Sometimes people on the opposite end of the argument are like dogs with bones - they sit at their computers 24/7 and things can get quite stressful. Eventually I just have to bow out for the sake of my mental health - I have complex issues - and sure as eggs are eggs they go, “So you have no further arguments then? I win!” Equally, quite often things can get heated just when I'm drifting off to sleep, just when people in America are getting going, sort of forcing a polite YAGE from me, and again they're like, "Oh, you're going? So I win!"

Pathetic.

Meh. Let them think they “won”. What does it matter? You know you bowed out because they were annoying jerks so you were the real winner by taking the high road.

I've taken a long break from the "other side" after a death in my family.
I have not missed the "conversations" AT ALL.

Don't worry, NIC, it doesn't matter in the long run.
Just reply if/when you want to - the "I win" mentality only matters to that person.

I’m sorry for your loss. I hope the good memories outweigh the grief.

I never signed up for the other side. I sometimes wonder what I’m missing but honestly I don’t want more drama and anger in my life, not saying that’s what’s there haven’t been there, but would rather avoid that where I can in life.

The 'other side'? Does that mean the controversial topic thread on this board or something else? Never been there either.

I don't generally argue with people online. I don't find arguing enjoyable. I state my opinion on a topic, might respond once to an arguer, then I usually just move on and ignore the thread!

I generally don't mind a *bit* of a scrap, but as I've said, I have problems which make my blood pressure soar and my mental health dip alarmingly, so I have to bow out. Hence the Sheldon Cooper Complex.

@luvthatduke, I'm so sorry :(

There are people who are set in their ways and no matter what facts you may present to the contrary, they are determined that they are right and won’t budge. They don’t win . . . they’re just stubborn. That’s one of those “We’ll have to agree to disagree.” moments. Don’t allow them to make you feel bad when it’s their issue, not yours.

I enjoy a good debate where all the participants have an open mind and are able to actually listen and learn from opposing points of view. It still doesn’t mean both sides will agree, but they can respect the other person’s opinion in spite of it.

So, are previous posters right, that this is related to something on the Controversial Topics forum? Just my opinion, but it doesn't seem right to bring a grievance from that forum down here. There's a reason that forum is opt-in/hidden/separate from this one.

Generally speaking, I enjoy the cut and thrust of the Controversial Topics forum - it's just when people adopt the aforementioned stance that it irritates me. All I can do is walk away and leave them to crow to themselves. Which isn't as bad as it sounds, now that I reflect on it. Just petty people. Let them shout to the wind.

Walking away is often the best course of action. But posting about it down here isn't exactly walking away, is it?

I think there are a number of people on message boards and/or social media who want to be argumentative, always be right or have the last word whatever the topic. We are all adults here, so it is uncalled for when some feel the need to talk down to others like they are scolding a small child. The IGNORE feature is great for those types. Don't engage with them or let them argue with someone else. Some will eventually realize they have no one here to argue with and move on to some other site if enough people ignore them. Also helpful to have a thick skin if you plan to engage with anonymous strangers online when you have no idea what their real motivations are.
