changed the policy. Can't argue with that, very smart.)

I headed to a conference room by McCoys Bar and Grill (another restaurant in the Hyatt, which is very good.) and waited for a very short time. They were just finishing the first bus assignments and I heard them tell the last person that the bus will be called by 9:15am. Wow, that's quick especially because it was 9:10. I checked in and was told we were on the Pluto bus and that we would be called at 9:30am. I thought oh man, I wasn't ready for this to be so soon. We didn't leave last time until about 10 so I ran upstairs and got the family, paid the bill, ran to the room and got our carry-ons and ran downstairs. Phew, just in the nick of time, we had about 5 minutes.

Here are some pictures as we waited in the Hyatt's lobby.

Mary and Moira just relaxing in the comfy couches of the Hyatt's lobby

James checking out a ship in a glass case in the lobby of the Hyatt

Of course, this was plenty of time for Mary who decided to make a quick stop downstairs. But, within a couple of minutes our bus was called. Man, I will never learn. It never fails, the same thing happened last time and we ended up missing the bus and had to take the next one. I knew she had gone downstairs to the front of the hotel so I took the kids and their bags and we headed for the elevators to go down to the bus. When we got down there no Mary, so back up on the elevator to the lobby. When we got there, no Mary. OK now I lost my wife. Where could she be when all of a sudden I hear someone calling my name and there is Mary in the elevator with the door closing on her. She was able to escape and make it to us. Crisis averted and we headed to the elevator with our Pluto bus companions and got on the last elevator down. We walked outside (still a little chilly by Florida standards-60's) and see that beautiful white, red and black bus with the port hole windows. What a sight. Soon, we are herded onto the bus, in our seats and on a 45 minute to an hour ride to Port Canaveral.

During the bus ride, they play the obligatory Disney video telling you about all the good things and pertinent information you need to know about the embarkation and the cruise itself. Obviously Mary knows it all because she is snoozing away without a care in the world. I wish I was joining her but my sweet little James is so excited he is talking non stop. Oh well. Soon we hit the bridge and our bus driver let's everyone know that once we hit the top of the bridge the ship will come into view. We hit the top and out of the distance like something Magical (pun intended) we see her. The Magic. It is really happening the cruise is here, all the waiting and planning is going to pay off. Soon, we are pulling up into the cruise docks and the Magic is in view.

Here are some of the sights you will see as you come upon her.

You can see Disney's temrinal in the right side of this picture

Next up: Check in, boarding, and what to do because it is way to cold to swim...

We pull up into our space and collect our carry-ons. I really do love that I have no luggage. It just makes it seem so much like vacation (as long as it gets to me later, I guess). We head through security and up the flight of stairs and we are stopped by a very nice cast member who welcomes us and asks if we had all our paperwork. I assure her that we do and she starts talking to James who is holding his Sea Otter webkinz. They start talking about webkinz and she mentions she has never seen an Otter before and they are talking like they are long lost friends. We head on in and Mary and the kids plop down on the couches on the one side of the terminal. Were are here real early because I see Moira turning on the TV.

I go and get in line. Now there are three separate lines. One is for rookie cruisers, one for veteran cruisers (Castaway Club members- which we are) and one is for concierge cruisers. I walk on over and collect all my paperwork and stand in the concierge line. I wait and wait and wait. It seems like they only have a couple of people checking in the concierge cruisers. I can understand this as there are only 18 concierge rooms on the ship. Finally, a very nice cast member who was helping people over by the Castaway Club desk calls me over. I give her all my stuff and I am checked in very quickly. She tells me to go get my family and to stand over by a side door. She will meet us there. So I tell James to run over, he was with me checking in, and get his Mom and sister and to have them get everything and come and meet me. We are all together and she tells us we need to go get our picture and we are brought to the front of the line (it was very short anyways) and we all get our picture taken. (Note: I do not remember this the last time in '07, they may have done it then, but the link your photo with the Key to the World [KTTW] card. So, every time you come and go off the ship they see your photo when they swipe the card.) After our photos were go over to a roped off waiting area that is by the side doors with a great view of the ship if you wanted to go outside. We are told that this is our waiting area (we could come and go as we please) but once boarding started that we would need to be here.

Here are our KTTW cards and a special invitation that was given to us.

Before long, it was time to board. They announce the Family of the day and many people were asking if they get a room upgrade with that distinction. I think they only get to board first but I was hoping they did as well. We were then told to all get up and a side door opened up to the entrance to the gangway. We ere ushered through there and were quickly put to the line to get in. Our cards were swiped, although the line we picked seemed to go very slow due to some swiping problem. But, soon we were on and talking our Embarkation photo as you can see below.

We walked across the gang way and slowly started to see inside to our home for the next 7 days. A nice member of the crew asked us our names and soon was yelling out, “The Disney Magic welcomes the Nolan family.” (note: while you know you are going and made all the plans and even arrived at the terminal, until they call out your name and welcome you aboard the ship its never that real. Once they do that though it seems like everything has arrived.)

But, now we had a problem. What should we do. All of our reservations were made in advance and we don't need to change anything. We would usually go up to Topsiders and get some lunch and the kids would hit the pool but it was to cold for them to swim. What a minute I say as we were looking through Lumiere's windows, let's go to the Concierge Welcome Aboard Reception in Sessions. So we headed over there and as we walked my wife was amazed because I actually knew where I was going. I told her its like I never left.

As we walked into Sessions here is the sign for the Reception:

We talked with our concierge team, Ericka and Andreia. They were fabulous. Andreia came over and sat down with us and went over our entire itinerary, which was printed up for us. It included everything that I reserved. We talked and she asked us what we would like to do. I told her that we were definitely interested in the tastings. She asked which ones and I said all of them. So she told us the days and times and we picked out the best ones for us. We both signed up for the wine tasting and I signed up for both beer tastings and the martini tasting and finally the margarita and tequila tasting. What can I say, I am a lush, lol. The last time I only did the wine and the two beer tastings. I wanted to do them all this time. They also had complimentary drinks, appletini and another concoction that was very good, I cant's remember the name. The kids had some juice and we all had some of the finger foods they had out for us. There were small tuna sandwiches, fruit and vegetable platters and of course chocolate chip cookies. Can you guess what the kids had? We were also able to get our pager from Dan, one of the Youth activities members. That was very convenient as well.

After a little while there we headed up to deck 9 and we hit Topsiders. Moira and I went outside and got a table and waited for Mary and James. While it was sunny it was breezy and I only saw 3 kids in the Mickey pool.

Some pictures of us waiting on deck 9 and our first character sighting (other than the ones in the terminal)

OK you can only see two kids in the pool but believe me there was a third crazy kid floating around there.

Moira had the camera while I was getting her lunch, so if this is you with Donald, welcome to my trip report.

Moira decided she only wanted a hot dog so I stood in line at Pluto's and I got a cheeseburger also. Mary and James came out and we had lunch. Soon it was that time. The stateroom was open. We so wanted to see our suite and were very excited. But, you will have to wait until the next chapter in order to peak into the room with us.

Another great installment! :thumbsup2 We are also taking DCL transportation to the port. Do you remember what time you arrived if you left at 9:30? Thanks! Can't wait to see the navigators! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: And see your Cat 3 room :hyper:
