The Running Thread - 2016

Interesting! It's on my to-do list to run all seven continents (like a far-out, probably never happen bucket list item). So it's good to know I'll be better than prepared being from Wisconsin.

I need to knock out Australia or New Zealand in the next year or two so I can use my spot on the South America/Antarctica trip.

I'm experiencing my first injury that is actually preventing me from running since I started last February. It's DRIVING ME CRAZY! Just a little pull (hopefully not tear) in a tendon in my top outer hip area, but I've had to skip my Tempo run yesterday and am pushing my 8 mile long run tomorrow to Monday at least. It feels okay just hanging out, but has progressed from a little soreness after a run to pain from about a half mile in. I went to my regular strength training session yesterday and my trainer was a great help with advice (RICE, Advil & strategic stretching in the right spots). I had already suspected I was going to have to lay off some.

Sure, I've had plenty of times where I blew off running or was too busy and didn't train a session or two, but this is different. I WANT to and I'm starting to panic that I'm going to get behind in my training (I know I'm not yet). I keep telling myself I'll get way MORE behind if I keep pushing it and prolong the injury or make it worse. BUT IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!

Did my 12 miler - very heavy snow and no plows. This was the most miserable run that I can remember. I don't mind cold or snow, but deep snow is really hard to run in. And I had to run in the streets around my neighborhood because other areas simply were not safe, and the route that I ran was all hills. Again, normally I don't mind the hills, but running hills in deep snow is HARD.

Well, it is over with. My last long run tomorrow, then the taper. :upsidedow

Congrats to all of you doing these runs in brutal conditions!! It's 3 degrees here with light snow and wind chill of -11. Since we knew it was coming we moved our 10 miler to Friday before work and did the 20 miler yesterday before the brutal cold hit. So glad we did that. And now it's taper time!! Let the madness ensue.

Just finished my final run for the Dopey simulation. Left at 5:30 this morning as the family is getting ready to go see Santa and I had to be back and ready to go. So it was a dark and COLD run. All the snow that fell on Friday night and yesterday was hard and crisp. Yesterday was like running in deep sand, this morning it was wonderful - despite freezing! I stopped at one point to pull out my water bottle, completely frozen! The other one was as well! Later my phone shut down because of the cold, just as I was trying to play some Red Hot Chili Peppers. So had to finish the run listening to the crunching snow under my feet, which wasn't that bad actually.

So psyched! Going to see Santa and now, bring on the taper. All you out there running in this crazy weather be safe and have fun!

My better half (my wife) has made the decision that it's too cold to run outside (Wind chill of -29) for 2.5 hours. So tomorrow I'll take a short day at work and finish up the last long run. Good luck everyone!
My brain can't even comprehend that! Meanwhile in Florida I'm worried about overheating since it's going to be 85 when I go out.

My wife made the same decision for me. It was -24 air temp here and windchill around -40. I wish I had the time tomorrow to get it in, but looks like my last long run will be Christmas Eve.

ATTQOTD (Friday) - my longest run is officially 30.2 - yesterday. It was miserable. I went into it with my IT band still giving me grief. Last week I wasn't even able to finish a 4 miler without pain. I got a cortisone shot Thursday morning. That and lots of prayer got me to mile 18 without any pain. After that my pace dropped dramatically. The hills killed me. I actually cried during the last 5 miles, but I didn't quit. Today I go look for that 50k sticker for my car. By gosh, everyone is going to know I'm an ultamarathoner after all that pain.

Shortest run was a mile that I fit in when I was doing a 100 day run streak. I did a few of them on days which would have normally been rest days.

I think we are about to have some epic ice where we are in NH. Yesterday we had a snowstorm, very cold, never got more than about 20F and snowed maybe 5-6". Today, it got up near 50 and rained very hard, so there is water and slush everywhere because of course it's been super cold, ground is frozen, and now there's snow preventing the water from getting off the parking areas and roads. Now tomorrow it is not going to be any higher than 22F again. :( All that standing water and slush is going to freeze into terrible ice.

Same here - It was supposed to get warmer and rain more, but it didn't get warm enough or rain enough, so we are about to get sheets of ice everywhere in the Northeast.

Did my last 24 miler today in 40 degree weather and light rain. Miserable conditions for my last 2 runs. Whatever we see in Disney will be really easy after these runs.

Taper time!

I'll say congratulations again! Incredible job sticking with it through the pain. I hope you found your sticker! You deserve it!

And how abou the icy bridge? That was less than ideal.

Same here in MA! I had a very wet, slushy, puddle-filled 7 mile run today - and none of that seems to have drained away!

Thank you! That bridge cracked me up. As if running that far wasn't enough, we had to traverse an icy bridge too. I hope nobody fell. Everyone did great ahead of my group warning the people running behind.

Maybe next year we can meet up. I was in no condition to hang around long this year. And yes, no less than 24 hours later and I'm already planning next year. I can't let my only attempt at a 50k be while injured. I think that race is a great one too. They were well organized and had great volunteer support at the aid stations.

If I'm there next we will definitely have too. This one hurt pretty good so I'm still in denial mode about doing another. But good chance that won't last. :) I didn't hang around either. I was freezing. And yes on the support and aid stations. I was loving those little pb&j sandwiches! So if anyone wants to run a 50k - Seashore 50k, Virginia Beach, next December. :) :)

Roads and especially sidewalks were a sheet of ice here (DC area) on Saturday morning, so I moved my long run to Sunday instead. It was 61 degrees Sunday morning with a little rain. Whiplash?! Got 14 miles done. My longest run in 2+ years. Enjoyed getting to pull shorts out in December.
