QOTD: Do you track miles on shoes or do you retire them by calendar time? What criteria do you use to retire training shoes (e.g. How many miles)? What about racing shoes? Do they still look good? What do you do with them once you already have a pair for yard work, casual use, ect.?

I track my miles in Garmin Connect. I use it only to have an idea of where my shoes are, but retire them based on feel. Once they're retired they either become casual shoes or go in the trash, depending on how many I have laying around at the time.

I don't track miles on my shoes. I guess I would say I retire them by calendar time but I go more based on the look and feel of the shoe. If the shoe is worn down and doesn't feel as supportive as it should then it's likely time for it to be retired. If the shoe is still in good condition I'd use it for casual use otherwise it's my yard work shoes.

I track the miles with an app on my phone. It seems to be around 250-300 miles that I start to notice that I might need a new pair because my feet or my IT band ache a little more than they usually do after a run. The shoes usually still look pretty good once I decide I need a new pair. I usually keep one old pair around but I don't wear them much in terms of casual use. Not a huge fan of wearing shoes in general. It seems to have spread to my kids who get really mad when I make them wear shoes outside now. I would wear flip flops all year long if the weather allowed me to and I usually wear them way longer into fall and even winter if I can get away with it.

I track mine in Garmin connect. I have an alert set for 300 miles at which time I start gauging how I feel after running in them. Shin splints are normally my tell-tale sign it's time to retire. My latest shoes have gotten me close to 400 miles, but I've only used them for short distances of 5 miles since they hit the 330 mark.

ATTQOTD: I am so new to running that I haven't "retired" a pair of shoes yet. I switched up completely the type of shoe I run in, in January and am still in that pair. I keep my (paper) training schedules so I just went thru them and I am at about 300 miles. I have noticed lately that they just don't "feel" as comfortable and I've been getting some blisters. They still look perfect though so it's tough to convince DH, who isn't a runner, that I need new ones, especially at $170 a pop.

ATTQOTD: I am tracking the miles on my current pair of shoes, but I always based previous replacement off the feel.

@Miranda I run in Asics and also had to buy a size up in the new model too... It's weird that the current models are shorter.

Okay, great QOTD! It made me pull the trigger and order a new pair from Running Warehouse! I "technically" had permission from DH the other day so we will see how it goes when they arrive lol. :)
Make sure to keep an eye out for when your model of shoes gets "retired" for the newer model to come out, because they'll go on sale as places try to move inventory. I run in Brooks Adrenalines and Brooks is getting ready to release the 17 version, so all of the 16 version shoes are marked down 25% (hopefully they'll go down even further, i'm gonna keep checking both Running Warehouse and the Brooks site). I'm stocking up! :)

ATTQOTD: I track my mileage on paper because I train on the treadmill and on the road, so I just tally the miles for the shoes that I wear. I total the miles each month to see where they are at.

It's time for some new ones, based on time alone + miles on them.

And my comments above is not necessary... Glad you decided to get some new ones!

ATTQOTD: I usually wait until I have shin pain or something else out of the ordinary. Then I look back at my running calendar and realize sure enough it's been close to 300 miles on my shoes! It's always funny to me how spot on that is for me.

So I'm going to give myself a time goal for my half this Saturday. My main goal is to keep my 4:1 intervals that I've been training with. If I keep those intervals I should be able to run it in 2:34. Fingers crossed! :)

This is my first 10k, and will be my POT for the PHM. My goal is 1:10:00. It's kind of a hilly course, so fingers crossed!!!

ETA: It's a very small race, and I made the mistake of looking at last year's finishing times, and I am worried that I could be at the back of the pack...but am trying not to let it worry me too much!

ATTQOTD: I have them tracked on strava and garmin. Since strava automatically inputs your shoes (which can be annoying) I have higher mileage on it vs garmin. I've never tracked mileage before and would wait til they were falling apart. Right now I'm at 357 miles. I'm probably going to toss once my toe breaks through the upper, maybe around 500-600 miles? It makes me think I was running on 1000+ mile shoes before.

Anyways, I'm getting nervous since I only have 1 pair of new nimbus's (nimbii?) left and they're so expensive. Looking for bigger discounts... I keep forgetting to use @FFigawi 's suggested website www.shoekicker.com. But I did find Brooks Ghosts for 50% off on jackrabbit.com, the annoying thing is sometimes you have to call customer service after placing an order if you notice shipping isn't immediate.

Yes, I track my shoe mileage on Garmin Connect. I set a reminder at 350 miles, but I start paying attention to how they feel at about 250-300 miles. I keep my old shoes for yard work, etc, or until my wife makes me throw some out because they are cluttering all the closets.

Yes and No. My app that links to my watch tracks my shoes for me, but I've been bad about not adding in my treadmill runs to it. Which is a bigger issue in the winter when I'm on the treadmill more often. So I need to be better about it. I want to buy a second pair and rotate them in for my next training cycle after this one. So I'll crack down better on keeping track.
I retired my last pair because I got horrible foot pain and they were over a year old. I plan not to let that happen again.
You cannot tell my shoes are worn out by looking at them (bottom looks fine, I'm a neutral running so don't wear them down on either side.) But the inside was flat as a pancake.
My old shoes were too uncomfortable to even wear around the house so I pitched them (sad.)

ATTQOTD: I was using Strava but I got lazy and forgot to change shoes when I didn't run in the "default" pair. So I guess I'll just run on feel until I get things back in order.

For anyone interested, the lottery opens tomorrow for the NYC Half. It's open until Dec. 1 so no rush though. The race is in March 2017. Did it last year and really enjoyed it. Hoping to get in again.

ATTQOTD: First, I just want to share that shoe wear is the bane of my existence: I've never had a pair go longer than 250 miles, and I'm usually ready to retire them around 200. I hate spending that much $$$ on shoes!

Back to the actual question... I track via the iSmoothRun app. I know by feel when it's time to say goodbye, but tracking the mileage lets me know when that time is approaching so I can get a new pair rotating into the mix and mentally prepare to say "goodbye". (I can't be the only one who develops strong affection for great running shoes, right???) I don't use separate shoes for racing, but ALL of my retired shoes look nearly new, making parting ways that much harder! All of my wear is about a 1" line across the forefoot - that gets worn down to midsole, even though the upper and heel show hardly any wear. But with that much tread gone, the shoes are useless for even casual wear, so they go to the shoe store's recycling bin.

Which leads me to a question for all of you: anyone here use Shoe Goo? I've considered getting some to beef up the forefoot treads to maybe extend the life of my shoes, but wasn't sure if it actually works that way. Any thoughts?
