Yes, I am a theatre nerd and proud of it! This has been the day (year) from Hades, but this is my night. The Tonys are my "feel good" drug tonight! And did everyone but me realize that Sean Hayes could play a piano like that???!!

I love the Tony's, too!

I do wish that someone had told Katie Holmes that even if you're skinny you can still look horrible in a dress if it is too tight. I'd love to know who told her that the top of that dress looked good on her.

Just saw him in The Addams Family. OMG!! What a show! He's THE BEST!!! And I hope Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig get something for A Steady Rain. Another Great show.

I have decided I really need to see Million Dollar Quartet!

I LOVE the Tony's! I totally have to stay off Facebook because all my NY theatre friends will spoil it. It doesn't come on here for another 10 minutes. Can't wait to see Sean Hayes!!

It's gonna give me the itch though...haven't done a show for almost a year and I miss it so much!

I love the Tony's. Sitting here watching it and looking forward to hopefully seeing some of these on tour in the future.

They're not nominated. The show wasn't even nominated either. Which stinks, I thought they were great and so was the show. And they're both off filming movies, so they're not expected to appear tonight either.

I miss Hugh as the host...Sean Hayes is adorable (and that was some great piano playing), but not as good as Hugh or Neil Patrick Harris in the last few years.

Rooting for American Idiot...not expecting it to win. Green Day's performance has been my favorite part of the show so far. :thumbsup2

I figured this is the best place to ask this question. I'm not a big theater guy, but I have my favorites, and DW and I do go to shows here and there.

They were talking about the Tony's this morning on the radio, and the subject about "Hollywood" in Theater came up. Seeing as I don't follow theater that closely, is there any sort of rivalry between traditional theater actors, and the "new" onslaught of Hollywood actors (Denzel, Catherine Zeta-Jones, etc.) coming in and taking roles and winning awards? I know stuff like that can rub people the wrong way, but I didn't know if that was happening on Broadway. :confused3

Interesting rendition of "Send in the Clowns" by Catherine Zeta-Jones. And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

I can't say for sure...would have to ask my theater nut dd if there is any truth to that. But, most feel that Broadway is trying to stay alive, and by bringing in well known actors, perhaps more non-theater folks will come out to see the shows. As long as they can 'do' the part, I have no issue with it. But gratuitous casting, just for name recognition, really irks me.

Yeah, what was that about?? That was NOT my favorite song of the night by a long shot.

'American Idiot'. Well, at the risk of offending everyone under the age of 40, I hated it. I love theater and have very eclectic tastes. Loved 'Shrek', loved 'Next to Normal', loved 'title of show', loved 'Wicked'....etc. But 'American Idiot'?? Not so much. My dd saw it about 3 weeks ago, and loved it. She's 16, but also loves varied types of theater...'Next to Normal' and 'title of show' being tops in her book. She came home and all she could say was..'Mom, you would have hated it. You would have run screaming for the exit.'
Now, with the thought in mind that for the most part, it is parents paying for tickets and getting their younger kids to the theater, how long lived is AI going to be? I've seen 'Wicked' three times now..in Boston as well as NYC. And I could see it again. Is that going to be the case with AI? Doubt it. But, I could be wrong. I just think it's a faddish type musical. I've been wrong before and my dd tells me I am here as well.

I don't know...my parents loved American Idiot, and they're both hovering around age 60. My dad barely knew who Green Day was before we saw the show and he thought it was fantastic. They're planning on seeing it again.

I've seen AI twice, and both times the audience was far from being just kids. Green Day has been around 20 years, and their fans range far beyond teens, although they still have plenty of those too.

It's exceptionally loud, and it's 90 minutes of punk rock music, so if you don't like those things you probably won't like the show...but I thought it was great. I think it's the best show on Broadway right now. And it was the only performance last night that didn't leave me utterly bored about this entire season.

I thought I had just read that AI was closing. Must not have. :)

Catherine Zeta Jones was horrible. That song was waaayyyy too low for her register. :sad2:

Yes, Katie Holmes looked horrible. I wish she would stand up straight!!! UGH!

I thought Sean Hayes did a good job and I was very impressed with his piano playing. :)

Some of the technical problems they were having with mics was very distracting.

Matthew Morrison did a good job. Lea Michele was okay.

I've never watched the Tony's before and I liked how they did all the small live performances from each nominated play, talking about the plot/premise of it. :)

No flames from me. I'm 21 and I hated it. And yes, I like Rent, Next to Normal and Spring Awakening but AI just DIDN'T do it for me. Technically speaking, it was great and the ensemble was fantastic (didn't care for most of the leads save 1 or 2) but the plot was insanely hard to follow because most of the time I couldn't even understand what they were saying.

