The Sunday Times claims anyone could have played Iron Man

There is so much digital enhancement, what we used to call CGI, it's hard to know where the acting ends and the blue screen starts. Especially if you watch "the making of" and learn all the secrets. Actors are enhanced and their actions are, especially in blockbuster hero movies, completely faked. The movie is the STAR, that is to say the people behind the camera, animation, and story, the crew and other creators Not so much the actors any longer. I still have my favs and would go to see particular actors in any movie.

I totally disagree. RDJ brought to Iron Man very specific charm which was key to its success. Iron Man was never as popular of a character as liek the X-Men and Spider-Man - in fact in comics most of the Avengers weren't, which is why those movie rights had never been sold. It would have been very easy for it to fail, or at least not be so strong to base a decades long movie franchise on. He brought that, along with John Favreau and any other actor may not have worked as well.

I hate most things Hollywood but I have to disagree here. RDJ has real amazing talent and charm.
To turn the argument on its head, I thought Valerian was a truly awful movie with great costumes and cinematography as well as a stellar performance by Rihanna and the people who turned her into that weird creature… Her costars were blech and they tanked the movie.

I enjoyed Valerian for just how crazy it is, but I agree that Dane DeHaan was weak as the lead. I thought Cara Delevigne was pretty good as the character is supposed to be a bit aloof like that, but Dane didn't play well off of her and also came off as aloof and disconnected, which didn't work. Only one of the pair can do that!

Well, they did said "with a wit". Many actors could've been worse Iron-man, and of course many better. What is important is that when someone says Iron Man, RDJ appears to most people before their eyes. So, he is kind of iconic in this role, but then, I do think RDJ mostly plays himself in every role, but luckily he has a charm that is unique to him only.

I remember when RDJ was first cast and all of my comic shop buddies were so against it, but I knew it would be right. He is playing himself, but he practically IS Tony Stark. A rich kid, somewhat spoiled, substance abuse issues - he checked the boxes and it really worked!

I agree Brian, you said it better than I.

You have to remember what a mess RDJ was 15 years ago. Imagine someone saying that the role of Tony Stark would be played by Charlie Sheen. That's pretty much the same thing. Although, RDJ took full advantage of his 2nd chance.

I dont dislike RDJ. I just think that many actors could have played Ironman, and whomever did portray him would be the man we are talking about. I am not a comic book person. So I'm coming at this from a movie only perspective. I always have in the back of my mind, " it's a comic book adaptation".

I think it's possible someone else could have done just as good of a job, but I don't think just "anyone" could have done it as the article postulates. It definitely mattered.

I missed those words. No I dont think anyone could have done it. And also I do think that Marvel has done a great job of casting. I cant imagine the heroes as anyone else NOW. BC as Dr Strange, CE as Capt A, TH as Loki, BL as Capt Marvel - so many are now fixed in my mind.

Just for fun, who else do you think could have played various MCU characters?

I think Katie Sackoff could have played Captain Marvel very well.

With some of the characters, there are other references. I liked Edward Norton's Bruce Banner, but like Mark Ruffalo's take better. I did not like Terrance Howard's Rhodes and LOVE Don Cheadle - although I should also say that I would watch Don Cheadle in anything.

I wanted Katheryn Winnick when they were still in the casting phase. I think Brie Larson did well, though. Oh, and I wanted Jensen Ackles for Hawkeye. I still think he would have been better, but I'm not a big Jeremy Renner fan.
