Introduction
Day One
Day Two
Day Three

Day Four 23rd August 2007

Felling mighty fine after our relaxing rest day, I was semi conscious from 6ish, but didn’t grace the world with my presence until around 7.15. After yesterday’s “battle” at MGM with enormous crowds, we had all agreed that today we would do the only decent thing and get to a park early.

Rebecca is up and about before me, and she finds it very amusing to photograph Dad asleep.

How I laughed when I saw this photo later, and then changed my will accordingly.

So in attempt to get on a ride pre dusk, we sacrifice breakfast…saved me making it again anyway….and we’re out of the door by 8.20 ish. Great stuff. I know that the Animal Kingdom opens at 9am, so we should be there prior to that, and can have a decent stab at doing some rides before they are inundated with the cast from Ghandi.

My positive thinking is cut short by Louise who informs me that we need to call at the supermarket first as she has a “condition” that needs some medical attention.

Oh, you mean that supermarket in completely the opposite direction to the theme parks? No problem, oh light of my life. Is it too much to ask that for fourteen days out of three hundred and sixty five we can avoid any medical mishaps?? I can only conclude that it is.

I shall not divulge the exact nature of the complaint, yet, as we hear more from it later. Plus you may be eating, and it would not be fair.

So we pull up at Goodings, my how I’ve missed the place, and Louise rolls from the moving car, Professionals style, as I handbrake turn it to a stop. We follow her in as we figure we may as well get some breakfast now that we are totally wasting our early rise.

Having acquired what she needs to treat what ails her, we meet by the sandwich bit, and choose our breakfasts.

We all choose sandwhiches, apart from Emily who chooses a dozen apple turnovers…that’s my girl!! We quickly exit, jump in the car and make our escape. We eat as we go, and we’ve finished and arrived at around the same time.

As we cruise through the car park toll booths, not paying due to our superior onsite status, I get a weird look as I appear to have some sort of strange disease, but it is really just crumbs around my mouth and all down my shirt.

We pull into Unicorn 25, near the top of the row no less, at 9.00am.

We just miss a tram, so we take our position at the poles (bloody immigrants, but at least they let you know where to queue for the tram), and wait for the next tram. It turns out there is but one tram on duty, and many people start to walk to the main gates.

I spend my time much more productively by tutting and looking at my watch.

Finally the tram returns, the CM on the back greets us with the usual white noise over the speakers, and we finally make the main gate.

The bag check is a little over zealous this morning, inspecting not just Ryan, but my “fanny pack” too. I draw the line at any further “sack” inspections, and tell the guard he’ll have to trust me that no-one has been near that one for years, so it poses no risk to security.

In years gone by the mission at this stage was

a) get a stroller

b) get a safari fast pass

Well, with the advent of Expedition Everest, and my girls growing up seemingly overnight, we do neither. We start the yomp to EE at a decent pace. Look at all the foolish souls pausing to take photos and look at animals…what do you think this is..a holiday????

I do take some photos but only whilst walking, so there is no family pose in front of the tree I’m afraid.

floridaaug07105.jpg

However, my photographic skills are not diminished by snapping at full pace….

floridaaug07106.jpg

There lies our objective troops….

floridaaug07107.jpg

We arrive hot and sweaty at EE at around 9.15, and see a 20 minute wait posted. I quickly obtain fastpasses for later, and we join the queue.

They have made a decent job of making the queue interesting, no doubt anticipating the enormous waits.

The excitement builds as we only managed one go on this ride last year.

floridaaug07108.jpg

floridaaug07109.jpg

I even pretend that the artefacts are interesting and take a photo of one

floridaaug07110.jpg

We are just about to get onto the platform when everything stops. We wait a while….trying to interest ourselves in the “exhibits” in the queue, but we want to ride, and ride NOW.

All too predictably we hear an announcement that the ride is “experiencing problems” and is not working at this time.

We are less than pleased….see

Continued....

We hang about for a couple of minutes and then admit defeat and leave. Mercifully, the CMs are handing out consolation fastpasses to be used later. I resist the urge to spit on it, and take one anyway.

