The Save Money for Disney Thread (Tips Included)

#1: Spare Change. Yes, everytime you go out to eat and end up with change, put it in a bottle for safe keeping.
Pointing out the obvious: Eating at home or brown bagging would save even more!

Instead of keeping your savings in a jar, where it's going to be pilfered for newspaper money and lunch money, consider having a portion of each paycheck directly deposited into a separate vacation savings account. Set up that savings account at a bank that's not too convenient for you -- and don't get an ATM card for that account. That means your vacations savings are safely stored in the bank, but you can't get at them without making a special effort; thus, you won't spend them on impulse.
#4: Blogging for dollars. I make money on the side by monetizing my website blogs with google Adsense ads.
I don't know anything about that, but do you know about www.epinions.com? You write reviews of products you've used, and you get paid for it -- not much, of course, but it also isn't difficult. The beauty of this is that you keep getting paid for your old reviews; they don't disappear over time. It's also a good place to look for advice on lots of things.
I'm pretty sold on the Disney Visa Rewards program. I use my Disney Visa for absolutely anything and everything that accepts Visa... groceries, online purchases, fast food, kids' martial arts classes... everything. We pay it in full every month.
This is a great savings technique -- as long as, as you point out, you pay it off in full every month! You're going to buy groceries, gas, etc. every month anyway, so get back just a little bit of that money. We don't use the Disney Visa card, but we use a different reward card.
No buying magazines . . . No buying books . . . No meals out . . . Try to limit driving the car to one "outing" a week, other than for work, and combine all errands on that one trip (groceries, any other shopping, taking things to the courier, etc.)
These are all great tips. I usually take my kids to the library every two weeks, and I read all the magazines that I want while they poke around making their slooooow choices. You can also check out books on tape (upload them to your ipod and listen to them in the car -- we always get something for the family for car trips, and I always get a grown-up book on tape for myself since I cannot read in the car). You can also check out videos -- many of the same ones that're at Blockbuster. Something I'll add: If, like me, you have trouble remembering to return your library books on time, check out www.libraryelf.com -- it'll send you an email reminding you to return your book; thus, you'll avoid fines.

More hints:

Both DH and I are pretty bad about popping .50 into the soda machine at work, which doesn't make sense considering 12-packs go on sale all the time for $2.50. Same thing for snacks. We also try to keep small cans of Beanie-weenies, tuna, crackers, applesauce and fruit coctail in our desks; they don't make for a great lunch, but they're better than the vending machine -- he doesn't always have time to go out, and I cannot leave the building at lunchtime.

What are your health insurance and automobile insurance deductibles? If they're only $100 like most people's, consider raising them. Yes, there is risk here, so consider your own circumstances. By raising our automobile deductible to $1000 (might have to pay money), we slashed our premiums (definitely have to pay money) in half; I've been driving about 25 years and have never filed a claim. Same thing with health insurance; we dropped to what is essentially "major medical" only and cut our health insurance premiums by 90%. We're paying for TWO kids' BRACES with that savings. Yes, we pay for our doctor visits out-of-pocket (we've only had four doctor visits and two 'scripts in the past two years), but with the savings, we can afford to do so -- and we're covered in case of something catestrophic. Note that these are calculated risks; we have money in the bank and can afford to pay if something bad happens.

There are two ways to save money: Make more money (epinions, soda cans) or spend less (brown bagging, driving fewer miles). To really save money, you need to do BOTH.

Mrs. Pete - Your observation that it takes BOTH spending less and saving more to have success reminds me of losing weight: It takes both exercise and eating better to make it work!

I love this thread. We all need some motivation sometimes not to fall back into bad spending patterns so we can go back to Disney World.

I've recently heard of a concept called "snowflaking" from www.thesimpledollar.com. You've probably heard of a "debt snowball," where you pay off your smallest debt first, then add that payment on to the next debt, etc. Snowflaking is where you decide that you WON'T buy something, and then immediately put that money into your savings account, envelope, big glass jar, etc.

