The Running Thread - 2016

Also, I have a couple adidas with the boost midsole (which I love), and I have read that they can last a little longer, so I'll be testing that as well.

I am also currently using Adidas with Boost mids and interested to see how long the boost material lasts. Do you think we will be able to "feel" when it starts degrading like we can with normal EVA foam. It could actually be that the outsole goes before the midsole.

I've wondered the same thing! It can't last forever, so you'd think there has to be some kind of change. It may requiring a trip to the store in a pair to squeeze the midsole by hand to test for a difference. But what if it does outlast the outsole? Maybe there's an enterprising cobbler out there that could re-sole them and keep them going.

QOTD: Do you track miles on shoes or do you retire them by calendar time? What criteria do you use to retire training shoes (e.g. How many miles)? What about racing shoes? Do they still look good? What do you do with them once you already have a pair for yard work, casual use, ect.?

ATTQOTD: I track mileage on my shoes. For training shoes I try to get 375 - 400 miles on a pair. The pair of racing shoes/flats I have will go to about 200 - 250 miles. They simply just don't hold up as long, but or only used for very specific workouts or races, so time wise I will get a few months out of them. I'd also add that flats are usually cheaper than trainers from what I have observed. When they are done they usually look good, with exception to the bottom of the shoe. I keep my oldest pair for yard shoes, the second oldest for casual use. So when another pair gets retired, the yard shoes go to the trash and each pair moves a step down.

I used to have an app on my phone, but I'm terrible about keeping it up. I usually end up going by feel.

Make sure to keep an eye out for when your model of shoes gets "retired" for the newer model to come out, because they'll go on sale as places try to move inventory. I run in Brooks Adrenalines and Brooks is getting ready to release the 17 version, so all of the 16 version shoes are marked down 25% (hopefully they'll go down even further, i'm gonna keep checking both Running Warehouse and the Brooks site). I'm stocking up! :)

Yes! I'm a Brooks girl as well and I just got 2 pair. I can't wait for them to go down more. I wear a 12, and those are hard to come by. I did save $30 each though!

Seeing this post makes me want to barf, lol! I am a total basket case, a bundle of nervous energy this week. I am more nervous for this marathon than my first one. I am hoping to PR and you can revise my goal to sub 5:30. I'm secretly hoping for sub 5:15 but because I'm a nervous wreck, I'm not feeling confident enough to have you put that in writing. :crazy2:

Just run your race and give it your best effort. The results will come. Hope you have a fantastic marathon!

ATTQOTD: I used to not track shoe mileage and based it on how the shoe looked or felt. Purchased new inserts to prolong the mileage. Too embarrassed to bring up how many miles I put on my first pair of Glycerines (way north of 1000!!!). Now I track on Garmin and Strava and it gives me friendly reminders the time has come for them to go to the great "shoebox in the sky."

That's how it probably should be done, really. I need to get better about it.

ATTQOTD: I found the equipment setting in mapmyrun about halfway into the use on my last pair, but switched over to tracking via the Garmin. That is more of a guideline for me as I'm a heavier runner so not getting much miles out of shoes due to that reason (now that mileage has ramped up been losing little by little). I started to feel shin splints coming on and switched out the shoes. Love the color of my new ones and they are the same model as the last pair Saucony Ride 9, but 25 miles in not sure these are the right shoes for me. I may try to alternate a different type, but having trouble pulling the trigger.

QOTD: I go by mileage only, 350 miles per pair of Brooks Ghosts. I track the mileage online at http://www.running-log.com

I have a hierarchy of old shoes, from best to worst: casual/clean work shoes, lawn mowing shoes, painting shoes. I also keep a pair in each car for emergencies. When I retire a pair, they become the casual/clean working shoes and everyone else gets demoted, with the oldest ones getting recycled.

And when they are retired as running shoes, the first thing they get is a washing because they are nasty. I do all my miles outside and a lot of them on dirt and gravel roads. And they stink! I'm afraid to leave them inside for fear that the cats will find them so offensive they they try to 'mark' them with their own scent.

I don't think there is anything wrong with being nervous before a marathon. Most people are. They aren't easy. I even saw an interview with Meb where he said he gets really nervous before every marathon he runs. If he is nervous then I would say you have a right to be as well. The fact that you are nervous only means that you have picked a challenging goal and you are going outside your comfort zone. That's awesome! Be proud of yourself everyday!

QOTD: I track my mileage in my head. I know it sounds weird but I just add the miles after each run and keep it all in my mind. Then I go by feel as well. If a shoe is still feeling good I won't move it to everyday sneaker status just because I hit a certain mileage. On the flip side I won't keep going in a shoe just because I haven't hit a certain mileage either. If I'm in pain after a few runs it might be time to be done.