Feeling cheesed off we leave and think of what to do next.

We choose Dinoland as it is not too far a walk. Primeval Whirl says 20 minutes, and we don’t believe it so we go in. We were right, it was more like 30 minutes. The queue moved as quickly as Russell Grant through a sweet shop, and we get very hot and a bit naffed off.

Just as we get to somewhere near the front of the queue, an engineer appears and starts tinkering with the ride. Louise and I exchange one of those looks that says if this breaks down we’re going straight to the airport.

Thankfully, he simply removes one of the cars from the track and it continues. Finally, around 10.30 we get to go on a ride. Things had better improve quick smart.

We enjoyed the ride, despite a couple of ribs being shattered.

We need a drink at this point….a stiff one to be honest…but even the drink caravan thing in Dinoland is not open…I wonder if the owners of Blackpool Pleasure Beach have taken over Disney since we arrived, and we take our huff with us in search of something that is open and works.

We arrive back at EE to find it working, so in the absence of anywhere to buy a drink we join the fastpass queue with our fastpass that we got before joining the queue last time.

No drama this time and we are straight on.

What a fantastic ride this is. All four of us love it so much that we bought the company…well almost…we just went on again instead using our consolation prize fastpass. Great stuff, and we’re almost back in a good mood now.

We grab another fastpass as we leave for the early afternoon.

As we can’t buy any water to drink we figure the Rapids would be a good bet instead, and if we ride with our mouths open you never know.

Again, a 20 minute wait is posted, but in truth we just make the long walk up the path and we are straight on. I am always aware that the level of wetness is directly linked to your initial choice of seat. Turns out I chose correctly as Emily and Rebecca get the full force of the moistness on this ride, which was great!!

The ride is both wetter and better than I remembered.

Rebecca got a full wave down her back…doesn’t really show here, but she was wet through.

floridaaug07112.jpg

We pause to enjoy our long sought after drink.

floridaaug07113.jpg

We wander off to nowhere in particular, and find that Flights of Wonder is just starting, so at Rebecca’s request we enter.

floridaaug07120.jpg

floridaaug07123.jpg

It is an enjoyable show, as long as you can put up with the Sesame Street style conservation messaging.

If you have any sort of fear of birds, then be careful here as they can fly very close to your heads in the audience.

I have attracted birds from a very young age of course, so I felt right at home!!

We leave and by some strange turn of events we find ourselves in a shop.

Now for some history. On one of our previous trips…I forget which exactly…I think it was 2004…Rebecca got a hat that she loved. She loved it so much that she left it in Mexico at Epcot, and cried for the next eighteen months.

As we bought it from AK we said we’d replace it this year. They didn’t have the exact same hat but a couple that were similar, so she tried them on. As there were no mirrors anywhere I took a couple of pictures so she could choose which one she wanted.

floridaaug07128.jpg

floridaaug07129.jpg

She chose the first one, but Emily decided against the hat she tried on.

floridaaug07130.jpg

Many dollars lighter we leave and head for It’s Tough to Be a Bug.

Continued....

We wander through the maze like entrance through the base of the Tree…

floridaaug07131.jpg

and then enter the lovely cool waiting area, and pick up our bug eyes.

floridaaug07133.jpg

A great show follows, and having seen it a lot, you sometimes forget how people react to the show the first time. The genuine screams around us remind us though, as the “cast” leave towards the end. Very funny.

It is now around 1pm, incredibly hot, and the park is looking packed. We decide to see how the safari queue looks, and we’re not too surprised to see it at 50 minutes. That “safari” long queue :lmao: so we don’t bother.

We still have an hour to kill before our last EE fastpass, but we’d had enough and didn’t fancy battling the crowds for another hour so we decided to leave and go back to the pool.

Everyone (well it is really Louise, but I can’t say that for fear of physical harm) is a bit grumpy at this point. Safe in the knowledge that I am completely in the right, I let her think she wins the argument we have around now, and we walk out of the park, holding hands and skipping.

