This will likely be more of a collection of random thoughts as opposed to a true trip report, and I'm far too lazy to include pictures, but I offer you the following humble report, such as it is.

The cast of characters...

Main cast:

Myself, 36
My lovely wife, also 36
My precocious daughter, turning 5 during the trip
My rambunctious son, 3 years and some change

Second unit:

Mother-in-law (grandma age)
Father-in-law (grandpa age)
My Mom (grandma age)
My brother, 40

The trip was Friday, December 2nd to Friday, December 9th, 2011*and we were all staying at Bay Lake Tower with cash reservations. *My crew and my in-laws in a 2 bedroom villa and my Mom and brother with their own studios.*

Although my wife and I are road warriors with hundreds of trips under our belts, this was our first time flying with the kids - and our first visit to Disney World in 12 years - so I was a bit apprehensive. *We live in Chicago and are fortunate enough to have access to a full size airliner exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, so we made a few "dry run" visits with the kids to get them used to the idea and what to expect/how to behave on an airplane. Very helpful!

Day One, Friday - Arrival

We got going bright and early Friday morning and*made it to Midway airport with plenty of time to spare. *The flight was on time and the kids loved every minute of the flight - it honestly couldn't have been smoother.*

We ended up with all three rooms on the 12th floor - our two bedroom was #8229 and the studios were #8238 and #8240. Our two bedroom was pretty much dead center on the inside of the "C" layout of BLT, looking due east across Bay Lake. And let me tell you, the view was fantastic. Frankly, I'd take that view every time over the theme park view. *I thought the theme park views were underwhelming, as they are mostly parking lot and with the castle being so far away. Sunrises over Bay Lake where gorgeous. The two studio rooms were more south-easterly views...mostly Bay Lake, the Contemporary marina, and the Contemporary itself. *Pretty nice views, I thought, especially as you could see Spaceship Earth on the horizon!

A few overall impressions of BLT:*

- I love the Contemporary, so the theme, style, furnishings, etc were all right up my alley. *Disney absolutely nailed the floor plan and amenities in the one and two bedrooms. Tons of space, three full bathrooms, the full laundry and storage room, the kitchen, and even the nice entry hallway which doesn't open directly onto the living room/kitchen space were just fantastic. *We felt totally spoiled.

- The rooms looked totally worn. *Worn carpets, plenty of wall dings, some stains on the furniture, etc. *It wasn't that big of a deal, and I realize these rooms get a ton of traffic, but I was pretty surprised that the rooms looked like they needed renovations just 2 years after they were built.

- Mousekeeping kind of sucked. I left a few very healthy tips up front to prime the pump and received mediocre service in return. *Several times our garbage wasn't emptied, towels replaced, etc. *We were on a cash reservation, so we were receiving daily service. *I began to wonder if the housekeepers there are so used to the every 4 day service of DVC members and were just mailing it in for us. *Disappointing.

- The complimentary wifi performance was solid. I expected it to be unusably slow, but it was actually pretty good.*

- I forgot how funny the tap water smells down in Florida. *Funky.

- The lighting in the master bedroom is atrocious. The bulk of the light provided is from the two bedside sconces and it's just super bright and a very harsh shade. I've almost never thought twice about hotel lighting in the past but this was super annoying.

- The layout and overall floor and site plan of BLT makes sense in a vacuum, or simply to service the views of the MK and lake, but other than that is a bit goofy. *The long curving hallways with just two elevator banks on either end always seemed inconvenient. *Going in and out of the main entrance always felt like you were going out of your way, and having an equal number of elevators in the north and south banks make sense in theory, but is silly when you consider that 90% of all elevator traffic is running through the south bank (due to the walkways to the Contemporary) while the north bank sits relatively unused.*

- I'm not sure if this was mostly due to the time of the year, but once it hits about noon, the BLT pool is entirely in the shade. Even when it was over 80, it was almost too cold to swim because it was in the shade. The Contemporary pool is much better sited in this respect, and gets almost constant sunshine prior to sunset. *But the Contemporary pool has no zero entry! *Didn't they just renovate this pool in 2008?! *A huge miss in not adding zero entry there...I really hope they do so sometime soon. *The big slide and the kiddie slide at the BLT pool were awesome.*

