The Running Thread --2025

ATTQOTD: also strength training. I just don't enjoy it that much. A long long time ago, my partner and I did p90x together and I enjoyed that for the time together but doing it alone is so very boring. I'm sure a lot of folks say that about running 😅.

I did my first strength training in several months yesterday and OW. No wonder my hip has been giving my grief. This was all simple body weight stuff too.

ATTQOTD: I really want to answer this with a cute, comical reply, because the truth is I can’t think of ANYTHING I could realistically change. If I had more hours in the day, or didn’t need to work full-time, or could afford more and better medical care - yeah, I could do all kinds of things, probably! But working within the realm of reality? I think I’m doing all I can.

ATTQOTD: I'd be better off if I took care of my weekday runs early in the morning. As it stands I do them at night, which means I'm less enthusiastic about it since it interferes with anything else I might want to do. Obviously these are the runs I sometimes end up skipping as a result.

ATTQOTD: Covid made soft drinks all taste bad, so I quit them cold turkey 4 years ago. I've managed to cut waaaaay down on sweets and carbs, but could still stand to be better. (I can attest to the fact that weaning off of them cuts down on the cravings for carbs and sweets). I'd really like to be 15 lb lighter (or more) by MW 2026, but the body is fighting me hard on that. And like so many others, I need to be more diligent on mixing in strength training. That is a mixed bag in that I could use the strength training, but if I do much of it, I have some ugly joint pain. This getting older thing is rough sometimes....

ATTQOTD: I’m sure there’s plenty I could do to improve my running: eat better, sleep longer, stretch more, strength train more, run more days per week, etc etc. But as a hobbyist there’s only so much I’m willing to do to improve. I don’t drink much soda, and I’m not willing to cut out my 1-2 cans of Coke per day. Nor am I willing to cut out snacks I enjoy. But I do try to eat enough protein and make sure I’m fueled well for runs. I would love to get more sleep but work and a kid prohibit that!

The one thing I am trying to incorporate now is strength training. I’m doing 3 times per week about 20-30 minutes at home, which isn’t a lot but fits in with my schedule and I watch TV while doing it so hopefully the habit will stick. It better help, because I hate it! lol.
I echo all of this! LOL… it better help because it is hard sticking to it

A friend and former co-worker who is the retired head football coach/athletic director, and strength training instructor at our high school holds a free exercise class at our church gym twice a week. We do a mixture of legs, arms, and core strength training and yoga type stretching exercises using weights and mats. It is much easier to exercise when the class time is set and friends are expecting you to be there. I mostly need to exercise portion control and cut back on my sweet tea at every meal more than anything.

ATTQOTD : Consistency for me. I am working on that just now but if I can apply that to an 2 areas it will make a huge impact. Execution of training plan and Nutrition
