The Running Thread - 2016

I don't know all the details but I think a race where you run from ride to ride and have to ride the ride as a part of the race would be great! Like run to the jungle cruise and ride, then the haunted mansion, etc. It would have to be a night race so the ride would be free from regular guests. Everybody's race time would be awful, but it would be so much fun! ...oooo! Maybe the medal could look like a fastpass!

If you could conjure up an ideal Disney race for you where price and getting there etc, was no issue, what would be...
1) The disney park location
2) The distance
3) The theme
4) The character you will meet
5) The medal
bonus: If it was a challenge what would be the specific challenge you'd have to do for the additional medal?
Awesome idea!

1. Animal kingdom
2. 5K or 10K
3. Lion King
4. Duck tales or rescue Rangers. Of course some lion king themed characters there too.
5. Timon and Pumba

Bonus: let's make it a 5K and 10K challenge 5K medal and 10k medal come together to make one medal for the challenge. One medal has timon, one has Pumba. Put them together to create one big challenge medal.

I love @Barca33Runner 90s weekend idea!

Today's question is great. Several Years ago my answer probably would have been a Paris half marathon with an international challenge, but Disney offered that and I didn't sign up.

I'd love Disney to do a half Iron Man (Marvel Themed) but I am not sure if they could do the swim in Bay Lake.

My thoughts exactly on the triathlon...I would have said Bay Lake a couple of months ago but now there's no way they would let a bunch of people swim out there.

Playing catch up again - just spent 5 days camping on Lake Superior in the UP. We were so off the grid! No phone service, no TV's, and occasionally we could find a radio station, but to get the weather, we would walk over to the host campsite where she would write the weather on a dry erase board every day - totally awesome! The downside though was missing a lot of the Olympics...

@Kristina685 Ten miles on a treadmill deserves a gold medal!

@LSUlakes Hope you have remained dry.

Yesterday's QOTD: I have never signed up for a race the day-of. I'm too much of a planner, I need at least a weeks notice. I used to be a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of girl until I had kids - they bring enough adventure to my life now.

I may need more time to think about today's QOTD, but for now I'll say it must involve beer and a Stitch medal.

I think it's kind of funny that you posted this question today. Given the recent news about deferrals and Rudy it seems like the general undertone is that a lot of people are thinking about doing less with runDisney. It's frustrating for me because Disney is a great way to get people that might not normally try a half marathon to try it. For me personally I wouldn't be running now if it weren't for runDisney. The removal of the ability for others to pick bibs up for you, the changes to when POT needs to be submitted, the removal of corral changes at the expo, the elimination of deferrals, all make running a Disney race a little bit harder now than it was 5 years ago. I wound up deferring this years Marine Corps Marathon yesterday and it's sad to see how much more runner friendly their options are than Disney.

Water is still dropping at this time. The south side of town (Gonzales) is flooding. Maybe not out the woods yet. I plan on going back to work tomorrow and will try to get things back to normal. I anticipate that I will be extra busy since we missed a few days, but hope to post a QOTD again soon.

I'm not doing this, but would be fun to see who might try... You said nothing was an issue, right?

1) WDW to DL (a true coast to coast challenge)
2) Far (>2500 miles)
3) Pain
4) At some point along the course, you'd begin hallucinating your own characters
5) Lifetime annual pass you would wear like a medal for finishing

1) Nighttime DL/DCA race definitely
2) 5k, 10k, 15k options
3) PIXAR where's the PIXAR love at Disney!
4) All of the above
5) Take your pick of individual medal themes for each race; my preferences would be Wall-E and Eve, Carl and Ellie, and any of the others

bonus: two different challenge medals: one for any two races and another option if you do all 3. Luxo would obviously be one of these ...

Here we go:

Captain Jack Sparrow presents the Pirates of the Caribbean Moonlight Madness Half Marathon Weekend

1) Magic Kingdom and Epcot
2) 5k, 10k & 1/2 Marathon (all night races)
3) Pirates of the Caribbean
4) Jack Sparrow, Capt Barbossa, Davey Jones, Skeletal Pirates and other denizens from PotC
5a) 5k - Skeletal and normal pirates beneath a moon showing the transition
5b) 10k - The Black Pearl
5c) 1/2M - Capt Jack Sparrow with his compass
5d) 10k + 1/2M challenge - The Cursed Coin

For courses, I'll be a bit derivative and go with the stock WDWMW courses. 5k & 10k at night through Epcot and adjacent resorts with the World Showcase fires lit. PotC music and quotes throughout similar to what they did for SWDS. 1/2 marathon start at Epcot and run to MK with the route tweaked to run past PotC in addition to through the castle.

I'd be signed up for this race weekend in a heartbeat!

SIGN. ME. UP.

I am naive to ultra distance running, but SIGN ME UP! If I had endless money and could be ensured a safe trip across the country then I would definitely attempt a transcontinental run. Not ready for it now, but it might be fun someday in the future.

So, for the swim I guess it would have to be 2.11 times around Blizzard Beach's lazy river (Cross Country Creek) for a half IM.

So this is getting real now...leaving bright and early Thursday morning!

They used to have triathlons in the lagoon. There was the Walt Disney World Triathlon, and then there was at least one non-Disney run one from the now-defunct Danskin Women's Triathlon Series. I was supposed to do the Danskin one at one point many moons ago.

I think they stopped having them because of the brain amoebas.

1. Disney Wilderness Preserve at WDW, plus whatever could be cobbled together from surrounding preserve/trail to get the full distance
2. 13.1
3. Nature and preservation
4. Hmm... Safari Mickey?
5. a Circle of Life connecting flora, fauna and parks of central FL
Bonus: Expedition Everest Challenge-like family 5K/clue hunt

My friends have been wanting an obstacle race at Disney, something like Spartan but more Disney and less "kill me." I'm not sure Expedition Everest was ever an actual obstacle course? I guess you could make it Disney-like but make riding rides part of the obstacle? haha

Everest Had 3 simple obstacles. You had hay bales to jump, a net to crawl under and something else. It also had the scavenger hunt with puzzles to solve. It made for a fun race.

If they offered a 7 disney locations in 7 days (similar to the 7 continent marathon challenge) would you do it? I added in Aulani to make the #7 and also because it would be a heck of a place to stay and relax and "recover." I would 100% do it if I could just trade fitness and ability with you for one week :)
If price were no object, this would get my vote - But I would spread it out more. 7 events in 7 weeks, with a week at each location. Remember, cost is no object so dream big.
