The Running Thread - 2016

I would have been very disappointed with runtastic if I was using it for pacing on that day. If it assume correctly it probably told you that your pace was much faster than actual. Im sure you would have noticed this though as you passed the first few mile markers like the 10k and your app had you closer to 6.5 or more... maybe something like that. Good luck with the kids run too! Cant wait to get mine involved!

In fact, where it killed me was training. All along I thought I was training at a certain "pace". Come race day for a HM I lined up with the appropriate pacer and ran with them. We came in well under 30 seconds of goal pace and I was shocked but kept it up. Then mile after mile we were under "pace". By mile 5, I crashed hard because I was going way too fast for what I was physically capable of. The total mileage on that run was something like 14.2 miles. After that I decided I needed to get a Garmin as soon as it was financially feasible. The runtastic was about 5% short on mileage and got progressively worse as time passed during a run.

My longest run was 19.21 miles two weeks ago. I have a 20 mile run planned for the weekend so fingers crossed that goes well. My shortest recorded mile was a one mile run where I was trying out my new Garmin.

Running camp question - it seems like a cool idea but I would rather spend the money on races instead.

Funny story about the runner/jogger question for earlier this week. My husband and I are running a 5k with our 5 year old tomorrow morning. Its his first race ever and he is really excited. Our plans are to take it very easy with him and plenty of walk breaks if he needs them. We live very close to a local high school and have seen the cross country team running outside after school lately for their winter track practices. When he asked what they were doing, I told him they had practice after school. He immediately asks me why we haven't been practicing for our upcoming race and hasn't stopped bugging me about it. I caved last night and took him for a quick run around our neighborhood. It was really cold and he didn't stop talking the whole time. We stopped twice to walk and he then told me that he was "jogging" when we would start back up and it turned into "running" a little bit after. I asked him the difference and he said "Jogging is when you run slow and running is when you run faster." He said he learned this from his PE teacher but I think he thinks running is sprinting as fast as you can. Hopefully tomorrow's race with start a cool trend for our family!

That is fantastic! I have been running with my kids for years (they are 13,10, and 7). They have all done races and my oldest ran middle school cross country this year. My youngest kids would "train" frequently with the cross country team. Our team had a great coach and he would go out of his way to include siblings and parents--anything to get people excited about running. This past spring, my kids did a 5k three weekends in a row. They are not speed demons, but love finishing a race (especially if there is a medal or trinket at the end!). As far as they know, running and racing are normal family activities (they have watched me race countless times!).

Just be happy you don't have to play them every year while trying to run the toss dive, over, and over, and over again! But, hey we have a new OC now, maybe we will try that new things all the other schools do... what do they call it??? Oh a PASS!!!

:lmao:

ATTQOTD:
Longest recorded: 9.37 miles (2017 will be the year of double digits... even though technically I was over 10mi if I had recorded my warm-up and jaunt home)
Shortest recorded: .09 miles at 24+min per mile avg pace; when I accidentally hit start during a walk/shuffle to the start line from my corral and I hit save instead of delete.

QOTD: What do you like in a running jacket? What do you dislike? Which lines are your favorite and why?
I have an amazing Tek Gear jacket from Kohls that I got for $4 last year. I wear it with a tank or short sleeves in sub-40 temperature or with a long sleeve top in sub-20. It's like their Raglan Quarter Zip line but in full zip. It has pockets for keys and the like and the really tight sleeves and thumbholes to prevent cold air from getting in. My only complaint is the pockets don't zip and that I can't find a picture of it online.

QOTD: What is the longest and shortest recorded run that you have done? (0 does not count)
My longest is Disney Princess 1/2 which featured a ton of weaving and was recorded using Runkeeper because I didn't have my Garmin yet. It came out at 14.21 mi and may be slightly off. My shortest recorded was 0.47mi which happened when I was at practice for another event and needed a run in for that week so I just recorded what I ran during sprints.

I have a couple ideas I wanted to pass along in regards to next years running thread and on way to improve it.

1. In addition to the race list on the first page I was thinking of making a QOTD list with links on it to each QOTD as they are asked. I see this as a way to keep me honest with coming up with new ideas and also a way for anyone who is looking for information a easier way to find it within the thread.

2. Along with the QOTD / ATTQOTD would anyone be interested in including their planned workout or already completed run. For example 5 miles easy today or 7 mile tempo run, ect. OR do yall feel that info is best left for the journals? I see it as a way to see what everyone is doing training wise maybe, but again there is the strava group as well...

Let me know what yall think. Just looking for ways to improve the thread and make it more user friendly for information. Also if I could figure out how to make the race list not look like a dumpster fire on a smart phone, would be a big win. Suggestions on format perhaps?

Admins any suggestions on that?

Shortest? Maybe 40 yard dashes for football? Longest currently 17.2, have a 20 miler planned for tomorrow though.

Side note: due to my increase in treadmill running I have noticed something. I wear my apple watch while I run. It has an option for indoor running. My treadmill at home has the distance about .7 miles lower than my watch. This is an older treadmill so its not exactly the best. Now when I would run on a treadmill at school (these treadmills are quite new) my watch was about .3 lower than what the treadmill said. So my question is what should I believe?