With our 5 and 3 year old we decided to rent a stroller. *We got the City Mini double from Orlando Stroller Rentals. Totally easy process - bell services brought it up to our room and we dropped it off at Bell Services after we checked out. *The stroller was clean, compact, mobile, and easy to use. *The huge name plate they strap to the bottom was great for identifying your stroller in the vast stroller parking areas. *Our only quibble was they put two note cards with stroller operation instructions in the included packet and I only looked at one - the wrong one - and couldn't puzzle out how to collapse it for a full day. Boy, I felt pretty stupid when I figured that out, especially as the collapse straps have "PULL HERE" or something like that in huge letters written on it.*

The only discount we could finagle for a cash reservation at BLT was Free Dining. *I'm not personally a fan of the dining plan but was going to take whatever deal I could get and that's all that was available. At the end of the day I found keeping track of credits to be a hassle I would rather not have had to deal with and the sheer amount of paper that gets pushed your way when doing a table service meal is absolutely comical - its like the waiter delivered you a small novel when they brought your check - but the waiters, everyone one, were awesome about dealing with everything. Two of our group were not on the dining plan so we often had split checks, and our attitude was we ordered whatever we wanted and paid out of pocket for whatever wasn't covered by the dining plan, and each waiter handled it all perfectly without even batting an eye. A huge round of applause to all of the waiters we had!

My crew and my Mom and brother arrived at MCO within an hour of one another (around noon), walked over to the car rental level and had our minivan rental and booster car seats for the ankle biters in no time. *I've rented a lot of cars in my lifetime and was pretty impressed with the speed and efficiency of the operation. *Most of the folks on the boards here seemed to think it was a crazy idea using the rental companies car seats, but they seemed clean and in perfect operating condition to me. *I'd use them again without a second thought but they were boosters and therefore only suitable for older kiddos like mine.*

My wife and I had a good time arguing over whether to follow the signs to the airport or trust the phone GPS...in the end I think we followed half of the instructions each way and took as long and circuitous of a route as humanly possible. *Unload and check in took the usual strangely long time but we were in our room with our luggage, stroller rental, and grocery delivery with minimal hassle!

We grabbed a bite to eat at the Contempo Cafe while we waited for my in-laws to arrive. *I really liked the touch screen ordering system - it seemed like it sped up the ordering process considerably - and my club sammy was solid - the multigrain bread they are using for sammies on property is really, really tasty. *At first I thought the chips were delicious and a little "spicy", until I realized they were really just incredibly over salted and I could only choke down a couple.

Once the in-laws arrived and got settled we made a brief foray into the MK right around dusk. *I had totally forgotten how Main Street is engineered with sights, sounds, and smells and it was just overwhelming. It was the first time for my children, and having so much family there was just an incredible experience.

We decided to ride the Jungle Cruise and just walk around a little. *I think the JC is waaaaay better at night because all of the old effects and run down appearance is way less noticeable but my 3 year old totally freaked and buried his head in my chest for the entire ride. *Whoops! *Unfortunately, he was somewhat scarred for rides the rest of the way....and my application for "Worst Dad in America" hadn't even been submitted yet. *More on that on Day Four (Monday)!

To be continued with...

...two birthdays, a wedding anniversary, and one raging case of pneumonia!

Nice start! We're DVC owners and BLT is one of our home resorts--BW is the other. We're warming up to BLT and find it incredible for certain circumstances--when we have extra people with us and need the extra bathrooom, or with kids, when we spend more time at the MK. You did a good summary on the pluses and minuses!

YAY! A good start to a trip report! Can't wait to read more! We own at BLT and I was concerned with the upkeep on the rooms a year ago. Sad to hear it is no better!

