The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: If you could go out for a run (distance not important here) with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?
This is a tough and interesting question. It's kind of hard to think of someone who runs that I would want to run with. My first thought would be Walt but he wasn't a runner he did water polo or something I think. Now being a Wisconsin guy and a huge Packer fan I'm going to say Brett Favre since he now does triathlons.

If LSU only wins one game this year and that win is against bama, I would be satisfied with the season. My BIL worked with Saban @ LSU and said the guy is a great coach but a ____Insert not nice word. Could be part of the reason he is a great coach. BTW, the LSU v/s Bama game this year is on my birthday and a home game!
LSU returns a lot of talent this year, and Alabama lost a ton of talent to the NFL, so if not this year, when? Of course I hope that Alabama spoils your birthday, but it's not personal. :P

Seriously - LSU is loaded this year. With solid QB play you have as good a chance as any other team of winning it all.

As for Saban - I have friends and family in the professional coaching business. Most have serious ego problems. I am sure that Saban does, too. But he is still the best coach in the business and I would love meet him some day.

So - not *technically* running related, but in a roundabout way it ultimately is.

I've got an interview for a job tomorrow. That's right, I may leave the ranks of the retired!

If y'all can keep your fingers crossed that I can actually remember how to interview, that would be great ...

You will do great!
Make sure you ask for enough "Disney Days" in your vacation package.

Yesterday's QOTD: I have many, many goals, but I guess the next one would be my race this Saturday. If I can get under 28:00 that will be proof to me that I'm getting faster. My last 5K in March was 27:57. Prior to this year I hadn't had a time under 28:00 in the last 8 years. My PR is 26:29 and I'm not sure I'll ever get there again (almost 10 years ago), but I'm headed in the right direction anyway!

Today's QOTD: I would run with my Dad, who passed away almost 7 years ago.

QOTD: If you could go out for a run (distance not important here) with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?

I'm going to keep true to the "run" aspect of this question; otherwise, it's really just a "if you could meet anyone from history (or current), who would it be?" question.

Now that I said that, I'm not sure I have one answer. From a historical perspective, maybe Pheidippides (credited with the original marathon), or more currently, maybe Frank Shorter or Bill Rodgers.

If I had to choose one, however, I think it would be my neighbor from across the street who died a couple years ago of stomach cancer. He was a runner (in fact, I think he was @CheapRunnerMike fast), but unfortunately, I didn't meet him until his cancer was pretty far along, so although we went on a slow bike ride once, I never had a chance to run with him. We seemed to be very similar people, about the same age, liked all the same odd things, had kids about the same age, and I really wish we had met earlier in life. A run with him in his prime would have been a lot of fun.

QOTD: What is your next goal race?

ATTQOTD: A local 15K in early Oct. I HATE racing for time, but I'll need a new PoT for Disney soon, so... if the planets align and we somehow manage to get some cooler weather (because early Oct. is still summer here), I'd like to nail a nice time on that one.

QOTD: If you could go out for a run (distance not important here) with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?

ATTQOTD: Non-famous - my 14yo son. He used to run with me and it was so nice to spend that time together. He lost interest a few years ago and I miss his company. Famous - Usain Bolt. Because USAIN BOLT!!!

So @LSUlakes the way I see it you should root for Wisconsin to beat LSU in Week 1 so that it will remove all the pressure from the team before their triumphant run to the national championship... Wait, what.... that reasoning doesn't make complete sense. Ahh, don't worry just go with it. :thumbsup2

Edit*
QOTD: What is your next goal race?

Marine Corps Marathon, though my goal is just to finish my first full, and get to the start uninjured. That would be a first for me!

!

My first though was Gronk:). That guy can make anything fun! I'm sure I can think of an answer with deeper meaning, but he was my first thought.

The game will be during Wine and Dine weekend. ESPN at Boardwalk is a fun place to watch a game. (The nachos are awesome!) I might be sporting my Loudmouth houndstooth pants for the occasion! ::yes:: Go big or go home. :thumbsup2 Roll Tide!

Brett Favre gets beat by his wife in triathlon...maybe you should run with her :)

Less than 100 days to kickoff! Sucks the game is a ~2:30 start, and also a CBS game if I recall correctly. SO. MANY. COMMERCIALS!!!!