For example: I have a pop habit, and often stop by the convenience store to get a fountain beverage for about $1 each. If I decide NOT to buy a pop tomorrow, instead I would put $1 into my Disney Savings envelope.

Or, if it's something bigger (not going out to eat, not buying a video game, etc.) you do the same thing. Small steps, but it works.

We also use the envelope system for our budget. Every week we take out the cash we need for things like gas and groceries and separate it into about 10 envelopes. Some categories we need to save up from week to week, like car repairs or clothing, but for other categories we take whatever is left over (sometimes just a few bucks) and put that into our Disney fund.

It goes without saying that these are obviously small saving ideas. But you can also do the big things: eat out infrequently, carry insurance with high deductibles but lower payments, don't carry credit card or car debt, etc.

My husband and I both have "second" jobs, kind of. (I'm a stay-at-home Mom). He does freelance web design and I teach piano lessons. I take all of my lesson $$ to save for the trip, and whatever we don't eke out of our regular budget will be covered by his freelance work.

So, we're trying to do both - save more and earn more!

Ritchie - thanks again for starting this thread and an enormous congratulations to you on finishing medical school! Enjoy your next WDW trip! :)

I have it installed with firefox, they just switched from google to yahoo today to give increased payouts. There's some problems with getting the plugin installed today. Give it till tomorrow and it should work again. I got an email back today.

Back to packing :) Love the posts, keep em coming.

Round up to next dollar with check book.

Everytime I write a check or update my check book with my receipts I round up to the next dollar amout...ie.. starbucks $3.92 round up to $4. Then at the end of the month I "collect" my change BIG BUCKS!

Also easier to add and subtract...no cents to confuse. At least for me anyway.

We also cash in cans, at 5 cents a pop (pun intended :lmao: )
AND - my brilliant DH came across an easy way to save that is almost painless and best of all it WORKS -
Instead of keeping a check register, we now keep one of those accountant-type books with the double columns (cheap in any stationary store) In one column he keeps track of our spending, but he rounds every transaction up by one dollar. That money just kind of "disappears" into our checking, it is kind of like it is no longer there. In the other column, he keeps track of our expenses in real dollars. When the columns get to be a few hundred dollars different, he transfers the "extra" over to savings and we start all over.
Genius, eh? You would be surprised how many transactions a family makes in a single month - the $1 here and there adds up fast!

:rotfl2: Oh my...I just posted something similar. I'm sorry. I never read the rest of the posts until after I posted. Isn't it great though?!

Okay, so for those of you that recycle "pop" cans.... How do you do this? Where do you store the cans and how do you keep from making a mess. To be honest, we could probably save a little bit of money for our next Disney trip if we recycled our cans, but I don't know where to store them and how to keep ants away. I know you need to rinse the cans, but how often to you take them to recycle and how many do you really need to make any $?

Please help me with this so that I can convince DH that this is a good way to save a little $ for our trip.

Thanks,

Tinkerbell - Some states have bottle recycling laws that help curb littering. Here in Michigan we get 10 cents per can returned, because we pay a 10 cent deposit on every can or bottle we purchase. Other states have similar laws, but it's usually 5 cents instead.

I just rinse the cans and throw them in the plastic bags I get at the grocery store. I've never had problems with bugs. B/c this is so common in our state, our grocery stores actually have machines where you can put the cans/bottles and it automatically tallies the total money owed you, which is then printed out and you can take it up to the checkout and either use it toward your purchase or redeem it as cash.

I'm not sure what the procedures are in other states. Good luck!

We are leaving on June 20th for our Disney Vacation. I have done several of the things already mentioned. I save all of our bottles and cans to recycle for money. It isn't huge money, but it adds up. I also make money from inboxdollars.com. I got my first $60 check last week and I have another $30 check coming this week. I save all change and occasionally through single dollar bills in the jar. We have $426 on our rewards card for our trip which will pay for all of our counter service meals.

