The Running Thread - 2016

Some of My running buddies favorite run is the Gigi's Cupcake 5k. It's a 5k, you get a cupcake shaped medal, a cupcake and a tshirt at the end of the race and it supports make a wish. If your in or around Raleigh in October you should check it out. https://app.racereach.com/r/gigis/register
I have a wedding to go to that day this year but in the future I am there.

Everest Had 3 simple obstacles. You had hay bales to jump, a net to crawl under and something else. It also had the scavenger hunt with puzzles to solve. It made for a fun race.
The 3rd obstacle was truck tires. I loved EEC! It was the perfect blend of challenge and fun to do with my son.

Okay, this is fun!
1. MK and area resorts. Night race ending at Haunted Mansion with the ride open.
2. 10K or 10 miler.
3. Haunted Mansion!
4. Hitchiking Ghosts, bride, Master Gracey, Madame Leota, graveyard ghosts, etc.
5. Leota in crystal ball or the HM logo laureate design.

You could bring back the ToT 10 miler as a second race and do a challenge around Halloween.
I would LOVE this!

Also I noticed so many people picked 10 miles as their preferred distance. Am I correct in that when you run a half marathon, once you reach 10 miles you feel like "this race could end here and that would be ok"? I've never ran a half yet but it's on my menu for next year.
I'm the opposite: if I'm going to 10, I'd rather keep going and go to 13.1. I always, without fail, hate miles 4-6 and 8-10 of any run, no matter the total distance. Once past 10, I'm ready to keep going!

Here we go:

Captain Jack Sparrow presents the Pirates of the Caribbean Moonlight Madness Half Marathon Weekend

1) Magic Kingdom and Epcot
2) 5k, 10k & 1/2 Marathon (all night races)
3) Pirates of the Caribbean
4) Jack Sparrow, Capt Barbossa, Davey Jones, Skeletal Pirates and other denizens from PotC
5a) 5k - Skeletal and normal pirates beneath a moon showing the transition
5b) 10k - The Black Pearl
5c) 1/2M - Capt Jack Sparrow with his compass
5d) 10k + 1/2M challenge - The Cursed Coin

For courses, I'll be a bit derivative and go with the stock WDWMW courses. 5k & 10k at night through Epcot and adjacent resorts with the World Showcase fires lit. PotC music and quotes throughout similar to what they did for SWDS. 1/2 marathon start at Epcot and run to MK with the route tweaked to run past PotC in addition to through the castle.

I'd be signed up for this race weekend in a heartbeat!

oh , I would totally do this race

I loved EEC. My son and I did it too years in a row. It was so much fun. Thanks for reminding me about the tires.

Did you guys see this story from the Olympics about the runners that fell during the women's 5000 meter race? It put a smile on my face :)

I hadn't seen that. I wish I could have watched that race.

Man! I would love to do that! Maybe it will go on the bucket list!

It was horrible what happened, but the way they both handled it was beautiful.

I had a very active morning/early afternoon today. I did a 45 minute/4.25 mile run on the treadmill this morning, and then swam some laps afterwards (as much as you can call them swimming laps in our apartment complex's pool! haha. But I had it to myself and I enjoyed it!). Needless to say I feel really good and accomplished right now. :)

Got to work today hoping to catch up today. I was then told to put work on hold and help with donations. From 8:00 to 5:30 my coworkers and I unloaded three 18 wheelers of supplies from Gulf Port Mississippi. We have two more coming in the morning. It's hard work but not as hard as some people have it.

It's been quieter than normal around here. Hopefully @LSUlakes is doing OK?

My computer is working for the time being so I thought I would share an update on my ankle because to some people it might be funny. Being the one involved, not so much.

Yesterday I had an appointment at the doctor. They were taking the cast off and if the incisions healed the stitches were coming out. I pack up the kids and we head to the doctor. Normally my oldest would babysit but we needed our next dose of rabies vaccine, in the same hospital, about an hour after my appointment so road trip for me and the kids.

We get to the reception desk and we are waiting to check in. While I am waiting this employee pushing a lady in a wheelchair comes barging in front of me. Once he was told I was next he backed up. Well, he kept on backing up, without looking where he was going, and stepped on a guy in a wheelchair behind him. No apologies, nothing. (This is relevant info, I promise). He was like a bull in a china shop. Finally he leaves and I get checked in. Now I am waiting in the waiting area and the door opens, they call my name. It is the guy that put my cast on. Oh, Yes! This guy was great. Quiet, fun to talk to, just a pleasure all around. He brings me in and asks me how I am doing, the whole nine yards. As we round the corner to enter the casting room, he passes me off to the bull in the china shop! I think, "Oh Great, this guy is taking my cast off". I sit on the table. He turns the saw on and says, "This won't hurt and it won't cut you." Then he dives at my leg. I can feel it moving down my leg, and I am a little nervous but my leg was itchy from the cast and it was making the itch go away so I went with it.

THEN, he runs this saw/power tool directly over the incision area on the side of my ankle (I have one on top too). Dude, *** are you doing? Are you crazy? It felt like I got shot in the ankle. I jerked my leg away. He says, "You can't do that, you need to keep still. It won't hurt you!" "Um, yeah it did hurt, pretty bad actually." He says, "It won't cut you so keep still, you almost chopped my thumb off." I think to myself, how did this saw that won't cut me almost chop his thumb off, he's lying to me about something here because that just doesn't make any sense. :scared: Of course the kids are now horrified after watching this. I just don't know how this guy thinks and area that would hurt if baby kittens licked it wouldn't hurt with a power tool running over it!!!!

