The Running Thread - 2016

Flood update:
Picking up all items off the floor. Water is backing up into the canal and ponds. I'm shaking... It's moving fast... In the wrong direction! I've never felt so helpless in my life

I'm so sorry to hear this but I have my fingers crossed that things improve soon for you guys.

Flood Update @ 2:28:
Water is continuing to rise but remains in its banks. Moved as much as I could to counters, attic, ect.
Although I haven't been able to respond to everyone I would like to say thank you for your support

New here, but praying for safety of everyone. Be safe!

@LSUlakes I can't imagine what you're going through. Get out if you need to when the time comes.

@Neon Cactus a Dumbo test run! You are much more dedicated than I! I'm pretty sure my Dumbo experience is going to be a disaster. Great work!

So no back-to-back runs for me this week as I thought it would be a great idea to go bar-hopping with my nieces 3 weeks before Dumbo! LOL. I came out alive and feeling very much my age on Saturday morning. Good news is I still got out there on Sunday, but I did go much later than anticipated so it was just too hot to go all 4 miles at tempo. Ahh well ... Dumbo should be interesting to the say the least ...

Alright, I gave the Sports Beans a try on my long run yesterday. Loved the taste, watermelon with caffeine, but when it came time to actually take them I realized that I wasn't sure of the best way. With GU, it's one and done. So I when I hit my fueling time, I ended up chewing three or four at a time during walking intervals. That means it took me nearly twenty minutes to consume a bag!

This should be common sense, but is this right? Should I spread them out even more or try to eat them in a shorter amount of time? Honestly, while I love the taste of Shot Blocks, I eventually stopped using them because I felt like I wasn't getting the fuel in quickly enough and would end up bonking.

I spread them out. I eat 3 or so every 30 minutes on any run over 1 hour. You just have to try things and figure out what works for you.

I'm so sorry. Praying for you and for everyone in Louisiana.

@LSUlakes hope it doesn't rise much further!

As an update to the safety question... I went for my morning run and despite it being a busier area: runners, bicyclists, cars, park rangers ... and even though there's a sheriff's tactical training center there with constant SWAT training ... a man snuck out of the bushes wearing a shirt. Just a shirt. Luckily he was on the other side of the road and jumped back in the bushes when a car drove by. I don't think he was intentionally trying to flash me. At least I hope not. This occurred around 9:45am.

Also, I made a mistake about the runner around Princeton, I was thinking about the Queens jogger: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/06/nyregion/spring-creek-park-queens-karina-vetrano.html

Yikes! That is crazy. Glad the guy ran back into the woods! I wondered if the NY runner was the one you were referring too, but I haven't seen much about it, except when news reports compare the two. It is alarming that there were multiple runners killed in a short time, but so far, despite a lot of similarities, authorities don't think the cases are connected. The NY jogger and woman who was killed in Princeton have very similar Instagram photos, and the woman killed here actually lives in NY, she's from here and was back visiting her mom.

I happened to have PT this afternoon and talked to him about my concerns while he was doing Graston massage (aka torture) and he actually runs in the area I was thinking of starting to run towards. He said its hilly, but very highly travelled, and he recommended it for safety. Made me feel much better.

@LSUlakes I hope the water stops rising and you and your family stay safe.

@LSUlakes thinking of you!! Hoping you are all staying safe.

Re: the safety concerns: I probably should not wear my headphones out there...usually I just put one earbud in, but still...lots of good points made in the various articles posted about awareness of surroundings, using all your senses to let you know something might be wrong, etc. I carry a little can of pepper spray, but thankfully have never had to use it.
