The style of the decade

So I'm sitting here watching some Saved By the Bell and giggling at the late 80's, early 90's styles, and I got to thinking. In the past century, every decade was very distinct. I can look at a picture and guess relatively accurately which decade it was taken in just by looking at the clothing and hairstyles. However, I'm not seeing a huge difference between the 2nd half of the 90's when I was in high school and today. So tell me- what do you think were the distinctive styles of the 2000s?

Early 2000's was the bare mid-rif. Late 2000's would be the more bohemian/uggs look? And the longer hair for guys. Those are the ones that stand out to me.

It won't be obvious until we're a little farther removed. I didn't think the 90s had a style at all but looking back now I can clearly tell hairstyles/clothing etc. that come from the 90s.

One "style" I'm sick of seeing is unkempt hair, pajamas, slippers and/or anything that screams "Too lazy to care!"

I'd love it if some styles from the 80's/early 90's came back!

I too am entirely over the pajama bottoms everywhere style. I am all for bringing back the 20's! I want to rock a flapper dress, and at 35 I only have 1 or maybe 2 more years to do it. I should attempt to bring back this style single-handedly!

I just turned 60 in the fall and I have to tell you that I have noticed over the years that the "same" styles - with maybe just a slight variation - tend to turn up again sooner or later.. Since my body size has not really changed much since I was a teenager, I kind of wish I kept every article of clothing I ever had.. LOL..

Fashion trends to come back around about every twenty years or so. Of course, it's not like a repeat of the decade, but you do see influences.

Low-rise jeans. Heck, low-rise everything.

No kidding! Last Christmas (2008), it took me three days to get to Oregon for a long-awaited family Christmas. Bad weather. Luggage ended up in Phoenix. I literally had no clothes, other than what I was wearing and a few pieces purchased at Shopko in Boise during a 2-night stay there.! DD (age 28) gave me a pair of her low-rise Anne Klein jeans to wear for the duration. She's shorter and wider, I'm taller and thinner. Imagine this Winter Chicken wearing low-rise jeans that sat below my "mature" hips with a 3" zipper! Flared length was OK, but looked funny with my Sperry Topsiders. That 3" zipper tore my Depends to shreds, too! Had to wear a very wide donated belt just to hold them up. Had to take the belt off while going through security on the flight back, and these jeans dropped to the floor. This really is a true story - except for the Depends. (8-pack of Wal-Mart undies). DIL offered to lend me her size -2 size cute top, the bottom of which barely covered my neck. I still have these jeans and the wide belt. Really hate anything low-rise!

The one thing I love about this past decade are capri pants. Still wear them!

Boys hairstyles are completely different from early 00s to late 00s. The messy look also phased through. You don't see the pajama pants on girls or the falling off jeans on guys anymore. Well you do see them, but in places where people are generally behind the times already.

There was the arrival of the skinny jean, which sort of seemed to push out the super low rise flare leg jean. And of course Uggs.

I still have the original hip hugger bell bottom white jeans I bought on Sunset Strip in 1966. They look a lot like the low-rise jeans of this past decade, but with much more flare. No zipper...just buttons. My body size hasn't changed much, either, but these are a size 6. In the 60's, bubble cut big hair was in style. Tons of teasing! Now, you can buy "Bump its" to get the same effect. The 80's were all about severely permed hair. The 90s and early 2000 were all about severely straight hair. Soft curl is back, and will probably get curlier. What goes around comes around, in the scheme of things. Expect (gasp) padded shoulders and culottes in this new decade!

I'm now trying to find my 1957 patent leather tap shoes and 1954 Buster Browns. Oh, wait! They're hidden under my Bobbsey Twin book collection!

My first thought was Skinny Jeans also. And seems like everyone wears black all the time. You rarely see colors any more.

It's hard to say because the styles generally don't last 10 years. For the last few years at least, girl's have had straight hair with wide-swept bangs. Also, colored hair (not just blonde highlights) like purple, pink, etc.. seemed to be more prominent. For men, the goatee was very popular. You rarely saw men with full beards.

Beaded jewelry became popular again (the home-made look). Designer sunglasses were very popular and went from very small frames, to a huge as they could be (everyone looked like flies) and now they are getting smaller again. Lower back tatoos were also popular in the 2000's.

You're right. Many of the girls and guys here still wear the "combover bangs". You part your hair right above your ear and comb the whole mess over to the other side. Doesn't matter if you can see or not. Think this (bad) trend was started by Lauren Conrad a few years ago. Really ugly! Some of HS boys here still do the faux Beatles cut with the bangs going in one direction, covering the nose. It's hard to fluff your boxers while wearing skinny jeans. I do miss my Crocs, though. Most comfortable shoes I've ever worn! What I HATE HATE HATE is the combo low vest with puffy short sleeves. Ranks right up there with the Ben Casey shirt of the early 60's.

Definitely tired of low rise and seeing underwear or crack or a belly roll. Oh, baby doll tops-everyone looks pregnant.

Sounds like an Ellen thing. Not sure this look will last long, though. I see shorter, curlier, and naturally colored hair in the future. (Which might mean that the Judge shows might lose a bit of money). I also see an end to the "grizzled" (I shave every four days) look. What were they thinking?

Hope that skinny jeans come with an elastic waist version!

Yep those are the hairstyles. Although I'm noticing those are also less extreme now. Boys' hair is getting shorter, although still shagging. Girls are getting their hair out of their eyes. I think generally because wavy hair is in, so people are working their way back to a more centered part and less bangs.

i have seen those...

shift dresses have been pretty popular the last few years.
high waisted skirts.
leggings under skirts and dresses. and, more recently, leggings under shorts.