All this talk got me looking for deals though. The Asics outlet I usually go to is having a buy one get one 1/2 off sale right now. If my shoe qualifies for the sale I may be able to get 2 pair for $180 when one pair is normally $150 because the sneaker itself is currently on sale for $120. I think I am going tomorrow to try and stock up and get my shoes for next year. Their running clothes are also on sale for 70% off of the summer stock so I will see if I can find any goodies there too.

Oh, and I just need to add my status. I rode my bike outside today for the first time. It was in the 70's here, which is warm for MA this time of year. I was worried it would hurt bad but it didn't. I had to walk the big hills because that hurt but everything else was OK. I was sore all day but it sure felt good to get outside and feel free again. I know it isn't big running news but for me it was huge.

ATTQOTD: I have a training journal and write down my mileage for each pair. I usually retire my shoes when they get up there in mileage but this last time I felt like the shoes just weren't as cushioned as they use to be and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I once read that a good way to check the foam wear in a shoes is to bend the toe of the shoe backwards. If it easily bends in half, it's time to retire them. It seems to hold true for me.

On a side note, I finally got tracking info for my new watch. I'm like a kid before Christmas now. I can't wait until Friday!

ATTQOTD: I run in a few different types of shoes depending on the type and length of my run (trail or street and under or over 10 miles) and track the miles on each shoe. I begin to transition around 300 mile and retire the older shoes around 350-400 miles. Usually I can really begin to feel it as 400 gets closer. I do move running shoes to afterword/weekend shoes, then to yardwork shoes and then trash. I would like to donate some, right now I have about 8 pair just collecting dust in the basement that I will likely just not get to as I run through more.

Very psyched about my race this weekend, I have an agressive race goal. Going to give this every effort and see how it goes. I have never run this race before but hear it is very pretty. Good luck to everyone racing!

This week we have the following folks with races:

15 - @GARUNMOM - Lewis-Gale Salem Half Marathon (NG / N/A)
16 - @MommaoffherRocker - Marine Corp Half Marathon (NG / N/A)
16 - @baxter24 - Bull City Race Fest Half Marathon (NG / N/A)
16 - @sourire - Hershey Half Marathon (NG / N/A)
16 - LSUlakes - Gulf Coast Half Marathon (1:38:20 / N/A)

Per the usual, if you would like to revise your goal time, just let me know. Good luck to everyone this week!
Back from the Lake Powell Half Marathon - ran all the way from Arizona to Utah! From Standard Time to Daylight Savings Time, so an interesting situation where chip time was 2:53 (a new PR for DW, and done without her getting hurt, so mission accomplished!) but clock time was 1:53 (started at 6:30, finished at 8:23) - or maybe we finished at 10:23 for a clock time of 3:53 - so confusing. It was an anniversary trip for us - celebrating 7 wonderful years together! (well ok, we were married in 1990) - and DD (Dopey Daughter) had Fall Break from VT and was able to join us, making it even more special!

And for every time I get asked, this is why I run:

Awesome! Glad you were able to get out and enjoy the weather!

Ah-MAZ-ing! Wow, what a view, just gorgeous...

ATTQOTD: I track miles on my shoes and put about 400 miles on my long run pair and about 300 miles on my more minimal speedwork/short run shoes. One pair gets converted to dog walking shoes. Others I hold onto until I got to a race expo where they are collecting old shoes.

Todays QOTD came from a fellow poster on this forum. Thanks for the suggestion!

QOTD: I would be interested to hear the groups thoughts on posting runs on social media. Does everyone post each run on Instagram? Facebook? Find it annoying? Follow any inspirational runners on social media?

I post of some my runs to FB, but not all of them. Usually the ones I will post come with something special happening. A PR, a difficult run, something that is not just a everyday type run. I am not bothered by people posting a run to social media. If that is what motivates them to keep running than so be it. I do not follow any one person on social media, but do follow a few running based FB groups. A few weeks ago, a group called Flow Track was hacked and some NSFW content kept getting posted to their page which caused a lot more discussion than usual and was very entertaining reading through the comments.

We've been to that area twice. Even my phone was confused as to what time it was because you are right at the border of 2 states observing time differently (Arizona doesn't do Daylight Savings). Plus you are close to Navajo Nation and they observe Daylight Savings Time (even within Arizona). Anytime we really needed to know what time it was (according to places we were headed) we'd actually call and ask. :headache: I guess in an area with so much natural beauty, knowing the time of day is not that important.

ATTQOTD: Similar to my profile pic and Lake Powell pic above, I absolutely live for sharing family race pictures and short videos on Facebook with my family and friends. I think the best posts on social media show people being active, happy, and healthy, and serve to inspire others, plus it maintains connections between people with similar interests. I do however have my page locked down, plus I try to not be "that guy" flooding everybody's news feed with multiple mememelookatme posts. Also, I like sharing runs with family and friends on MapMyRun, but don't like sharing that across to FB (or get flooded by a bunch of MMR FB posts).