The biggest and most unexpected way we made money was this weekend. We had a yard sale. It is a large community yard sale, so there were literally hundreds of people. I went in hoping to make $200 BUT we cleared over
$500. Needless to say, we were really thrilled. I could not believe the things that people paid to buy from us. I did not price things very high either because our real goal was just to clear our our garage. Utilize yard sales, ebay and craig's list to not only clear out your house, but to make that extra money for Disney.

yard sale...I so need to do a yard sale. Someone PMed me and mentioned scrap gold sales. I'll have to put that up there too! :thumbsup2

I'll check out inboxdollars.com I'll make a master list of these pay programs but only after I find proof that each one pays out. Nothing is worse than doing something and not getting paid. ::cop:

I'm still packing the same room I started, but it's getting smaller :P Also if you sign up for the Web search thing on the first page, if my name appears on the screen like "Friend of Richie Truxillo" then the link to download the plugin should work. If you are directed somewhere else, the plugin will not install without having an ID on the end of the URL. Sounds like growing pains from expanding. Was working great for the past couple months though so I am sure they will be back on their feet running starting Monday.

I also second the saving change..

While me and DH were at WDW a few weeks ago we were in Club Cool and they sell Coca Cola items.. I found a cute Coca Cola can bank.. I bought it and moved all my change into there for our Disney trips..

I thought it was a cute way to remember that every penny that goes in there will get me closer to Club Cool..

Forgot to add that I also do Sunshine Rewards and Mypoints..

I also automatically put $ into my Ing account each payday..

It all adds up so quickly..

I do not normally use yahoo for anything but my email, so I don't believe that clicking thing, will be of any use to me after all, besides with an older computer there is no telling what will install properly if at all, and then it could make it freeze up, I really hate it when that happens.

Not to worry, there are plenty of ways to make money still! Shame they moved away from google results though. I think it is because Yahoo pays out a minimum of 3p (6 cents) a completed search. They are trying to recapture some market share after Google has been trouncing everyone.

Found a boatload of change in a cup hidden behind my computer desk :) off to the bank it goes.

I hope they go back to google, I just don't think that I will yield the same results with yahoo, that is the reason why I normally do not use them.

On the pop can thing. I mentioned the aluminum parts my hubby drug home, but we do the cans too. We don't pay deposits here, so we don't get a certain amount per can doing it that way. Here we do them as salvage/recycling. There are various companies that take them in, and then you get paid for the weight of the aluminum. You should be able to find them in your local phone book. To store them, we rinse them out, smash them flat, and put them in a large outdoor garbage can with a lid that clamps down. No problems with bugs at all. We line the can so we can pull out full bags and tie them shut.

You need to check how it works in your state, though. My sister lives in Oregon, and they do the deposit thing. They have those machines that another poster mentioned that you feed the cans into, but it has to be able to read the barcodes, so if you smash them like we do, they are no good.

Starting today, I am putting $5.00 in a coffee can to replace what I normally give my 16 yo son for lunch every day. If I do this all summer, including weekends, and then for 3 weeks when he goes back to school in August and September, we should have an extra $485.00 for our trip in September.:goodvibes

I'm chuckling over this b/c I have a 16yo boy and for every $5 that he would use to buy food when he's at school, I spend $10 to feed him when he's home. Maybe it's b/c they purchase food in bulk and can prepare it more efficiently than I can at home. But having a teenage boy home during the summer will mean that my grocery bill will rise considerably! No savings there for me!

For anyone who doesn't want to get a Disney Visa, or can't qualify, try checking into rewards program through your bank's check card. We pay a $20 a year member fee for Chase Bank Rewards, and we've already earned $200 in gift cards to pay for gas and meals on the way to Disney. They do have free rewards programs which are a point per dollar, but we upped to the 4 pts per dollar program. We earned back our $20 free in the first 2 months.

We also do the spare change thing - and it adds up quick too!

One other thing I do, to help me stick with my budget - is put anything left over on my weekly spending "allowance" in a separate envelope for Disney. For example, let's say you get $100 a week for groceries/gas/eating out. If you only spend $75 this week, you'd have $25 to put in the Disney fund. It really helps me plan my meals for the week, and I actually stick to my grocery list. And by saving my "leftover allowance", I have enough money to pay for all of our meals at Disney and a few extras at Disney, including BBB for DD!
