The Running Thread--2024

I sometimes really hate our crazy Florida weather. On my run this morning, which was supposed to be an EASY five mile run (10:00-10:15) with strides, I ran through what felt like a torrential downpour. Mind you, I diligently check the weather on Accuweather before heading out to avoid this type of situation and the forecast was for "light rain." I can handle light rain. It even feels nice when you're running. However, the first thing that went wrong was a bright flash of lightning when I was one mile away from home. I immediately turned around and headed back when the skies opened up and I felt like I was running in a freaking monsoon. At this point, my easy run turned into a tempo session with me just trying to haul a$$ back home ASAP.

It really is so unpredictable! Glad you turned around and stayed safe. I was in he parks on Sunday and though we expected a pop up, we got a deluge with lightning and thunder literally on top of us for more than an hour. It was downright scary!

While we are on the gear-talk....

I'm going to be in the market for some new leggings (cropped/capri) for the marathon. My go-to UA leggings have been changed from a side pocket to the dumb, tiny, un-useable back-of-the-waistband pocket, so I'm trying to branch out. (RIP to my budget since I would stalk for clearance pricing plus an extra 30-50% off to buy my UA stuff. The idea of spending $100 on leggings makes me wanna throw up a little.)

Must have:
-side drop-in pockets that will fit a phone
-drawstring in the waist
-NO zippers
-high waist preferred
-none of the "peached" or "buttery" fabric stuff. it's gotta be slippery

Old Navy powersoft leggings do not work, and that's also the fabric texture I want to avoid.

Can anyone comment on Athleta stuff? it appears to tick a lot of the boxes, but I'm unsure of the fabric.

I can absolutely vouch for Athleta! I have a collection of various capris and tights from them that are all superb and last forever. Just find the ones that have the pockets and fabric type/weight you need and you’ll be solid for years.

I’m also a huge fan of CRZ YOGA brand bottoms from Amazon. The capris I have from them are that buttery fabric, but it does not stick like brushed fabric I’ve had before - totally the equal of any shiny tights I’ve had in terms of slip. Worth checking out.

My nearest Athleta is a tiny "boutique" style store, and it's 2.5 hours away. Can you tell me if the fabric on their "interval" line is the slippery stuff?

If it doesn't have a drawstring, they will ride down on me because of my hip-to-waist ratio. And that rules out a lot of brands.

Not budget option, but I really like the Lululemon Wunder and Align shorts/leggings. It has all of your must haves. Now that I know my size, I only buy it from the we made too much section to save some $$

I don’t have any of those so I can’t say for sure, but looking at pictures in the various colors and reading some of the reviews, I think they’re likely to be slippery without a high sheen - I have some shorts like that: they’re definitely smooth and slippery, but don’t cause flare with a camera flash, if that makes sense!

My CRZ YOGA shorts do have a drawstring, so some of their leggings might, too, though the ones I have do not. That said I also have a problem with waistbands riding down and these truly do not budge. They are a high-waist variety, though.

Garmin question - I never connected my headphones to my Garmin, but now all of a sudden, it's giving me audio cues during my workout runs. How do I make it stop? I've looked through the app, and I cannot figure out what setting I need to change.

I don't know 100% sure about leggings, but I absolutely love Athleta shorts in the biker style: side pockets as well as that waistband pocket. They are pricey though, and I discovered shorts at Target this summer, that are almost exactly the same, fit great, but they are like half the price.

I bought 2 pair and keep coming back to get more colors. So you might want to try their leggings in the same brand. Anybody who likes Athleta bike shorts, I can't recommend these shorts enough.

2 things that don't meet your requirements on the shorts:
I don't remember if they have a drawstring but they are high waisted and have a defined waist.
There is a tiny key-sized pocket on the waistband with a zipper, but you don't have to use that pocket if you don't want so maybe you can just ignore that zipper is there.

I'm a huge Athleta fan. I run in their shorts and tights almost exclusively. To me, they are well worth the cost because they fit so well (no chafing), they last for years, and the pockets!! I'm particularly fond of the Salutation Stash shorts, the Rainier tights, and the PolarTec Altitude fleece tights for super cold temps.

I have had several different styles of Athleta leggings over the years and I do like them, but the pockets vary a lot between styles. I absolutely LOVE the fit of the Rainier High Rise Leggings. The pockets are huge but awkward to get things in and out of. The zippers are along the side seam (and nicely flush) but to get my phone in and out I have to put it in sideways and kind of turn it, which is tricky to do while moving. The leggings made for yoga tend to have the better pockets, imho.

Agreed -- nothing beats my lululemon Aligns. I have one pair and they are the ones I ALWAYS reach for.

They're expensive, but I love Janji shorts. I don't think they have capris, though.

I have an Audio Prompts in my watch settings on the app where this can be disabled.

When I got my new watch, I couldn't turn it off fast enough 🤣

Also a big fan of janji. They do have a 7/8 tight but I'm guessing that's longer than what @Herding_Cats is looking for.

I will second (or is it third by now) being a big fan of Janji. I personally wear their men's 8" trail half tights which have enough pockets for me to store enough gels and electrolytes for a marathon AND my phone as well. Moreover, they are very comfortable.

I messed around with the app some more and I *think* I might have found it. It's weird, since I've had this watch since last year, and it's literally never been an issue before, and like I said, my headphones aren't even connected to the watch. Not sure if it was a recent app update?

Those side sip pockets on the Raniers are the bane of my winter running existence. Fortunately I only have a few days a year I need to use them, but if it was a regular thing I’d have to find some other cold weather tight because of those stupid pockets. Who at Athleta tested that out and green-lit it?!

Seriously! And yes, they are technically lined cold weather tights, but I don't find them to be very warm. Here in Vermont I can pretty much wear them from mid-August through mid-June.

I’m in FL - they get pulled out for temps around 45-55 and sunny… IOW “winter” lol! (I do have a pair of warmer tights for the rare times it’s 40 or less and dark.)
