I don't know about the thread, but just before school started last fall I helped my high school senior open a checking account /debit card attached to that account. My mom did the same thing for me when I started my senior year, and it was a great idea. I learned how to write checks /use the ATM card /balance my checkbook while I was still living at home, and I didn't go away to college and get into trouble with money.
I don't think she's using the checking portion much -- I think she's only wirtten two checks total -- but she is using the debit card effectively. She especially likes it at the gas pump.
She used to get her allowance every Friday, but she asked if she could start getting it once a month. She thought it'd be more like college that way. I really didn't care, so I said yes. I get paid on the last day of the month; I give her a check (a small check) that day every month. So she's getting practice in depositing checks too.
We chose to get her account through the State Employees' Credit Union. Her account "costs" $1/month, which I consider a fair fee. She's almost certain to attend a state school next fall, and all our state schools have a State Employees' Credit Union on campus. If she should change her mind, we'll change her account to a more convenient bank, but it looks like she has a set-up that'll see her through her college years.
