The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: My dog is 8 and has slowed down so definitely not now. I tried a few times over the years but she is half Boston terrier half some kind of bulldog and it was always the same: she wanted to sprint the first half mile, then had to stop to poop, then laid down.

Who runs with their pets? Have you seen anyone run with anything but a dog?
When I first got my now 8 year old dog I would occasionally take him running. But I didn't do it enough because it was usually just easier to go out on my own. He is so out of shape now. If I took him running now he would only last about a half a mile before I would be dragging him back to my house.

ATTQOTD: not often. My pup likes to pull a lot so I have to use two-handed leash technique with him and I don't find that comfortable for running. That and neither of us like the heat too much so I often end up on the treadmill instead....

ATTQOTD:
I used to run with my border collie mix. It was only a few months before he passed away at the age of 14 that he let me know he was done with the running thing (mind you back then I didn't run very far - only a mile or so at a time). He was an excellent running partner, and it was easy to run with him.
My current dog, a pointer mix, acts like he has all the energy in the world, but once you clip the leash on he can make it approximately 25 seconds of running before he's all "woah woah woah what is going on here, I don't run!" He's 12 now so it is understandable, but this laziness on a leash has been going on since we adopted him when he was 1 or 2.
I've considered going to the local shelter and offering to run with some of their dogs (the shelter is right next to a river walk), but a selfish part of me doesn't want to have to work on dog training during what little time I have to actually run.

Wow. Not a great end to the day here. Owen, our 9 1/2 year old English Bulldog very unexpectedly passed away this evening. He had had a great day full of mommy time and treats and was in excellent health other than his nagging bulldog allergies. DW heard him thrash around for a second like he was scratching his back and when she went to put him to bed a few minutes later, he was gone. Our best guess is a massive sudden heart attack. Rest In Peace, big guy.

Kenn, i am so sorry to see this. I was on vacation and traveling back yesterday so I was behind. I know how much Owen was loved and glad your wife was with him. We have chatted about the dogs before. I can only imagine the sadness. Hugs and peace.

ATTQOD: I used to run with mallory on the weekends. Every time i could take her running i would. I am not sure if she loved it, but she loves mommy and it was time with mommy. Plus i needed to burn the crazy out of her. She had lots of energy when she was young. She would get really excited on the weekends when I would be on my running clothes and stand at the top of the steps. She would look at me like, "are we going? Can we go now?". So i like to think she loved it. Then she got older and i would still run with her but she would do less miles. My DH would walk Yeti and then I would run with Mallory. When she was done after a few miles, then i would drop her with DH and they would all walk until I finished. We were doing a lot less miles, but she would still go run with me. Then in 2013 she started having issues walking so she has not ran since then.

Right now she is barely walking. I was on vacation, which normally is in the RV and she comes with. However this was different it was for our parents, so we went on a cruise and i needed a dog sitter. Thankfully we have some wonderful friends who did a great job. Mallory is very happy that I am home though.

As LSUlakes has yet to check in with a question of the day, I would like to move the pet discussion to running.

Who runs with their pets? Have you seen anyone run with anything but a dog?
No running for Jassie "Princess Jasmine". Just winter tennis and summer swimming.

@camaker I am so sorry for your loss! I know how hard it is to go through.

ATTQOTD: Never run with our Boston Terrier as she's just not built for it. I do short runs with our mutt. She's done up to 3 miles with me. But she is a puller even with her gentle lead harness on so I try to not do it more than once a week or I feel it in my knees. And she also likes to poop during the first 10 minutes and then I'm stuck carrying a bag of poop for the rest of the run so theres that too.

ATTQOTD: DH runs with our twins in the Thule Twin jogging pram. Does that count?

@LSUlakes, would you please add these races for me? Thank you.

Sep 15 - Mumof4mice - Sri Chinmoy Yarra Blvd 10k (1:04 / N/A)
October 13 - Mumof4mice - Melbourne Marathon 10k (NG / N/A)
January 10 - Mumof4mice - Walt Disney World 10k (1:00 / N/A)

Rather optimistic goal of Couch to 60min 10k. But I like having a challenging goal for the motivation. And I have a personalised training plan now, many thanks to @DopeyBadger!

ATTQOTD:

I used to take McFly running with me when he was younger, but I worried about his joints and his pads since it's mostly sidewalk. He's an 80-lb Irish Setter and quite strong so when he got an idea to go somewhere or duck in front of me and i wasn't expecting it we nearly had some spectacular crashes. Those two factors made me decide that he wasn't the ideal running buddy. We run once around the block ~.4 miles when I'm done with my run now; but it's better for him in the backyard in the grass where he can really stretch his legs (he's obviously much faster than I am).

Sorry for your loss @camaker

@camaker I am so sorry for your loss! Owen was a sweet pup and I enjoyed hanging out with him at the 50 miler. Please give your wife my condolences as well.

ATTQOTD: Well I don’t have any dogs anymore and I think I’ve shared 100 times about the one race we all did together. We got our Lhasa when he was 12-14 years old and we had to train him to walk on a leash, so no running. Simon the schnauzer would run on his own terms. We would do long walks several times a week and do quarter mile jogs throughout the walk, but nothing too crazy.

ATYQOTD: I have 3 dogs. Dog 1, Poppy, a hound mix, was a rescue who is still skittish after 3 years and absolutely freaks out if you try to put a leash on him. He is 50+ lbs, can jump our fence and spends his days running alongside cars in our front yard. Dog 2, Miss Posey is our Prima Donna Beagle, the only one who is not a rescue, who loves long walks where she can stop every 2 seconds and sniff every scent, so no running for her. And dog 3, Daisy, also a rescue, would probably be a good dog to run with. She is a mixed breed (unknown) who LOVES to run but we are still working on her leash skills. So I only run with her when she escapes and I am trying to catch her.

Traveled three days for work this week to Charlotte, NC so I've got some catching up to do...

@camaker I am so sorry for your loss. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.

Running Movies: I don't think I've ever actually seen a movie about running, unless you count Forrest Gump. I had never heard of Brittany Runs Marathons, but it does look interesting so I may watch it. Not sure I will spend the money to see it in theatres though. I still need to see Toy Story 4 and Lion King will be out soon too! Squeal!

Summer Runs: It feels like it has been summer here since April, but they are going pretty well. I am not currently training for a longer distance, so I think that is helping with my comfort level. I need to figure out fall plans though, so that may all change soon.

Running with Animals: Barkley, our 1.5 year old Golden Retriever, has been on a few runs with me, but it is really too hot here in the summer for him to run. We do go on a walk every night for at least two miles, so he has some significant mileage from that and seems to love it. I have one of those waist belts that connects to his leash for running and love it. I am hoping to run his first official race sometime this fall and praying that he doesn't get so excited about all the people that he drags me the whole way.

ATTQOTD: We just got our dog in April. He is a terrier mix and he loves to try to escape our house. He is extremely quick and I’ve somehow managed to catch him only because he saw a squirrel or rabbit to distract him. Once it cools off, I’d like to take him on a short run just to see how he would do.

@camaker - I am so sorry about your dog! One of my dogs fell over and died while I was walking him a few years ago. We assume it was a heart attack as well. I know that was hard for your wife to find him like that.

Fun Friday QOTD: What is a strange food item you eat or combination of foods you eat that most people think is strange?

ATTQOTD: Funyuns dipped into Coke... SO good, but not something I have done it a looonnnggg time! I am sure there are plenty of things I eat locally that most may find strange but locally its fairly normal.
