The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: Since today is National Running day, how far do you plan to run today? Doing anything else to celebrate?
Last Wednesday was the kick-off of our Splash n Dash season...a 2-loop 1600m open water swim followed by a 2-loop 5K. It is what I call "friendly-competitive"...meaning I go as hard as I need to to put the heat on whoever is first out of the water ;) So it will be a relatively quick 5K for me followed by a short 2.5K cool down

This week we have the following folks with races!

04 - @croach - Conquer the Cove 15k (NG / N/A)
05 - @Anisum - Run the Vineyards Old Country 10k (Sub 1:20:00 / N/A)
05 - LSUlakes - The Navy 10 Nautical Miler (11.5078 Mi) (1:29:00 / N/A)
05 - @Dis5150 - The Navy 10 Nautical Miler (11.5078 Mi) (NG / N/A)
05 - @Miranda - Covered Bridges Half Marathon (2:45:00 / N/A)
05 - @Disney at Heart - Echo Half Marathon (2:35:00 / N/A)
05 - @roxymama - Run for the Zoo 5k (NG / N/A)

As usual, let me know if you would like to revise your goal for this weekends race. Good luck to everyone this upcoming weekend!

@Dis5150 Are you looking forward to the race this weekend? Last time I looked at the forecast, it looks like it may be a little wet. When are you planning on getting into town for the race? The packet pick-up/expo is in an old gym that is only cooled by fans. So if its hot outside prepare for it to be warm at the expo. The post race stuff is also in the same building, but by the point it probably wont matter.

ATTQOTD: short run on the training plan today.

I know there are a couple Apple Watch runners on the thread - noticed a new app out supposedly designed for the Apple Watch. Costs 2.99 so might want to let some reviews come in first though.

I got a soggy six miles in this morning, but I must admit I didn't know it was National Running Day when I ran. In any case, when we are out at our local Mexican restaurant tonight celebrating the end of school for the kiddos, I promise to have a margarita and toast National Running Day.

It's been a little crazy for me lately and I haven't had much time to check on the board. For those following along, my stepdad has been taken out of ICU and placed into a normal room. A DNR was signed, so at this point they are just trying to make him comfortable. He has been talking some, but it has been a struggle to do so. The fact that he is still breathing on his own is its own little miracle because the Dr. said it was highly unlikely he would be able to. Without going into to much more detail, I continue to ask for yalls prayers that he is comfortable.
Also, DW is having issues with her back and we had to get medical treatment over the weekend to help with the pain. She is doing much better now, but seeing her in that much pain wasn't much fun and explaining it to a 2 year old was a challenge.

Running Totals for May = 108.29 miles. First time over 100 since January. I hope to exceed that number this month.

I am looking forward to it! Every time I look the weather is different! But I am very happy to see that it is supposed to be cooler than the first time I checked. They had it at 90 then! Accuweather only has .08 inches of rain for the whole day so hopefully that is accurate. We will probably leave here about 10:00 Saturday morning. It's only about a 3 1/2 hour drive from here. But the vehicle we are taking does NOT have air conditioning so that will be fun! It gets the best gas mileage though so it wins out. I can't tell you how happy I was to realize that my hotel has 12:00 check out so with a 6:00 start time, I should be able to go back and shower before we head home on Sunday! I was thinking how awful it was going to be to be hot and sweaty and then driving home without showering in a truck with no air conditioning! Thanks for the heads up about the expo. I will warn DH to dress accordingly! I just looked and there are 1398 people registered! So hopefully I won't be last! The heat slows me down so much! What time are you planning on getting there? Would be nice to say hello and put a face to the screen name! :)

ATTQOTD: Wed is my husband's swim practice night, so no running on running day for us. But maybe I will throw on some running youtubes tonight while I clean.

@LSUlakes you can put me down for No Goal on my Zoo race. I have a feeling I won't sub-30 like I normally do just from a heat & current fitness standpoint. I was going to tell you sub 35:00 as a conservative goal but now I am thinking it's way better to just not have a goal and then I don't have to beat myself up if things go south and I decide to take it way easier/walk. But I'll be so excited if I feel good.

