The Running Thread - 2021

March 2021 totals
From Abitibi River to Otter Rapids
Distance: 222.7km (138mi)
Average pace: 6m33s/km (10:35/mi)
YTD: 530km on 2021km

Weather wise, we got an incredible month. Despite some shuffling around due to Spring break and other derailing incentives, I pretty much completed the plan. That means that I beat my biggest monthly running volume by 10%. Quite pleased.

The bummer, as coach said, is yesterday’s announcement that in person races have been canceled around here until end of June. Oh well, I think that I would attempt an Outer Banks 100k tomorrow if there was one available, it would hurt but yet feel so good.

Also with Spring, the long run distances increased and it was time to resume my nutrition sampling. It was berry fun to try...

Huma Gel Strawberry - Not enough to make me like the Huma Gel in general but the strawberry jam taste was ok with that grainy texture. DH eating half of it might have helped with me not getting annoyed by it.

Tailwind Tropical Buzz - That was a leftover half package, in case I had not reviewed it, it tasted artificial but not terrible.

Cliff Gel Razz - I really enjoyed it and I am glad that I got multiple samples of it with a virtual race registration last year or I would not have tried it. The raspberry taste was pleasant and the texture silky without being slimy.

Cliff Blocks Mountain Berry - Another great candy taste. I had forgotten that chews really stick in my teeth. I remembered afterwards not to put whole ones in my mouth and it was fine.

Xact Fruit2 Strawberry - Great fruit pastes. I could eat them all day. Somehow though they do not seem to give me a boost like other gels.

March totals:

95.5 miles running Even with a couple days rest after my 5k, this is the most I have run in a year.

42 miles walking: This is my daily walk with my dog, Buddy. I add this in to remind myself to enjoy these walks while I can. I just learned that my near-15 year old mutt has oral melanoma (removed), which is aggressive and metastasizing in dogs. Not sure yet his prognosis. His chest X-ray looks clear and right now he's his usual PITA, food-obsessed, dog-territorial self. But he will see a vet oncologist next week. I just want to know how much time he may have left (I mean, beyond the fact that he's 15!) I don't intend to put him through any nasty treatment. He deserves to be home stealing food off the counter rather than at the dreaded vet being scared.

I say more power to anybody who can get themselves together to run a virtual marathon. I've run a virtual half and a 15k in the past year, but summoning the juju to run a whole entire marathon on my own is beyond me.

Really, this was my biggest hurdle to decide to do it. However, I came up with two options. First, I may go up to western PA where my mother and sister are and run it on their nearly-empty paved trails - this would give me accountability and a crew. Second, I have a Garmin friend who is also doing it, so maybe we'll try to coordinate that - similarly I wonder if some of the folks here doing it will coordinate. And if anywhere near 70,000 people do sign up for the virtual, I wouldn't be surprised to see "virtual Boston" events around the country where groups run it together - I will keep my eyes open around here.

I ran 3 virtual marathons over the past year, including virtual Dopey. In my opinion and experience, virtual marathons tend to be harder than in-person marathons due to the lack of race day ambience and spectators to draw energy from.

There is only one way I'm running Boston and that is to qualify. No interest in running it with a charity or virtually. The whole mystique for me is running a fast enough time to get in.
Good for you, I guess.

They are both easier and harder. Harder because of the lack of support of all kinds, but easier because you truly get to run your own race. You just relax and do your thing.

Also, it ends at exactly 26.2 miles according to your GPS. :thumbsup2

@jmasgat sorry to hear about your pup. Hopefully he can enjoy the good life for the time he has left. Make it quality time.

I am not a fan of virtual races. it feels like i am paying for a medal and a training run. it is just not the same as a race. However to each their own. If you want to do it go for it.

On the race side though i am hoping to participate in the Peachtree Road Race. i did sign up for July 3 as I thought it might be less crowded. Plus i want to spectate for July 4. I was going to say i guess i can officially train for a 10k but before the race is a trip to GSMNP which means hiking, lots of hiking. I am more training for that.

I think BAA is hurting for revenue like most running organizations, so I will support them. I think they come up with a pretty good compromise between raising revenue and keeping the “iconic” reputation. They’ve said the medals will be different from the live and virtual. Both will still have the iconic unicorn on the medal. So I do not feel it is cheating or anything like that.

I agree they are definitely hurting for revenue like a lot of organizations. I think BAA is hoping that Boston can happen as it’s really day to day around here with what is and isn’t allowed. And I didn’t see that the medals will be different. The article that I read didn’t mention that so I agree in that case it is different.

I can see this if you go into it without a goal other than to finish or have fun. I’ve always had a target pace or time trial type goal, so I was looking at it from that standpoint. It’s definitely nice to be able to stop at 26,2 on the gps, though!

This is the most I’ve ever run in a month.

So another month has blasted by. Went tent camping 3 weekends during the month and that cut back the miles a little. I had camping in the summer months in Texas, so we try to get as many as we can during the spring and fall. We are starting to think about a RV trailer to do some more throughout the year. I usually don't run while camping, but did on the last trip. I actually need to train for a couple real life races at the end of April and early May.

Maybe I am weird, but all of my PRs are on runs by myself not in races.

Got outside for 6 runs this month, including a 10 and a 12 in anticipation of a half marathon on May 2.

I learned this month, after many years with my Forerunner 235, to wear it higher on my wrist and tighter to get a more accurate HR. Instead of showing that I'm at my max all the time (165-170), I'm recording HRs in the 130s and 140s when I'm running and feeling good. Only took me like 7 years to figure this out.

Also I ran a lot of miles this month! I'm a little mad that I didn't do 10 more to hit 100, but I haven't run this many miles in a month since November 2019, when I ran a marathon and was also training for the 2020 Disney Marathon.