Finally he gets the cast off and then leaves. Thank God! The nurse practitioner comes in to check me out. Everything looks good. Stitches are coming out. I am going into an air cast. I say, "Excellent, how long until I can walk again? (Thinking the stitches are out this must be soon) She says, "4 more weeks at least?" Come on!!!! I ask her nicely to explain why it is so much longer than what the doctor initially told me. She says, "In order to realign your foot he had to cut one of the bones in 1/2 and it needs to heal." Wonderful! I go back in 4 weeks for X-Rays to see if the bone is healed and I can put some weight on it to start walking.

The good news is, I get to take this boot off. Starting tomorrow I can not hang my leg out of the tub when I do my sit down showers. I can finally ice it to bring the swelling down. I have to start my stretching exercises, which don't hurt at all. :rolleyes1 When I took the boot off to sleep last night I noticed that my left calf is dwindled down to nothing. I have hardly any muscle in it, especially compared to my right one and I still have at least 4 weeks before I can even start using it, what will it look like then?

But, now that I can take this off and shower it means I can start my P90X. Of course I will wear it during the exercise but I can change socks and stuff under it for when I sweat. And today I made the mistake of looking up the surgery to see if I could find a video and watch what they did to me. I only found pictures and I am glad I stopped looking for the videos. I have all kinds of new pain now that I can move my foot and I have decided I am ready for this to be done! :crutches:

Sending you good vibes on your continued healing. You are going to come back better than ever!

Don't forget that Disneyland also had one and only one full marathon too!

Disneyland Full Marathon

That was awesome. I did that 5k. There was no way I was in any shape to do the marathon at that point, but running in Disneyland? What could be better? It made me want to do the WDW Marathon, only took me 21 years to get that out of the way. The cool thing is that I still have my shirt and I'm going to wear that in this year's Half. Universal Studios did a 5k run also on the backlot that year.

Glad the water is moving in the right direction. Praying for @LSUlakes and everyone else being affected by this weather!

I can offer up a QOTD to distract us all a little from our daily grind and the not so fun challenges that have been popping up that are out of our control.
If you could conjure up an ideal Disney race for you where price and getting there etc, was no issue, what would be...
1) The disney park location
2) The distance
3) The theme
4) The character you will meet
5) The medal
bonus: If it was a challenge what would be the specific challenge you'd have to do for the additional medal?

I'm going to two different scenarios and I realize some of this has already been done:

Marathon Relay
1) Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, WWOS and Hollywood Studios
2) 26.2 miles (or 13.1 miles per leg)
3) Standard Marathon Weekend Theme
4) I guess Mickey
5) Chip & Dale
Bonus - Do the Donald Half on Saturday and the Relay on Sunday, you get a Daisy Duck Challenge medal!

TOT/Villians Themed Weekend
1) Epcot, Animal Kingdom, WWOS and Hollywood Studios
2) 5K (Saturday Morning), 10-miler (Saturday night), 13.1 (Sunday morning)
3) 5K would be family-friendly Halloween themed, 10-miler would Tower of Terror Themed, and the half would be Villains themed
4) Not sure
5) 5K would be one or several of the fab 5 changing from year to year; 10-miler would be what the regular TOT Medal looked like; half medal would have a different villain year to year.
Bonus - Do the 10-miler and half to earn a challenge medal

As I mentioned a few days ago, a friend talked me into a 10K race Saturday. And by talking me into it, I mean she asked and, since I haven't done a road race since February, I said yes. Anyhow. This weekend was my planned Dumbo practice. I originally planned a 4-5 miler Saturday and a 10 miler for Sunday. Obviously that 4-5 has turned into a 10K.

My plan for Dumbo in a couple weeks is to take it super easy for the 10K so I am ready for the half the next day. I was planning to go super slow for the 10K this weekend, but my inner-runner keeps whispering things in my ear. I had a 6 miler with 4 miles at HMP on the calendar this week. (It was supposed to be today, actually, but I have moved things around a bit.)

So my question is what would you do: Should I stick with my plan this weekend with an easy 10K followed by an easy 10 miler OR do I do a bit of racing (with myself) and pick up the pace a bit since I already had something on the calendar? Dumbo is just about two weeks out.

Hopefully that made sense.

Since you already had a HMP run scheduled, I think you should do the entire 10k at your goal HMP. It definitely wouldn't be all out racing, but it will still be at a good pace. I did this for the 10k on Star Wars Dark Side weekend, then raced the half marathon the next day. The 10k at HMP gave me good confidence for my half marathon pacing.

In a effort to getting back to normal, we have the following folks with races this week:

18 - @Miranda - Saunders at Rye Harbor 10K (1:15:00 / N/A)
20 - @michigandergirl - Mitchell's Run 5K (28:00 / N/A)
20 - LSUlakes - Twilight Classic 5k (19:30 / CANCELLED)
20 - @MommaoffherRocker - Summer Beach Run 5 Miler (NG / N/A)
21 - @CheapRunnerMike - Ironman Mont Tremblant (11:00:00 / N/A)

Let me know if you would like to revise your goal for your upcoming race. Good luck to you all this weekend!

My race has been cancelled for obvious reasons, and since I haven't run in nearly a week, I am actually ok with that.
