The Running Thread --2025

Is this the one where the race starts when the race director lights a cigarette? And something about collecting pages from a book as you go? That absolutely fascinates me
It is indeeed. They use the book pages to prove runners went to all the checkpoints on the course. I think it was posted earlier, but if you're interested, there's a great doucmentary called The Barkleys Marathons: The Race That Eats its Young that you can find. A great watch.

There's a few good documentaries. The Race That Eats is Young was the one that really popularized the race. I've also watched #17 - To Finish the Barkley Marathons which is from Karel Sabbe, Where Dreams Go to Die which focuses on Gary Robbins (whose loss was GRUELING), and the newest one, The Edge of Possible, which focuses on Harvey Lewis to start but shows all the finishers from the 2024 races. Gary Robbins also has all the finishes from 2024 on his YouTube channel.

Beginner question - I thought they had 12 hours per loop? Why is he continuing?
Found on Bluesky:
Loop 1 cutoff is 13:20
Loop 2 cutoff is 26:40
Loop 3 cutoff is 40:00 for the fun run or 36:00 if you want to continue
Loop 4 cutoff is 48:00
Loop 5 cutoff is 60:00
So the cutoffs change pace halfway through, but there is only one cutoff per loop except the third

Current status!

Tomo (On loop 3 - FunRun)
John Kelly (On loop 3 - FunRun)
Seb Raichon (On loop 3 - FunRun)
Max Gauduin (Out of loop 3 - DNF)

Yes it is. There was a guy at Disney this year running the marathon with a fabulous Barkley costume. When I saw him early in the race, he had his cigarette.

I joined the fall while running club, first timer! Doing a threshold run and the sidewalk jumped up and grabbed me. Stupid sidewalk! Lots of bumps and scrapes, missing some skin but I was able to jog back home. So embarrassing!

Garmin took a beating but the incident detection feature actually works!

Anyone used Oiselle's Roga shorts? Sierra has a couple available for like $15/pair (regularly $65) but shorts are reeeeeally tricky for me. I would, however, like to find some that work so I'm not in leggings for every run all the time.

Mrs Space Cadet did a whole series on flowy running shorts that don't ride up. She's on IG and tiktok.

That said, I've never found a pair of flowy running shorts I like, so I just stick to skorts and bike shorts.

I used to but then they changed the cut. The shorts rode up in the front 😫. If I go with shorts on a run I’m now wearing Lululemon hotty hot shorts with 4” in seam.
