The Sea Life is Beginning to Wash Up!

We are starting to see more and more reports on our local news of our sea life washing up on the shores of our beaches. I am so sad about this. I feel so bad for our local fishermen and the others who support their families on our gulf waters. I fear that the life as I know it here along the gulf coast is about to change forever! :sad1:

It so sad. I'm waiting for gas prices to start to show because of it.

It is disgusting! The entire incident is heartbreaking. From the lives lost to the huge ecological disaster. The "spill" tripled in size over 3 days!

This should have never happened.

I am amazed by this also. I remember the early reports stating how small this spill was when compared to what Alaska went through with Exxon. In just a few short days it, suddenly, became far worse.

It really is sad, and I'm sure we're only seeing the early parts of something that is going to be even worse.

Last night on the news they said that 1 million barrels of oil are leaking into the Gulf of Mexico each day that the leak is not contained. There are over 3 leaks and they are all 5000 feet down so they are having a hard time closing them off. I just don't understand how this happened! Some people around here are saying it was some kind of attack...I'm not saying that....I've just heard people saying things like that. :confused3

You know it is bad, when BP is asking for any type of help shutting it off. I heard it could take 5-6 days before something is ready to go and getting it shut off.

BP said on the news last night that they are trying to train all of the fishermen that are now out of work to help with the clean up so they can at least be getting paid for something while they can't fish. I bet that offer comes with a nice contract saying that if they work to clean up that they won't sue BP!

Meanwhile, on the other side. 20 Sea Turtles and a load of jellyfish have washed onshore dead. I am beside myself! The front page of our newspaper has images of the turtles being placed into garbage bags!!! :sad1:

You know how the meat industry has Veggie Libel Laws? Well you can be sure that BP will make sure they get their own version. Regardless of how your life was affected by THEIR problem you won't be able to say "Boo!" publicly about it without fear of being sued. Another disgusting part of this story that is yet to play out.

Drill, baby, drill

yep! We are all partially responsible because of our appetite for oil. Remember last year, when prices were so high, people cut their consumption? With a high demand for cheap fuel, this is what can happen. It's very sad.

This country consumes 25% of the worlds energy and we are only ~7% of the worlds population. We use up almost 20 million bbl/day while only producing 6 million bbl/day. some things got to give.

I'm so sorry to hear this.

My DD and family lived just north of the Perdido Key bridge in a nice subdivision for a couple years, so I spent a lot of time on the Perdido/Orange Beach/Pensacola beaches and enjoyed every minute of it.

This is such a shame.

herc.

I agree. The sad thing, though, is that nothing will give. To most people, the Gulf of Mexico seems like a world away. Even if it affects prices, they will find a way to scrimp and save so they can continue to consume the same amount of energy. Sad on so many levels.

I am scared to death with what is going to happen. It could take up to 3 months to contain it. My DH is employed by FL Fish & Wildlife. This is going to be bad. I've signed up with Save our Seabirds and Mote Aquarium. Who knows what's going to happen here in FL.

Gov. Charlie Crist today expanded an executive order declaring a state of emergency in the Panhandle to include all counties on Florida's west coast as far south as Sarasota.

Crist says officials do not yet have an estimate of what it is going to cost to clean up Florida's shorelines if a massive oil spill reaches the state.

Crist, though, said that Florida would send the bill to the “responsible party" — BP PLC, the oil company that leased the drilling rig that exploded and continues to leak oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

The governor said he shared the frustration of local officials who are worried about not having enough floating booms to protect their beaches.

People here are signing up feverishly to volunteer to help with clean up efforts. However, I think a lot of people have the wrong idea about what the clean up will be about. They see the liquid Dawn commercial with the person gently pouring soapy water over the bird's head....this is not reality. The animals will probably be sick and maybe even confrontational. Also, people need to understand that anything that comes from the Earth's core is bound to be radioactive. Special training will have to be given with all of this.
