The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: I *think* winter is finally leaving us. It has been 52* the past two mornings at 6am so I have been running in shorts and a tank. The high for today is 76* but it's supposed to dip under 70 this weekend and gives us a little more rain, then we are smooth sailing to the 80s after that. I am ready for that warmer weather! Gimme that 120* summer heat I love.

ATTQOTD: Ready for warmer weather and no more rain! I shouldn't complain though cause its not like I deal with snow or "real" winter. I just don't like cold. And California needs the water but I avoid running in it if I can.

QOTD: Who is looking forward to warmer weather or wishing for it to stay cool/cold for a bit longer?

ATTQOTD: We had what is likely our last freeze of the year last night. I for one would like it to stay cold as long as possible because summer sucks! The truth of the matter though, is it is going to start getting warm by the weekend and our days with the morning low in the 50's is about to be done until late October / November. :(

I'm with @LSUlakes on this one. While I'm not too thrilled with it being 27 this morning, I don't want to see it get hot and humid too quickly either. By the weekend, the lows are going to be in the 60s for the foreseeable future. Ugh.

We have a high of 18 today and a "feels like" of -1. I wouldn't mind a bit warmer and while I really do enjoy summer and the heat it brings I'm in no hurry to get there. Give me consistent 40's and I'll be happy for a while.

ATTQOTD: not looking forward to summer. Last year was just so miserable here in central FL. Hopefully I have a treadmill by the time I can run again.

I just had to turn on the pool heater so I can use it for pool running. It’s 51 degrees and my pool is 77. I’m not getting in that.

I grew up in the South, so I get it. Those in the South do not experience winter. You experience summer, and not summer. You are currently in the "not summer" phase, so I can understand your desire for this weather to continue. For me, still dealing with real winter (it was 11 degrees when I ran this morning, in March) - I look forward to whatever comes next, as long it isn't more of this. ::yes::

ATTQOTD: Not looking forward to the heat at all. Spring weather will be here for maybe two weeks then its going to be super hot until October.

Last weekend it was in the upper 30s for my long run. While that’s a tad on the chilly side I much prefer it to the heat and hummidity that I know is coming.

QOTD: Who is looking forward to warmer weather or wishing for it to stay cool/cold for a bit longer?
ATTQOTD: I always prefer warm/hot over cold so, count me as looking forward to warmer weather. It has not been too bad here in CT with most days having high temps above freezing and I have rather enjoyed running outside more than usual this winter. Even when we get snow like yesterday's 8"-10" of snow, the sun has been warm enough to at least melt the roads and keep me running outside. The rest of this week looks cold with highs in the 20's but the extended 15 day forecast looks like temps in the mid 40's starting this weekend. My hope is that after this week, I can put my running hats and gloves away until next winter.

ATTQOTD (yesterday): No celebrations here.

ATTQOTD (today): I am ready for warmer weather or at least not this bipolar weather we have had lately. Last week it was in the 70s and nice, then Sunday we had some of the worst tornadoes in history for our state. I live about 5 miles from where the EF-4 tornado hit and took 23 lives (possibly more) and I am just very thankful that we were spared. If y'all could send some good thoughts and prayers my community's way we'd appreciate it...the last few days have been tough to say the least. Then last night we had snow flurries and it is back below freezing for the next two nights. I really need Mother Nature to get her act together.

We've been getting into nicer weather, although it's been a bit wet. It's a lot nicer to go out for a run when it's around 50F than, say, about 35F.

@roxymama @opusone @LdyStormy76 (Chicago area people I can think of).

I'd venture to guess there are almost no hills because it's Chicago though.

Late to the party for answering this one. I have not ran this one specifically. But based on course start it will be primarily all along the lakefront path. I'm guessing minimal incline and if you are from an area where you train with hills, even the possible short bridges or hills will be baby ones. They only seem hard for us who don't hill train much.

Have not run it, but the answer is ‘maybe’. Despite Chicago being pretty flat there are some over and under passes that result in hills. Hot Chocolate 15k, which starts in Grant Park and runs city streets south before turning north onto the lake path, had a nasty pedestrian bridge on it and a hill at Soldier Field/ Museum campus. If it runs only on the lake path the attached might be similar (it is from a run called Soldier Field 10 miler that someone posted to Strava last May).

Would be nice if races would post an approximate course map when they open registration, but they don’t.

The Hot Chocolate pedestrian turn about was exactly what I was thinking of!!!! I don't like that one at all because it has switch backs which break up steady pacing. I don't think this course would have that though.

I have not run this race, but have ran many starting from around Grant Park where this race starts. Most of the courses are along the lakefront path so, almost by definition, they are pretty flat. A few races (like the Chicago Marathon) venture into the loop or local neighborhoods where there may be some very gentile inclines, but that is not common as it is a huge hassle and expense to close down streets.

And you really should not expect that much wind; it looks to me more like the race organizers hype. Most historians agree that the nickname "The Windy City" has more to do with politicians than weather.

I like that you know that Windy City fact! People usually don't believe me when I try to tell them that is where the name comes from.

For race day, don't expect that it will be windy, but don't be surprised if it is windy. Ditka Dash was always around this time of year and we had one where the wind was so strong that my bib flapping sounded like a jet engine. It's really a toss up with Chicago weather. It can really be in your favor when it's at your back though :)

@Bree if you decide to run this one let me know. I run a half marathon the weekend before, but I can be talked into things. Likely would not be doing it for speed (because of the above.)

We had some of those tornadoes in Georgia, but fortunately it seems everyone here survived. I taught, for a time, in Talbotton, which was also hit hard. Most of the county's people live in poverty and now they've lost what little they had. Praying for all affected and especially for the families of those who died or are still missing. I couldn't believe that the same area was hit with snow flurries and freezing temps last night!

It's 35 in Houston right now. You're not missing much.

On the one hand, I'm over here desperately hoping that the forecast for 20 degrees on Saturday is accurate because it'll be so warm compared to what we've been going through (no face mask! Fewer layers! I'll probably be taking the dogs out in a t-shirt instead of putting on my coat!). On the other hand, I know it's all relative and that a (more) humid 35 is its own brand of bad.

QOTD: Who is looking forward to warmer weather or wishing for it to stay cool/cold for a bit longer?

Warmer!!!! Even when I'm able to get out for a run it's so hard to actually warm up and open my stride. Outside of running, the cold and snow has just made everything generally miserable. The streets are dangerous, everything that takes me out of the house takes a bunch of extra time because you have to put on layers and then go slow and careful, and life costs more money in winter--I have to run my car a while before I leave in the morning to get rid of the frost on the inside of the windshield (I think the vents are full of ice??) which means filling the tank more often, we're paying out the nose to heat the house and it's still cold...etc.

ATTQOTD: Weather is kind of a touchy subject around here. The last time it was even above freezing was Feb 13th. It's been a loooong stretch of bitter cold and it just seems like everyone is kind of moody because of it. Needless to say, I'm ready for a warm up!

Same boat, pretty much. We're supposed to get up above freezing once or twice in the next ten days, but tbh that scares me in a whole new way with how much snow we've got around town. At this point it's either going to be a slow series of thaws that leaves everything icy for weeks on end, or it'll be a sudden thaw that could lead to a flood. We're at the point where the businesses that can afford it are having the snow from their parking lots hauled out of town and dumped in a field because otherwise they've got 8+ foot high snow mounds where it's been plowed into corners.

I’ll probably make the decision in August. There’s also a flat half marathon in New Hampshire I am looking at too. I am in FL so I don’t have hills and I’m that weirdo who looks forward to the ramps during Disney races.