Someone mentioned kilometers vs mileage data. I do an odd thing for my races. I set my splits as kilometers and not miles. So I get alerts at every kilometer. For two reasons 1) to keep me from being mileage split obsessed while running...to run on feel. Since I haven't taught myself the math yet. 2) Miles feel like they take forever to get to. So when I am at a race I can check off every K of a 10K for example. And then I also have the actual mile markers on the course. So I have a lot more "check points" to keep me moving.
Is that weird? It works for me.

Hopefully I will actually do my run tonight! 5.0 miles on the dreadmill!

I haven't been on the threads since Thursday night so I am very far behind! Here are my stats for May:

Miles - 70.1

I haven't synced my garmin to my garmin connect acct. yet and I'm at work(I have an old garmin!) so I don't have my time or average time. My total miles is from my training plan. I am surprised it was that low for May. Seemed like I ran much more than that! :)

Yes! Run with kilometre splits like me and you can feel faster! I agree, those mile markers at rD races seem soooo far apart when you're used to kilometre splits. BTW, the math is 1 mile = 1.6km

My achilles and ankles are super sore from a Memorial Day hike we did. The hike is made up of switchbacks that climb 1100 feet up a mountain, then back down (total hike is just 2.5 miles). The down hill kills me every time!! Anyway, I did manage to do a slow 2.85 mile shake out run on the treadmill. I had to get it done before the kids went to school so they could watch the puppy! :)

ATTQOTD: Just an easy 4 miles on the schedule for this evening. Hopefully the storms hold off. Also, as a follow-up, my HR info seems to be falling in line with expected since I manually updated the ranges for each zone on my FR 235. So for anyone out there playing with a FR 235, take the time to set your max and resting HR and also make sure to adjust the zone ranges to appropriate percentages.

By the way, amazon has some Saucony products as their deal of the day - including zealots for $62.50.

@LSUlakes - thanks for the reminder about Running Day - a half marathon I had my eye on is giving a discount today! Maybe some other races / running stores will have deals too! Also, good luck getting a run in! Anything is better than nothing!

ATTQOTD: I got a groupon for a barre class, so I'm trying it out this morning. Luckily it doesn't interfere with my planned 3 mile run this afternoon. I might even be able to squeeze in a mile or 2 before and after the class!

And you return the avg pace calculation favor with a sale on one of my new rotating shoes (Zealots). Works for me! Thanks!

ATTQOTD: I'm hoping to get in 2 miles this evening and then going to DS 9's award ceremony.

@LSUlakes can you add another race for me when you get a chance Thanks!

June 11 - MommaofherRocker - Run For The Pies 5k
It will be DS9's first 5k, so the goal will be just to have fun!

ATTQOTD: Wednesday is actually my spin cross train day so I don't have any miles planned. :o Tomorrow, though, I will do a short run before Sunday's half.

I guess I'm going to stick with my 2:45 goal, but I'm not really feeling super confident about that after my epic blow up 3:05 3 weeks ago. The course is described as: "The course has a very gentle downgrade, dropping 200 feet in elevation over the 13.1 miles. There is a moderate hill at mile 5 and a short, steep hill at mile 8."

Elevation.jpg

Hopefully the downhills will power me to a good finish. :) I will be walking up that mile 8 hill though. ;)

I wish I was feeling a little more confident. The course time limits on this are 13 min mile, which originally I thought would be no problem (2:45 is my PR from last fall). I think they'll just pull course support though, as previous year results showed people finishing quite a bit after 3:00.

One of the biggest things I'm worried about is not getting my shirt. :o It's a point to point course with no packet pickup, only pickup of your bib at the start line, and the shirt is handed out at the finish line. After the disaster with shirts at the North Shore 10 Miler in April (they ran out of all sizes of women's shirts except small like an hour before the race), I'm paranoid there will be no shirts left to fit me at the end, even though I think the sizes for this one are actual orders (the other race it was not guaranteed, just to help them figure out what to order).

I really like my free shirts. :D
