The Running Thread --2025

ATTQOTD: For me, long runs are on Sundays. Originally this was because as a tennis team captain, I organized practices for Saturday mornings, which then gave less time/convenience for a Saturday long run. I don't necessarily do this any more, but Sundays are still our "least scheduled" day - my husband usually doesn't plan to do much except yard work, and in the fall, watch football of some kind. So I have the day free to do what I need for a long run. For trail running long runs, when you include the time getting to/from the trailhead, it can make them quite a bit longer.

And when I say "I have the day free to do what I need for a long run", that includes somehow fitting in my various chores, etc., but at least it's up to me to decide how to schedule everything.

ATTQOTD Usually my long run is Monday morning, with Sunday and Tuesday as rest days. I was fortunate enough to retire early a few years ago and now save weekends (Sat afternoon-Sun) for family and friends and then fit the never ending chores and yard work in whenever I need to get things done. If the weather is too bad it’s easy enough for me to change the running schedule but I try to keep it M,W-S.

ATTQOTD: My long runs are on Sundays, at whatever time I can fit them in. This time of year that's usually as early as I can get out the door to beat the heat (as if, lol). I use a cumulative fatigue-based plan that requires me to do a (relatively) short and easy run the day before to tire my legs. That pretty much has to happen on Saturday so that I can get the paired runs in during the weekend.

Thank you for sharing this! It's so easy to compare myself to "fast" runners, and always feel like I'm slow. Even finishing 1st in my age group for a local 5k, I justified it by saying it was a small race.

QOTD: Since long runs are being discussed I wanted to ask the group when do you do you long runs and why?

ATTQOTD: …I do not like running on Sundays for the most part. Sunday mornings we cook a big breakfast and then attend church. The rest of the day is spent relaxing as much as possible and maybe cooking a Sunday dinner. I just like a lazy Sunday so I try really hard not to run on Sundays lol.
Ditto for Saturday long runs for these reasons, except the big breakfast is usually cereal or yogurt with berries, before church.

For much of the year, a good number of Sunday mornings are reserved for watching F1 races, and the rest I like having the freedom to sleep late before starting the grind of another work week.
It has been a good F1 season so far, and the past couple of races have been particularly entertaining. I'm usually at church on Sunday mornings, so I usually have to watch the races on delay (and avoid spoilers!). To my surprise, the DW, who doesn't care for racing, wanted to see the F1 movie and enjoyed it.

Long runs? 5 or more miles during the summer. When it starts to cool off in Sep and training starts in earnest, then "long" becomes 6 or more miles, usually on a Sunday afternoon. Said with the awareness that I have historically been bad at doing the long runs. My longest have usually gone maybe 9 miles is all. I need to do better with that. I should probably do as Mr Galloway advises and at least walk it. <sigh> Knowing what I should do vs what I wind up doing....

ATTQOTD: Typically whatever I run on Saturday, though occasionally I’ve done them on Sunday from time to time. Tuesday and Thursday are my maintenance days with 4 and 5 miles respectively. Though that can change to depending on my work schedule. I have to be in the office 3/week and I prefer to work from home on Thursday and Friday. Long run currently was 7-8 miles.

ATTQOTD; My long run is typically on Sunday - but I will adjust to Saturday when I need to. Whether that's due to other things going on or because the weather is better. Since I usually slot a short recovery run for Saturdays it's easy for me to flip the runs.

It has been a good F1 season - though it would be nice if more than 1 team was competitive- at least McLaren is letting their drivers race each other. (and I still haven't found the time to see the F1 movie!). I also usually watch on delay shortly after my Sunday morning long run.

ATTQOTD: (1) Long runs are anything more than 6-ish miles, i.e., carrying fueling options or making a pit stop back at the car. (2) generally the long runs are on Saturdays. We also subscribe to the cumulative fatigue with back to back runs. There's an indoor track that we use when the weather is bad and it's only open during the week. It's too hard to do a long run on that indoor track, it's 7-8 laps per mile.

End of July already, slowed down about a minute/mile but put in some extra runs and miles beyond my average month. I feel good about the upcoming fall races but not confident about crushing a BQ. With a vacation mid August, we’ll see what the next couple months add up to.

July running:

- 180.05 miles (yes I ran long today with a questionable AQI 🙈)
- 34:15:08. Whew!
- 12 strength sessions

Halfway through my marathon plan and had my highest mileage month ever!!! I got a sample pack of LMNT with my last Feed order and so far I like the watermelon and grapefruit. I’ve decided the Adidas Boston 12s are my Cinderella slipper. I’m in love with these shoes and was lucky enough to grab a second pair for $64 earlier in the month 🤩

July 2025
Running: 32h 52m, 200.1 miles
Biking: 3h 38m, 41.8 miles
Strength/mobility: 7h 49m
Total: 44h 21m

I keep telling myself, "I'm not getting slower; it's just the weather." It's not really helping.

Just tipped over 200 with an extra little bit today. Would have been about 225, but I missed a few runs when I rolled my ankle (hence the biking).

July total: 31 miles

Low mileage month, but I have a good excuse. We went on a big vacation to China!

Of course I had to climb the Great Wall higher than anyone else in my family and tour group. 😜 Total jello legs, felt like I ran a marathon! I gained 1000 feet in just a half mile and it wasn’t any easier on the way down. I recorded this on my Garmin as a hike, and I was moving so slowly it didn’t even register a pace. 🤣

July Running:
Total distance: 105.25 mi
Average pace: 11:13/mi

Working a recycled DopeyBadger plan for the Philly 10k end of August. 10k training actually helped me claw back one of the VO2Max points that I have gradually lost over the past almost 2 years! Those feel very hard-won at my age. Hoping fall weather eventually reveals some rewards for the speedwork in the heat I've been doing.
Still doing the planks challenge with long-distance friends though I do forget to do it more often than when we first started. I've finally bitten the bullet and moved over to doing squats and deadlifts etc with heavier weight but fewer reps. Don't know if it's moved the needle on my strength at all.
Kudos to everyone getting out there this summer. It's really been something.
