The Running Thread--2024

September was a good, solid month of training. I hit my training peak just as the month ended and am now headed into the taper for my October 12th race, the Cape Fear 24 Hour Challenge. There were a couple of missed runs due to heavy rain during the month, but overall I'm happy with where I am heading into the race. Here are the numbers from the month:

September Training Summary
Running Miles: 179.74
Running Time: 32:48:52
Average Pace: 0:10:55/mile
YTD Mileage: 1,306.76 mi

Other
Walking Miles: 16.03
Rolling 12mo Miles: 1,578.11 mi

September Training Summary
Running Miles: 105.8
Running Time: 16:53:20
Average pace: 9:34 min/mile

I'm vaugely training for a half marathon, but don't have one on the books as of now. My goal had been to try a half marathon training program, which would end at the end of October. It doesn't look like I'll have a perfect race for then, but I've been happy with the training and will just keep things up / recalibrate for when I do find a race. I've been following the ******* bots to get into some of the early RD halfs.

One of my last long runs of the month was supposed to be 12 miles while I was visiting family in the Northeast. Compared to my training in Texas it was 20 degrees cooler and felt AMAZING. I kept my easy long run pace but extended to 13.1 miles, representing my first half marathon distance, albeit not in race conditions. I was happy to demonstrate to myself that I could physically run this distance. This would not have been true 4 months ago.

I finished the month by getting sick on the 28th and missing what would have been my last scheduled long run, and still haven't restarted (maybe this evening, 3 runs missed so far.) This represents my longest split from my training plan yet. I'm confident it's the right choice but am nervous / curious to see what the first run back feels like.

September Total:

28.5 miles
Time: IDK don’t feel like doing the math

Having an allergic reaction followed by getting sick with possibly two different things. Pretty much squashed most of my September.

Anyone ever had a race that seems to have scrubbed themselves from the internet? I went to declare my intent for Grandmas. And wanted to double check my half time. And the site is nowhere.

I eventually got a copy of the result thanks to the woman in charge of Grandmas still having the link. But it’s just gone. I can’t find the webpage or anything else (Vintage Park 1/2 in Houston)

Also the lady who’s in charge asked me about my technical DNS for Grandmas. Because I did start but was late (so from their end it looks like a complete DNS, not a start and got swept) because trying to do a full only 3 weeks after having had pnuemonia was a dumb idea. But I had done it before so I thought it was doable. Which lead to problems getting from the drop off to the start (mile uphill for us).

To say the least I’m leaving the drop off way earlier this coming year. And I’m doing the challenge this time. I didn’t know if we were allowed to do the 5k last year. But found out during the weekend we can. So in for the 5k and the full.

Might also have a new chair by then. It’s the time for CAF grants and I’m up for new equipment. And so I’m applying to hopefully get some coverage for it. And maybe more than last time ( 🤞 ). Since they tend to be willing to give more to non first timers (which I was in 2021).

We find out if we got the grants and how much it’s for in end of March. I’m heading out for Springtime and as long as I get the thumbs up when I visit Top End in 3 weeks to make sure they can comfortably make me my own chair (I’m losing weight but I’m still a wide body racer. Which presents its own challenges) and I’m not heading back to Eagle (nothing wrong with them tbc! I just want to use Top End.). Then I’ll be stopping in Tampa on either the way from Orlando or to there for any last minute measurement adjustments and to place the order.

It can take around two months to do so I’m hoping with that lead I can get it in early June.

A beautiful day for a race in the Twin Cities! Had a fantastic race today, so much fun. My A goal was to have fun and my very loose B goal was under 1:55 and I made it in 1:53:44! It was really great running without a hard goal, amazing what nursing a niggle/injury can do to put things in perspective. This was probably my favorite non Disney race yet.

Congratulations on meeting your goals and finding a favourite non Disney race 😃👍

Has anyone else seen the AI notes that Strava has started to incorporate? They're...not very good 🤣

Mostly they're just sort of fluff, like little pats on the back, but here's what it said about my absolute garbage workout last week:

3 interval sessions at a fast pace despite being slower than my recent runs? What does that even mean?? And my effort was high because I felt like crap, not because it was a good workout.

Anyway, what I'm getting from this feature so far is that it's meant to make us feel better about ourselves rather than providing any particular training value 🤪 Unless someone has a more useful experience!

This is what I got for my race today. Less ridiculous than yours, but still not particularly useful

I definitely found it a little fluffy. But it echoed my feelings about my run today. So I’m glad my feeling wasn’t too far off, especially since I went out relatively fast for me still technically recovering from an injury.

I don’t have Strava but my Apple Watch has told me on multiple occasions that if I get in a workout today I’ll close my exercise ring. I get that shortly after completing a workout and closing my exercise ring. :rotfl2:
