The Running Thread --2025

ATTQOTD: I think I've read in various training guidance that a "long run" is something over an hour.

When I'm cheering my connections on Garmin, I don't say it's a "long run" unless it's at least 7 miles. This is sort of to make sure it's over about an hour and so I'm not calling everyone's daily 10k a "long run". If it's something you're doing frequently (like some people do for 10ks), then I don't think it can be considered a "long run".

For me, it's usually my longest run of the week, but even so, I wouldn't call it a "long run" unless it was at least 70 minutes. Since I trail run, I do everything by time, because the distances can be quite different depending on terrain.

ATTQOTD Depends on your level of experience and where you are if you are following a plan, could just be a few miles for someone starting out or coming off an injury. For me personally it’s 10 miles, that’s my minimum every Monday and goes up from there when a HM or longer is on the calendar.

Following up on my earlier questions about trail shoes…

I went ahead and bought the Altra Exerience Wild at a nice discount and tried them this morning… OH WOW!!! They were incredible on the wet, mucky dirt & gravel trails. They were equally great on pavement coated in wet leaves, pine needles, sand, mud, and general FL summer muck. Really nice on rocky gravel. They were surprisingly also great on chunky asphalt and even smooth cement - super springy! It was amazing to realize how much extra effort I’ve used for years trying to either avoid patches of low grip surface or tip-toeing and sliding through it. I’m so glad I gave these a try!

QOTD: What do you consider a long run?

ATTQOTD: During the dog days of summer, a double digit run is what I consider a long run. Per the marathon training program I use 10-14 miles is a medium long run and anything over 14 is a long run. However, I understand that depending on the race you are training for and different plans will call out things differently. So, its really all up to the person running on what they want to call their long run.

QOTD: Since long runs are being discussed I wanted to ask the group when do you do you long runs and why?

ATTQOTD: I normally try to run mine on Saturday mornings. Saturdays for a few reasons. No work on Saturday for me, which gives me more time to complete the run. I normally run on LSU's campus during football season so I have my parking spot and tailgate set up to enjoy post run. I do bike off campus to use a shower. At times I have to move my long run to Fridays because the kids may have a early Saturday sporting event or we wont be in town that day. I do not like running on Sundays for the most part. Sunday mornings we cook a big breakfast and then attend church. The rest of the day is spent relaxing as much as possible and maybe cooking a Sunday dinner. I just like a lazy Sunday so I try really hard not to run on Sundays lol.

ATTQOTD: I used to do them on Sundays, because if we're doing something on the weekend, it's probably going to be on Saturday. But I can't get an early start on Sundays because my grandma and I call my mother, and by the time we're done, it almost time for lunch, so then I have to eat, and then let my food settle, and by the time I can go out and run, it's like 1pm and hot. So Saturdays it is.

And this is actually ideal for my new TCMW Loony training plan; I WFH Mondays and Fridays, so those are my speed interval workout days because home is where the treadmill is. Tuesdays and Thursdays are single-pace runs, so I can do those on the trail next to my office. The only race at Loony that I need to hit a goal pace in is the 10K, because I want to be finished before the 5K starts (there's a grace period to start the 5K late, but I don't want to do that), so having a speed day followed by the long run day every week will be practice for race weekend.

ATTQOTD: 1- late to the game but also consider the long run my longest of the week. 2- Most weeks I do my long run on Saturday mornings. But if we have plans I sometimes will switch it to Friday depending on the length and where I am in my training cycle. I get out of work early on Fridays so I can do a long run on the afternoon. I don’t get to practice race conditions for fueling this way so I don’t do this regularly. But is nice to have it done before the weekend has even begun

Attqotd(s): my long run is whatever my end of week run is. Oddly this week per my training plan, my long run is shorter than my tempo workout(including wu and cd)

I run my long run on Sundays, as I don’t have to hurry anywhere and I can usually duck out of work early
