The Running Thread --2025

Do any males run in compression shorts? If so, any favorites?

I need to get a pair of compression shorts for something else and figured I'd try to get a pair that I can use for running as well.

Most of the distance runners on my kid's track team wear half tights. DS2 has a pair of nike ones (not the $$$ ones) and a pair of chicken legs. He prefers the chicken legs ones because they're not as compressing (and they're pretty affordable.)

Janji is likely to be suggested a lot.

I wanted to try some and was disappointed by "DEVOPS" on Amazon, aka the cheapest pair available on Amazon about a year ago.

Following along this thread since that probably wasn't a fair test for the whole concept.

As a male, I have a couple pairs of janji compression tight shorts and like them. From the multiple pockets to the weight which are great and the ones I have they provide a 2 layer modest front which I've never felt over exposed or the need to wear under-gear with them. Rabbit and Flipbelt are other ones I've wanted to try.

I own 2 pairs of Janji half tights. One an XL and the other a large. I bought the XL first and after running a 5k I realized that I should probably get a a large. Based on my measurements I was in between both. I bought them at an REI when they were on sale. I prefer the large as it fits a little better but I still like my XL and use that as well on my maintenance runs. I just bought a pair of lululemon half tights over the weekend because they’re on sale. So that makes 3 compression tights and 3 pairs of lined running shorts. All are great so long as I use my anti chafe stick.

I like CW-X. I pretty much always run in their ventilator shorts and have their capri and fulll length tights for when the weather gets cooler.

June Totals:

Mileage- 111.1 miles - I very much enjoy this number haha
Time spent running - 17:29:28

Got what I believe is a 5k PR last weekend (I haven't done many all-out 5ks recently so I'm not 100% sure) 21:51 and took 2nd female overall! Not bad for the 85+ degrees plus humidity it was that day.

Under Armor are my favorite compression shorts to wear under my running shorts, but they can be pricey. If you have an Academy nearby, try their house brand BCG. They are decent for the price.

June Running:

Total distance: 106.67 mi
Average pace: 11:23/mi

Nothing to note, just trying to build up some speed with a recycled DopeyBadger 10k plan before starting WDW marathon training in the fall. Strength training has not been as consistent as I'd like, as usual.

June 2025 totals
Distance: 83km (52mi)
Average pace: 7m13s/km (11:35min/mi)
YTD: 907km on 2025km

This entire month ended up being a recovery from a knee pain. Once irritated, it does not go away fast! Multiple PT sessions and the series of follow-up exercises are making us confident that I will be able to go back to running normally. My main goal is to be able to enjoy our vacations when they come. One step and one stretch at a time.

Meanwhile everyone else in the family is happily running! 😂 the number of new shoes per year!

I skipped last month's update because I've been so frustrated, disappointed and depressed with my running and (lack of) progress. I've never had a muscular injury linger and take so long to heal as this hamstring has. I've been back to running a while now, but kept having nagging discomfort, when I had a thought about what might be going on and ran an experiment to confirm it.

I'd been using run/walk intervals to slowly build back my fitness, but it struck me that the continual transitions between running and walking were actually increasing the strain on my hamstring through the braking and accelerating processes rather than providing a beneficial effect. I ran a few easy runs without intervals and the hamstring discomfort went away! But hoo boy, am I out of shape.

I'll be honest, the combination of weight picked up during the recovery process, how far out of shape I've fallen and the effort it's taking trying to ramp up my efforts in T+Ds almost entirely in the 155-170 range have had me thinking about giving running up entirely. There's just no joy in it right now. What has been a major stress reliever and escape from work stresses has become just another source of stress.

But here I am, trying to stick through it and hold myself accountable by posting my numbers for the month. I'm about 700 miles below where I should be for the year. Hopefully a corner has been turned and I can start ramping back towards my normal volume in July, but I desperately need a cool snap. Here's what I got done in June:

June Training
Running: 64.55 miles
Avg Pace: I can't bring myself to look
Avg HR: All available BPM
YTD Running: 216.78 miles
Walking: 22.55 miles

Thank you for coming to my self-pity party. I know many of you have had (and still have) it worse than I do. I'll work on being more positive in July.

June Miles = 69

As I predicted at the end of May, my 100 mile per month streak, which stood at 87 straight months of running at least 100 miles, is over. I decided not to run on our two week anniversary trip to Europe which included a 7 night Mediterranean cruise. I did this because mainly I didn’t want deal with running on this particular trip, but also because I felt I needed a break to kinda rest and reset my body for my upcoming training for the Hartford Marathon in October and then Dopey in January.

Time to start a new streak and hopefully I can stay healthy enough for the next 7+ years to break the old record.

May Miles = 111
April Miles = 113
March Miles = 122
February Miles = 105
January Miles = 105

2025 Total = 625

I have a two pair of Walaco tights, one 6" and the other 8". I'll wear them for anything above a 10k. They hold up well, dont slip when running, have all the pockets you'd need and a water proof pocket for your phone. They are kinda pricey but are currently running a 15% off sale. The only negative is the color selection is limited. You have four colors to choose from.

Nike Lava Loops are another popular option.