Day Two, Saturday – Animal Kingdom & Our First Birthday!
*
Our second day actually started rather dramatically at about 1am when my wife and I were woken up by a big thump and my son shrieking his head off in the living room.* Rushing out of the master to see what the fuss was about we discovered my daughter sitting up and rubbing her eyes from her spot on the pull out couch and my son nowhere to be seen….because he had somehow scootched his way down far enough past the giant armrests on the pull out chair to fall right off the side and whack his face against the picture window frame!
*
Real tragedy was averted as he was largely just scraped on the side of his nose with no real harm done…but that left us to figure out how to get him set up in a bed of some fashion so he could get some sleep.* A call down to the front desk had a maintenance man at our door within minutes, bed rails in tow.* Unfortunately, the bed rails only fit on the beds and don’t work on the pull out couch or chairs.* I’m still not quite sure how they managed it, but my wife and the maintenance guy quickly fashioned a makeshift fortress around the pullout chair with all of the extra cushions from the chair and couch and the ottoman/coffee table – it was brilliantly designed, impossible for a 3 year old to roll out of, and easy to recreate each night.* Crisis averted!
*
When (a slightly sleep deprived) morning finally dawned we rallied the troops for a quick in-room breakfast (I highly recommend juice, yogurt, and donuts, by the way) and headed down to grab a bus to the Animal Kingdom (I had always heard the parking situation at AK is a mess in the morning, so we just decided to leave the minivan and take the bus).* Just as we pushed out of the BLT lobby we spy an Animal Kingdom bus entering the parking lot….and my wife realized she forgot her sunglasses and went sprinting back to the room.* We were all a little crestfallen that we might be in for a long wait for the next bus but, magically, another AK bus showed up right behind the first one we missed and my wife came galloping through the parking lot to board with us.
*
It was my father-in-law’s actual birthday that day so we snagged him a “Birthday Button”, sidled into the park, and wandered our way to Kilimanjaro Safaris.* It was about 30-45 minutes after park open and there was no wait whatsoever.* My wife and I had been on KS years ago and I had forgotten how well done it is…we all largely had a blast, but both kids were hanging on me for dear life at the bumpy, wild “escape” at the end.* And, of course, my son was in tears when we finally got out of the trucks.* Second ride down and he wasn’t exactly having the experience with this whole “ride” thing.
*
We rolled through the African exploration trail and I somehow ended up lugging the backpack, had my daughter on my shoulders, AND was pushing my son in the stroller.* Six adults and I ended up with all of the grunt work?* Sheesh!
*
For some reason even though KS was a walk-on the exploration trail was PACKED.* I really enjoy the entire attraction, but it really wasn’t an ideal experience at that point in the day.* Still, the gorilla habitats are really incredible and we all had a great time.*
*
It was only a little after 11am but the group was getting hungry (shoulda eaten more donuts, I guess) and, despite my protestations that we keep hoofing it for a better meal option, we ended up eating at Pizzafari.* I mean, even bad pizza is good in my opinion, but the stuff that Disney serves up is really lackluster for the most part.* I won’t dwell on it, but lunch sucked and I will go out of my way to not eat a Pizzafari again in the future if I can help it.* It’s not ABC Commissary (DHS) bad, but certainly nothing to go running back for.* It was the first time the kids noticed that the little grape packages in their meals had cartoons of the grapes shouting “Let us out!” which they thought was unbelievably hilarious – and we got some food in us – so it wasn’t a total loss.* J
*
We then hit the next showing of Festival of the Lion King which was a massive hit.* My kids looooooove “The Lion King” and all of the adults were impressed with the performers.* Great stuff.* I remember when it used to be in an open air arena, and preferred that set up, but it was a quality show and we got tons of pictures of my beaming son with the Simba animatronic….which was interesting because this is the first we noted what was to be a common, and extremely curious, theme with his posing for pictures throughout the trip.* Remember that scrape he got on his face from falling out of his bed?* Somehow this little 3 year old boy became totally self-conscious about it and would cover it up with his hand for EVERY PICTURE.* Nothing we could do or say, even trying to pull his hand away, would get him to stop covering it up for pictures.* So pretty much every posed picture we have of him the entire trip is mostly his hand in his face.* What a goofball.
*
The three adult women in the part (my wife, mom, and mother-in-law) had no real agenda but the three men (myself, brother, and father-in-law) were hellbent on making sure we rode Everest and Dinosaur.* We had an adults-only birthday dinner at 6pm at the California Grill, so we knew we only had a couple of hours to get things taken care of before we had to get back to our resort, freshen up, change, and settle the kids in with the babysitter.* So the master plan was to head to Dinoland, set the kids and women loose on Triceratops Spin and the Boneyard, and the menfolk would somehow plow through Everest and Dinosaur as quickly as possible.* I figured the worst case scenario was about an hour wait between both attractions with another hour of buffer time for travel, ride time, and additional waits.* We headed to Dinosaur and the posted wait time said 15 minutes….uh, no - we waited in line for 5 and it was clearly going to be a 30+ minute wait.* So we snuck out of line, grabbed FastPasses, and headed over to Everest.* Despite my wait time apps telling me there was a projected 20 minute wait, it was clearly over 45 minutes when we got there.* Uggggggggghhhhhhh.* We glanced over to the single rider line and there were literally 8 people in it.* Bingo!* We quickly queued up and all ended up on the same train together within a few minutes.* This was my first time riding Everest and I loved it….not the wildest coaster but a lot of fun (despite the Disco Yeti).* I was sort of surprised that one of the high G backward turns (through a tunnel section) was actually physically painful…but happily so.* When we rolled back into the station I looked back at my father-in-law (who was a few cars behind me) and he looked like he had just endured a 8 mile freefall from the stratosphere.* Hilarious!* He bounced back quickly, though, and we were within 5 minutes of our return time (which was on an exceptionally short return, I thought) by the time we made it back to Dinosaur.
*
Now, Dinosaur and I have an interesting history.* I rode it once back when it was Countdown to Extinction and I remember it scaring the crap out of me.* I love thrill rides and big bad coasters, but there was just something about the kidney-shaking sound level and NON-STOP LOUD JUNK POPPING OUT INTO YOUR FACE THE ENTIRE RIDE that really got to me.* I remember by the end of my first ride all of those years ago I just put my head down and closed my eyes, praying it would finally end.* So I had been talking it up to my brother and father-in-law the whole time.* Needless to say, it was waaaaaay toned down from back in the day.* Maybe all the effects were broken.* We were all sort of disappointed in the ride.* I wonder if they should work in some video screens and 3D glasses in addition to the physical sets to spruce it up, ala the new Transformers ride at Universal Studios.
*
Anyway, we polished off both of those headliners in 45 minutes flat from leaving the women and the children to showing back up in triumph at the Boneyard.* Or so I thought.* Instead of being greeted with “Wow, it seems like you guys just left!” we found three distraught women and no kids.* Uh-oh.* Having no prior knowledge of the Boneyard set up, they all entered and my kids immediately disappeared.* Occasionally an adult would catch a fleeting glimpse of one and then they’d be gone.* I really thought my mother-in-law was going to start crying.* We stationed two adults at the entrance/exit and swept the place with the remaining adults and pretty quickly rounded up the little rascals….who couldn’t have been having a better time…but whereas I thought I was winning major points with our efficiency, we ended up with emotionally scarred adults!* And there’s only one thing that can assuage frazzled nerves….Mickey Bars!
*
We got some great photos of the kids mowing down their very first Mickey Bars, which were thankfully a two-handed endeavor for my son so we actually got some pictures of his face.* Unfortunately half the dang thing ended up on his shirt and the stroller.* Oh well!

