The Running Thread - 2019

Wow. Not a great end to the day here. Owen, our 9 1/2 year old English Bulldog very unexpectedly passed away this evening. He had had a great day full of mommy time and treats and was in excellent health other than his nagging bulldog allergies. DW heard him thrash around for a second like he was scratching his back and when she went to put him to bed a few minutes later, he was gone. Our best guess is a massive sudden heart attack. Rest In Peace, big guy.

I’m so sorry! He was such a cutie!

As LSUlakes has yet to check in with a question of the day, I would like to move the pet discussion to running.

Who runs with their pets? Have you seen anyone run with anything but a dog?

I don't run with my dogs yet, but we got our new puppy partly as a running partner for me when he is grown. He is a yellow lab and only 11 weeks, so it is at least another year before he can get out on the trail for a mile or two.

ATTQOTD: Sometimes I take my dog running with me, but I did not start until she was well over a year old, since it's not good for growing joints. She's actually really good at knowing she's doing a job and doesn't stop or anything.

Gantu will be our distance running buddy once he is two and thus fully grown. He sticks to around a mile with us right now about once a week. He stays pretty focused on us and at our paces unless he needs to poop which puts him in a dead stop and can trip us up so now we make sure he’s gone before the run. His first 5k will be next January. We hope to try for his Endurance Trial title at the Rhodesian ClubNationals in November 2020 which is a 12 mile run done in 4 mile segments with obediance and medical checks at each segment. It’s in Texas that year so at least our climate is good for training there!

Our other Rhodesian probably won’t be our running buddy since she’ll be more confirmation and performance sports focused. We’ll see how it goes.

Our cocker spaniel did a 5k with me once a few years ago but that was a disaster as any time we ran, he jumped on my legs since we never probably trained him. So we walked it and he refused water at every station.

Thank you everyone for your condolences and kind words. They are much appreciated! We're still in shock at how sudden and unexpected it was.

ATTQOTD: Run? With a bulldog? I think not! In all seriousness, Owen's range was about a mile. After that, he would lay down in the grass and refuse to budge until he felt he was rested enough to continue. I made the mistake of pushing that envelope with him (just walking) one time and ended up having to carry a 60 lb dog a half mile home because he had had enough! Short walks were his social media time, though, and he enjoyed updating his status on every bush or pile of cut grass we came across.

I don't think I would particularly like running with a dog. I tend to zone out and get lost in my own world while I'm running and having to pay attention to a dog in addition to myself would break that immersion.

Attqotd: I tried to run with him this winter, but he is very territorial, and even with the muzzle he was too much to deal with especially with all the off the leash dogs, who are often problematic without my dog.