I was watching the show last night with my mom and one of my friends and they both said "This won't be around very long at all." It wasn't even close to sold out the day I saw it (just a week and a half after opening - on a Sunday afternoon, usually one of the busiest days for shows) and I think that while it attracts a wider audience than say, Fela, it still attracts an audience that largely depends on their parents to fund their theatergoing. It also is NOT a family show (although those seemed to be short-lived and in short supply these days, too, sadly enough) and I don't see it appealing in the least to families who come in and want to take their kids to their first Broadway show.

I saw a few of the other nominated shows/performances this year. I really, really liked Million Dollar Quartet. My friends and I won the ticket lottery for it about 5 weeks ago and we went in having heard mixed-negative reviews but we all really, really liked it. And Levi Kreis was fantastic!

I also saw Everyday Rapture (Twice! Once at the first preview and once about a week after they opened) it's honestly one of the best things I've seen in years of going to the theater (I saw my first Broadway show at age 7 and now see at least 12-15 a year, usually more). Sherie Rene Scott fully deserved her nomination and honestly, the show should have been up for Best Musical, in my eyes, in place of American Idiot. (I haven't seen Memphis or Fela but I've heard excellent things about both.)

Finian's Rainbow and Ragtime. Managed to catch them both, despite them only running from October/November to January. Both were shows that closed FAR too soon, but again, because they didn't have mass-market appeal. I went into both shows knowing absolutely NOTHING about them (save for 1 or 2 songs each) and came out loving them. Honestly, I only saw Finian's because a friend of mine was in the cast and only saw Ragtime because another friend was a production assistant. They were, along with Everyday Rapture, the highlights of a very dull season.

I didn't see Memphis, Fela, Promises, Promises, A Little Night Music or La Cage Aux Folles. After last night the only one I wouldn't care to see is Fela. The production number was all over the place and I was confused just watching it. A Little Night Music I hope to see with Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch in the fall when I go back to school, and the same with Memphis, La Cage and Promises (which I've been wanting to see but the two times I tried to get student rush they were all sold out). I also want to see Next Fall and Fences, as well.

I do wish that someone had told Katie Holmes that even if you're skinny you can still look horrible in a dress if it is too tight. I'd love to know who told her that the top of that dress looked good on her.

Oh, that dress was AWFUL. She was oozing out of the top. It looked so uncomfortable, and so bad.

And whoever decided to pair Katie Holmes with Daniel Radcliffe should be shot. Poor Daniel looked like a midget next to her.

I miss Hugh as the host...Sean Hayes is adorable (and that was some great piano playing), but not as good as Hugh or Neil Patrick Harris in the last few years.

Sean was OK, but he just doesn't have the charisma of Hugh or Neil Patrick.

Interesting rendition of "Send in the Clowns" by Catherine Zeta-Jones. And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Catherine Zeta Jones was horrible. That song was waaayyyy too low for her register. :sad2:

I totally agree. DD and I were really annoyed at the way she jerked her head back and forth - DD said it looked like she was trying to shoo away a bug flying around her.
And I did not like her phrasing of "Send in the Clowns" at all.

I'm amazed she won, and I wonder if they are pandering to the big name Hollywood stars, since Denzel also won. :confused3

Some of the technical problems they were having with mics was very distracting.

It was worse last year. A stage hand actually had to run onstage in the middle of a musical number to give a singer a hand-held mic, because his headset had gone out and no one could hear a thing he was singing.

You would think for people used to doing live shows, these things would not be a problem!

Matthew Morrison did a good job. Lea Michele was okay.

They did, but I don't really know why they performed last night, other than to capitalize on the popularity of "Glee".

No flames from me. I'm 21 and I hated it. And yes, I like Rent, Next to Normal and Spring Awakening but AI just DIDN'T do it for me. I'm with you. I haven't seen American Idiot yet, but I do have different expectations from a musical than a concert. I like to have a plot that is understandable, and while I don't hate Green Day, I'm not a huge fan either. And like you, I liked Rent and other musicals with more of a rock flavor, such as Jesus Christ Superstar.

After last night the only one I wouldn't care to see is Fela. The production number was all over the place and I was confused just watching it.

Agree on that one too. In my opinion, it was loud, confusing and chaotic. And some of the screechy notes the mother character sang hurt my ears.

I don't know...we're two "40 somethings" with a DD12...just bought tickets for the three of us to see Green Day this summer and are dying to see "AI"!!!:)