We meandered our way out of the park, picking up some swag on the way out, and walked right onto a bus back to BLT.
*
After some quick freshening up and changing our babysitter arrived a few minutes early.* She was awesome!* Super personable, professional, experienced, and brought a giant bag of toys in tow!* We had originally scheduled her for 4 hours but she told us we had her for the night and to just come back whenever we felt like it.* We told her we would call if we were going to stay out later.* After picking up some dinner for the kids at Contempo Café, the adults were off for my father-in-law’s birthday dinner at the California Grill!
*
We ended up with an excellent table a row off of the windows with a solid MK view as the sun was setting.* I’m a bit of a foodie and have fairly high standards for what I consider a fine dining experience and was somewhat concerned with all of the chatter about dining standards having been lowered through WDW (with the exception of Victoria & Albert’s).* While I wouldn’t put the food or experience in the top tier of fine dining, it was excellent – a perfectly acceptable and enjoyable upscale dining experience.* All of the appetizers and entrees were very good and the service was great.* I really enjoyed the sushi and a few of the flatbreads were excellent.* I’m sure the copious number of cocktails helped, too!* And my father-in-law was suitably doted on as the birthday boy.
*
After a roughly 3 hour dinner we realized that the MK was open late that evening (midnight or 1am) so our younger adult crowd (myself, my wife, and my brother) headed back to the MK for some evening shenanigans.* We managed to bust through Splash Mountain a few times, Haunted Mansion, and finally Pirates of the Caribbean.* My wife works regular 80+ hour weeks and she was totally spent at this point…and actually fell asleep towards the end of Pirates.* She was NOT happy when I woke her up.* J* And I empathized with her as I had been battling a pretty ragged cough for a good week or two before our trip and was feeling awfully run down after such an event filled day.* We decided to call it a night and headed home for some much needed sleep since the next day – SUNDAY – was the main event of the trip….my daughter’s 5th birthday celebration and a whirlwind princess day in the MK!