The key to this is the quarterback play for the Tigers. One would think he would improve, but for some reason LSU has trouble developing the QB position. LSU can get away with running people over all day long, but not so much against bama. I will add that we don't need 1st round pick talent from the QB position, just someone to manage the game. He can throw the long ball well, put the shorter passes have given him a problem. Only time will tell.

My wife and I stayed at Boardwalk for our honeymoon almost 7 years ago during the CWS. We took an afternoon off from the parks and watched a game there and had some beers! Enjoyed the place. Football season is going to be fun with two Bama fans on the board. lol. For the time being we have the Super Regionals this weekend and hopefully Omaha!

QOTD: If you could go out for a run (distance not important here) with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?

My wife. She actually started training for the 2005 DW Marathon, but she has knee and back issues that wouldn't allow her to hit the longer distances. I've always envied those who have the opportunity to run with their spouses as I think its a cool way to spend time together.

Goal Race: I think I'm going to sign up for the RnR San Antonio Half in December and use that as a fitness test for my January Houston Marathon. They actually just announced new half and full courses so it will be neat to try out the new routes.

That's where I watched the Alabama/Clemson game this year - AWESOME!

Offensive play calling has been the larger problem, IMO. You have the talent on the field, but are too predictable. If Alabama's defense knows that you are going to run the ball on a particular play, that run is going nowhere. This is an over-simplification, but Alabama's defense is designed to take away the run and force the opposing QB to win the game. But even then, you have to be wiling to run on passing downs and pass on running downs - all out of formations that allow for either.

Football season is going to be fun with two Bama fans on the board. lol.
I love Alabama football, but not enough to lose a friend. I don't talk smack - just football. :thumbsup2

ATTQOTD 6/8: Goal race this year is Dumbo, my first challenge! EEK!! I'm not big on back-to-back running. I would take two days off after every run if I could. I'm not sure what I was thinking. Oh yeah #allthemedals #irunforbling

ATTQOTD 6/9: Mike Trout. LOL. This may sound weird, and I know it is, but we are all friends here and you all will get a good laugh. Last year some time, I had a dream that Mike Trout was running with me at my local track. That was when I knew I needed to change up the scenery. LOL. A serious one would be younger me on that fateful day in high school when I almost passed out running. If only I would have started running back then ... but alas, everything happens for a reason. :)

All of my runs have been tough lately ... and slow. I ran a wood chip covered route yesterday and was really slow. I think it must be harder than I think (more like a trail I guess?) because my quads are very sore and tight today. Although I think my running intervals are getting longer/easier, so there is that. Hopefully this all pays off eventually. But it's not great for training morale.

Lucky, lucky it's on ABC. It's actually the site of ESPNs Gameday for Week 1. However, the 2:30 makes sense because if the general public has the choice between LSU v WI or Bama v USC at the same time slot, most would have chosen Bama v USC. Although, having a night game at Lambeau Field would have been pretty special for the players.

QOTD: If you could go out for a run (distance not important here) with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?

Definitely my kids. My kids are 24 and 21. When they were running in MS/HS competitively, I was in no shape to be able to run with them. Instead I probably pushed, (over)coached, and en(dis)couraged them from the sideline... knowing very little about running. In hindsight, as someone who actually runs now, I supported them very wrong... but at least I was there. Now neither of them really care to run even though they were both pretty good. :guilty: My hope is that someday they will begin to run again and we can all participate in a Disney race together. My daughter-in-law (my 24 year-old's wife) is already working towards marathon 2018 because I told all of them after my 2016 wdw marathon (I had a nice chear squad) that I'd take any of them back that would run it with me.

My wife started running, so I get to run with her a little. She just ran her first 5k a couple weeks back. :)

Off Topic:
I will throw in some running stuff too. Last trip we used one of those bags you get at races, "swag bag". Thought it was a great idea, but after 1.5 days it started to rip. Then things started falling out. I used safety pins to hold it together, for a while and by then end of the day I had to ask for a plastic bag at one of the gift shops to hold our stuff. So we are making a return trip this fall and wanted some tips on bags you carry around the park. I don't like to leave to much stuff with the stroller, but it does serve a purpose. I have looked at some book bag types and found one I like.