1. Not a bad idea but that seems like a lot of work for you.

2. I like this idea, it shows everyones progress and where they are at.

ATTQOTD: Longest was 13.6 (Tink 2015). Shortest looks to be 1.2 mile shakeout run around the loop at POFQ/POR after arriving for W&D 2015. Although if we're going back all the way to high school, I used to run the 400m (very badly :)).

Longest run was 13.27 when my Garmin measured long during a half marathon. It was crowded so I'm sure it's right with the weaving. Shortest was around half a mile for a warm up before a race.

The first is totally up to you. The second - I would readily post daily run updates.

As for the QOTD - Shortest (not counting sprint drills when playing sports) - about a quarter mile. Was testing a pulled calf muscle and decided to bag a run a few years ago. Longest continuous run - 28 miles in preparation for a marathon PR effort a while back. Longest broken run - 100 miles, broken down equally over 4 days when in the Army. A number of guys were permanently injured during this idiocy.

To follow the not as yet adopted new theme: Today I ran a 7 mile easy run along a local highway. It was 7 degrees outside, and it was not fun.

You should go with the TM reading is what I am told. Always better to be a little over per the watch then short on the run. It doesn't seem like much, but a half mile here and there over the course of 5 runs a week leaves you 2.5 mile short of the plan that week and on average 10 miles a month. So it adds up. Also the mechanism in the watch isn't perfect. If it works in similar fashion as my garmin, it needs several outdoor runs to get it calculated. if you just opened the box and put it on and went run on the TM I think the difference would be a lot different as well. Also, if its like my Garmin, you really uses your last outdoor run as the main determining factor for pace / miles. It calculates your arm swings into a pace plus time with that many swings of the arm. So lets say you go run 5 miles at a goal pace of 7:30/mile. The next day its snowing 9", so the TM it is. Well the plan is a easy 3 miles, so you set the TM to a 8:45 pace. What happens (especially for the first mile) is your watch will hit mile one before the TM and will give you a mile pace of 8:00 ish lets say. To continue on, the longer the run, the more accurate it gets. Meaning, mile one will be the biggest difference you will have in real pace vs watch. Lets use our example above where you have a 45 second difference. Well mile 2 will get closer to the TM pace by a few second, and so on and so forth. The same is true for the reverse, run slow outside and do a faster pace on the TM and it will go the opposite way. Just not as much as a difference as the other way. The best way to track a TM run with a watch is to get the foot pod and calibrate it. One last point, if your pace varies on the TM, the watch doesn't always do a great job on just noticing .1 to .3 mph increase. It will show a difference just not as accurately if you are doing the run outdoors.

The statements above are based on my observations with my watch which is a Garmin 235. Not trying to say don't buy this watch, I think all of them using similar technology more than likely has the same issue. Just something to be mindful about.
Sorry about the wall of text.

1. Not a bad idea but that seems like a lot of work for you.
A few extra steps, sure. But if it can help even just one person with a problem related to running instead of just giving up, I think it worth it. I think it would be something I update on a weekly basis perhaps...

Longest 26.2+ (not sure what my actual distance was in any marathons since I didn't use anything to track), shortest maybe 200 yards in current days. I don't track all my runs so not sure, but there's been times I'll start & turn back due to the cold or some other issue.

Anything you decide for the running thread sounds great!

Burrr, at least 7 is usually a lucky number :) I did a whopping 2.5 in our 20 degree heat wave this morning, as I actually have worked out inside (not treadmill) the last 3 days due to the brutal cold & Sat & Sun will be brutal again, but next week we are getting 30s, it's like early Christmas with those temps coming! Hope you have a little warmer coming too!

ATTQOTD: Longest - 2016 Disney Marathon - 26.58 miles. My two BCS marathons came in at 26.45 and 26.38. So the tangents and character stops probably added the extra distance.

Shortest: .07 mile. The watch died 38 seconds into the race. When I turned the watch on, it gave me the low battery message. I was hoping it would last longer than it did!

QOTD: What is the longest and shortest recorded run that you have done? (0 does not count)

Longest would be about 14 miles training for the Dark Side Half this spring, hoping to go longer as I train this year for a marathon (Dopey 2018 I'm looking at you….)
Shortest measured run is 50 yards but comes with an explanation, I play the mascot for my daughter's elementary school. It is a full eagle costume (think college mascot, quality, full put on head etc...) and I wear it at events at and around the school. It is SO much fun! Anyway, this past fall "Mitch" the eagle joined the kids for the 50 yard dash. In full costume it was pretty hot but I love doing it.

Thanks! I just found it weird how one treadmill was much different than the other treadmill.

I actually was curious about this earlier this year and from my research it seems that as a treadmill gets older the belt loosens slightly. (which can be fixed with regular maintenance) Since a treadmill counts the number of rotations the belt does, a slightly looser belt can make for an inaccurate measurement. Hence why not all treadmills will give the same stats.

QOTD: What is the longest and shortest recorded run that you have done?

I did a 30-miler one Saturday, followed by a 20-miler on Sunday. I was training for an ultra with only about a month lead time. I was coming off marathon training so was still in pretty good shape.

But believe me, this was not normal for me. Normally I top out at 16 miles on the Hanson plan.

Shortest was 1 mile.
