The Running Thread--2024

ATTQOTD: First snowfall is typically end of October or beginning of November. The last is in April. It really accumulates and stays on the ground from January to March. I do like the various seasons and I run during all of them. I also like escaping some of them and find some warm sun 😎

ATTQOTD: I live in the midwest, so we get <0F temps and snow every winter, but who knows when that will come. It seems like lately Jan/Feb have been our super cold months. We can get snow in October, but this month has been pretty mild. We really need moisture where I live for the farm ground, so I'm actually hoping for some good snow this winter.

ETA: After marathon training in the heat and humidity this summer, I'm not sure I even want to do a fall marathon again!

Good morning, I hope everyone is well and enjoying their fall races. I am awful at staying consistent with reading the boards but I love it when I come back and see how folks are doing. I know Wine and Dine is right around the corner--wishing everyone the best race weekend ever. 💫🤗

I wanted to share a thank you post for @DopeyBadger . Yesterday, I ran the Detroit Free Press International Half Marathon on a beautiful, crisp, and sunny fall day in Michigan. I went into this particular race as trained up as I could be--consistent with hitting my mileage, a lot of hill work, the right amount of speedwork and the majority of miles done in my easy pace. It was a great training block. I had two goals for this race--a PR and more importantly, a sub-two hour finish time.

The course is spectacular--you start in Detroit at 7am (to Eminem's "Lose Yourself," which is the unofficial race anthem), around mile 3 you go over the Ambassador Bridge to Canada (through border patrol/customs) and after a few super fun miles in Windsor, you have the underwater mile coming back to the US. It's pretty darn amazing.

I was being paced by a great friend who runs with my running club and I was holding steady for the first 10 miles but as I approached the last 5k, it was starting to get really tough and I knew that I had to dig pretty deep to keep my pace up. I thought about all the people in my life who supported me and all the nuggets of information that @DopeyBadger has provided over the years about how to mentally work through the space when it gets hard.

I crossed (just barely, more like collapsed? 🤣 🤪) the finish line in 1:58:30 (which was a 3 and a half minute PR). After chasing this goal for THREE years, I was shocked, thrilled, and light headed at the same time. I needed 20 minutes in the medical tent before I could stand up straight but I recovered just fine. Running is the most amazing and yet heart-breaking journey. I turn 50 next month and to be able to do this brings me immense joy.

DH and I have been doing RunDisney races since 2016 (usually princess or marathon weekend) and we love it. But I am hoping now, when we go to run Princess weekend in 2026, I will finally be able to join him in Corral A without making him drop back to join me. I apologize if that sounds like such a frivolous thing -- it's not meant to-- only to share that some things are worth waiting for. 💜

Wishing you all best in the upcoming RunDisney season!
Congratulations on the Sub 2 and PR

QOTD time: How long do you have from when the weather starts cooling down till your first runs with snow?
ATTQOTD: Ooh, good question. It kinda depends. We haven't really started cooling down much lately (we've had a few cooler days but then gone back to the 70s) but some years we get snow starting in November so it shouldn't be too long.

I’ll see your “riding a ride during a run” and raise you “doing my civic duty during a run” I had 3 miles on the schedule today and my City Hall/polling place is only a little more than 1.5 miles away, so I combined items on my to-do list 🫡🇺🇸

All my American friends, please remember to vote!!View attachment 906968
I used to do a run/vote combo every year! Haven't done it the last few years for various reasons and I don't think it will work this year with my work timing (I might have to go straight from the polls to the office) but it's a fun combo.

Went in with a singular goal break 2 hours. Didn’t matter by how much I just wanted that one.

Had everything that wasn’t my watch and phone to just not cooperate today. Camera wouldn’t charge. Helmet no longer connects to Bluetooth. First time in a long time I’ve raced without any kind of music. Tried to play it on my phone. Which stopped after a mile or two for some reason.

It was hot, humid. And even with driving the course I had missed just how much of the out and back was uphill. There are portions of that that look flat or downhill actually aren’t in a deceptive manner.

Started the morning with an episode of my mystery disorder deciding to flare right out the gate. Thankfully didn’t impact my arms. But if I had still been ambulatory this would have quickly turned into a DNS.

Glad I have my cycle.

Also this ended up being almost a 23 minute PR off the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon last month. After having two allergic reactions and four migraines in between this feels unbelievable.

Also in other news Top End gave the green light 🎉🥳. Got to finish the grants paperwork but I will be getting my chair through them this next time.

Yesterday I completed my first week of half marathon training (yay!) and also probably messed up at least the next week of training. I went to a 5k yesterday, and prior to the race I had a tutu related incident, and have sprained my ankle. So guess I’m not gonna do much running this week 🙁
Kudos on the half training, but *very* curious about the story behind a tutu incident. Sounds like a new twist on wardrobe malfunctions…

I PR’d the half marathon yesterday! 2:43:21. This was 6 min and 35 seconds faster than my previous PR— the wine & dine half in 2023. And my first non-Disney half since 2019 (I finished that half in 3:57:07… I have come a long way!). I ran 90:30 intervals the whole time.

I actually didn’t feel great for most of the race, but a PR is a PR!

Woo hoo!

Yes! I actually kind of like the timing of the WDW Marathon. A lot of fall running and usually not a ton of snow and ice to deal with yet. The only downside is the heavy mileage in December which is a super busy month!

100% this! I live in Buffalo and can usually get through most of my long runs outside. I might need to juggle them to avoid bad weather, but I can get them in. The one year that I did Princess, soooo many of my long runs were done on the track (including my 14 miler at 9.5 laps per mile) and I hated it! Thankfully, coming off Dopey this year, I have only one long run (14 miles) between that and Princess.
