The Running Thread --2025

I feel like that's a good concept, but possibly very limiting in how you position your hat. Some people barely have their hat on their head (think trucker hats) while others have their hat *all* the way on their head, but have the bill tipped up higher.
Exactly! But the idea of one less thing hanging on my ears is intriguing. I'm already wearing Shokz and often an ear headband, along with (right now) my RX transitions.

I wanted to give an update to this previous post...

My doctor recommended surgery to deal with my sports hernia. He said they don't typically heal on their own. My local hospital doesn't do the surgery, so he referred me to a place in Philadelphia (~3 hours away). Most insurances don't cover the surgery, but mine is one that often does. After weeks of back and forth with the insurance and the institute where I am scheduled for surgery, I received confirmation that my evaluation appointment, another MRI, surgery and post-surgery PT session would be covered. Phew!

I am currently scheduled for surgery next week (July 8).

Now, the interesting development. The injury wasn't bothering me during everyday life; only during running. I decided to test it with a couple of runs. Nothing seemed to get worse. I've now been running the last couple of weeks. Mostly what are supposed to be easy runs (although they are harder than I am used to due to time off!).

I head to Philadelphia Monday morning for an MRI and evaluation, with surgery scheduled for the next day. But I'm having very little/few symptoms. It will be interesting to see what the new MRI and evaluation show!
Another update from me...

I had my MRI yesterday and it showed that surgery was the best choice. I had surgery this morning and am now on the road to recovery. Luckily, the recovery is relatively active (I'm supposed to walk 1-mile per day starting two days after surgery). I should be fully recovered in 6 weeks.

I'm definitely sore today, but I have my first PT appt. tomorrow and then head home (I had the surgery ~3 hours from home). I think week 3 has me doing some jogging already. My surgeon seemed to think doing Dopey in January will be no problem. Well, at least as no problem as 48.6 miles in four days can be.

Glad it went okay! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Anyone else following Badwater 135 today? I just caught up on a bunch of pics and videos and I’m just saying: I’m not sure Western Way during the WDW Marathon that insanely hot year when they cut the course was far off from how Badwater looks. :rotfl:
One of this year’s runners is someone I follow on Instagram and YouTube, Jeff Pelletier. He makes really amazing films of his races so I can’t wait for the documentary from this one! The one about Susie Chan from last year was so inspiring - and crazy!

Truth! While the tech has gotten dramatically better, it still takes a good 30 seconds for mine to change enough for me to see clearly. I've been kicking around trying clip-on shades for my frames, but that seems like a pain to stash and retrieve. I have seen some targeted ads for clip-on shades that attach to a hat or visor brim and flip up out of the way when not needed. I do usually wear a visor for longer distances if sun is forecasted, so I'm curious how well those actually work.
I have pretty much stuck to transitions for the last year. What I think they are great for is gradual “transitions”. From early morning light to sunlight or late afternoon to dusk. Completely agree they do t work well if you’re constantly going from sun to shade. They are perfect for Marathon weekend type runs where you start in the dark and finish in bright sunlight.

I remember following Dean Karnazes back in the day when he ran multiple Badwaters. He would train by running in place in a sauna, and would wear trail shoes during the race because they melted slower. The whole race is insane—you start below sea level and then it’s all uphill to Mt. Whitney for a gain of 14,600’ elevation. Plus there’s no on-course support, so you have to crew it yourself.

Sounds encouraging. Good luck with the recovery. Just don't push it too hard. Long term gain and all that.

This sounds like my worst nightmare.

Some of in places like Atlanta, Houston, or Florida can do that by just going outside....
Floridian here: can confirm I’ve had pavement melt the soles of my shoes. I had one pair that made little suction sounds with every step on the hot asphalt of August. I’m certain that the combination of extreme heat + rough sidewalk surfaces (because most are concrete mixed with crushed shells) break down my soles faster than they would otherwise. On a long run earlier this week my brain decided to overthink speed error on my treadmill. So I did some rough video analysis (painted an approximately inch square white on the black belt, measured the belt length, had a program count frames between seeing the white square at the same spot) to calculate speed. This probably isn't the kind of thing people are super interested in, but if anyone were going to be, I figured it'd be here on a Sunday.

I got my Pro Form 995-SEL treadmill in a broken condition from one of the Habitat for Humanity REStores (which area great!) for $10. so I assumed it'd be on the worse end for this test.

Data were collected while not running (I imagine running would make it slightly worse), after the belt had come to speed, averaged over 30 seconds. My treadmill claims to max out at 10mph which probably explains the spike in error at the top end. All error was too slow.

This is so cool. Every time I run on my treadmill I wonder how accurate it is, since the paces feel so much faster than when I'm running outside.

Re: treadmills - I did a very basic calibration on mine, measuring the length of the belt and using the seam of the belt as my guide to math it out at various speeds… oh, she’s WAY off at the lower end lol! Like, moving easily 1/2 a mile faster than what’s shown from 1-3 MPH. Weirdly, it gets a little more accurate at 4 MPH, a little more at 5 MPH, and I stopped measuring at 6 because I can’t run that fast, anyway. It was very reassuring to find that I was not crazy: the treadmill was, in fact, moving much faster than indicated!

So… I don’t have posterior tibialis tendinitis like I thought. I have an appointment with a podiatrist tomorrow, that I made last week, but I saw my chiro today and she checked my foot out and declared it’s PF 😫. I was shocked because if there’s one spot that hasn’t hurt is my heel.

Update since i went to PT on Monday. First off I was pretty sure i was going to have to wait 2 more weeks to run, and then i would start with a 1 minute run 2 minute walk. I figured i would get 10 intervals, so 10 minutes of running. Well, surprise, she said i could run this week. i said 1 minute of running, and she said no, no , no. I was allowed 30 sec run and 1.5 minute walk. I could do it 10 times. A whole 5 minutes of total running. I am to do this for 2 weeks. Then i can add a little more running. I am set to see her in three weeks.

Excited yes, but also sad, because i am starting over again.

I did run Tues and Thurs, so far so good. Trying hard to remember it is 5 more minutes of running than what i was doing last week. I have 5 months to get ready for the half. Not sure i will make it back to 3 min run/1 min walk by then but should be at a 2/1 at least.

It was one of those runs where you just wanted to lie down on someone’s lawn and wait for their sprinklers to come on. (I’ve had that particular meltdown in the past) Thanks to a brief chat with a dog owner (and of course, some dog petting), another chat with a sister (you know you’re old when it’s about statins and liver and muscle enzyme levels) and lots of water, I made it. I guess the upside of running for fun (no training) is that you don’t freak out about elapsed time vs running time.