Within half an hour we’re out of the park, and back at Saratoga getting changed to do the pool. The kids go in the water immediately only surfacing at around 3pm for food.

floridaaug07137.jpg

We grab a sandwich from the food court again, before we all go back into the water…even Louise. It turns out this is a mistake in the long run, as her “condition” is not improved by any sort of moistness…so she really is in trouble being with me in just my swimming gear!! :rolleyes1

The kids badger me and Louise into going down the slide so we do that for a bit. Generally it is a nice relaxing afternoon of swimming, reading (but not at the same time) and sunbathing.

The view from my sunbed.

floridaaug07139.jpg

The afternoon is only interrupted by a lifeguard having to dive in to save a young boy who was struggling in the water. The rescue attempt is a success, and we all go back to doing nothing for a bit longer.

At around 6pm we decide to call it a day and head back to the room. It is a little bit of a walk, but the scenery is lovely.

floridaaug07140.jpg

floridaaug07142.jpg

floridaaug07143.jpg

Showers were had by all, along with much more Disney channel. We have decided that Bahama Breeze will be our choice for food tonight, and we leave at around 8pm, slightly concerned that the expected wait and Rebecca’s anticipated crash and burn may restrict our evening.

Both fears are realised.

We are told it will be a 45 minute wait (with no option of fastpass), but we can have drinks and appetisers on the patio. Why we can’t just eat there is a mystery but there you go.

There is a “turn” on for our delectation and delight…so that is what happened to Bobby Brown then…

floridaaug07145.jpg

We browse the menus, choose some cocktails and order some appetisers.

Continued....

Rebecca has that “you know I’m going to sleep through this meal” look on her face.

floridaaug07146.jpg

Emily’s tiredness manifests itself in high volume annoyingness these days, and she launches into that nice and early.

floridaaug07148.jpg

I try my best to keep Rebecca awake long enough so that I can eat my fill…

floridaaug07149.jpg

I even resort to some overt threats…as I pull out my will, showing her what she has already lost for taking that photo this morning, and if she wants to go ahead and only inherit my sock collection, she can go to sleep!!

She knows I’m bluffing I fear, as she knows every penny I will ever earn will end up in Disney’s pocket!!

floridaaug07151.jpg

Anyway, the appetisers arrive. It looked like we had been given the order for the next table which contained sixteen people, but apparently not.

floridaaug07153.jpg

We had said we’d share a portion of onion rings and a flatbread. If only we’d known.

So we tuck into that lot, and of course as the food hits Rebecca’s stomach, her eyes begin to close nicely. We try everything from jokes, to shin kicking, but she is struggling now.

Finally we are called to our table inside. Frankly we were all pretty stuffed by now, and even I do something unheard of and order a salad for my entrée. Louise instantly thinks I am either ill or insane.

Turns out she need not have worried…here is my “light” salad.

floridaaug07157.jpg

Don’t worry I do get the hang of taking photos of food that are not blurred very soon. It was a new camera you see!!

Emily orders a flatbread for her meal.

floridaaug07158.jpg

Louise had eaten half of her pasta by this time so my chance of a photo had passed.

Rebecca finally falls asleep in her chicken strips, and we now just eat what we can and get the bill.

Only Louise managed to finished her meal….I will make no comment.

We drove back to Saratoga and call in at Bell Services as we had been left a message that someone had left us a package. I assume it is a compensation package from Disney for our bad start at AK this morning…something like lifetime DVC membership, and a night in the castle would do it.

Instead we are equally shocked to find two boogie boards and some drinks, with a note from Aidhon and Naimh, (Jakki’s lovely kids). There had been boogie board “goings on” last year when we met a Vero, and they obviously recognised my natural outstanding talents with a boogie board and felt I would make better use of them.

Something like that anyway.

So we shove them in the boot (the boogie boards, not Jakki’s kids) and drive back to the room. Rebecca undresses whilst asleep, and I meet up with Stephen Fry again for a bit, but my eyes close not long after.

See you tomorrow.
