The Running Thread - 2016

Now I need to figure out which Cirque du Soleil show to attend!

Ka (MGM) and La Reve (Wynn) are our two favorites

Haha I was actually going to say I wasn't super impressed with Ka, but I think it had more to do with the fact that we saw it a few months after the death of a performer and I feel like they didn't quite know what to do with the finale. Maybe they changed it.

I will say ANY Cirque show is amazing though! I actually get a boost in my running after seeing performances like that. It is truly amazing to see what the human body is capable of!

Thanks John. I will take a look at these articles when I am awake enough to focus. Your zone's are much higher than mine. How old are you if you don't mind sharing? I calculate 120-135 for my Zone 2 running and I am 42. I have to do my bike still.

I'm 47.

I caught it for a bit before I started work. I got to see right before the 11 hour cutoff and there were people sprinting to try and make it before it hit 11:00 and some people missed by just inches and then they were swept off in a different direction when they crossed too late. I would have been so mad if that were me.

At least they got to finish. Their medal changed color, but they finished. It's the poor people who are one step from the line when the clock hits 12:00 who I really feel for. Missing by one second over 12 hours would drive me nuts for the next year. The first person who didn't finish this year was going for his green number (10 finishes). I hope he gets it next year.

I made the mistake of falling behind in the thread again.

First off congrats to everyone on their races this weekend. I hope they went well.

@LSUlakes I'm so glad things are starting to look up a bit. I hope that he continues to improve.

In response to your idea @Baloo in MI I won't be at Marathon Weekend this year (I have high hopes for 2018 though) but I think it sounds like a great idea. Your father-in-law sounds like a great guy and I'm so sorry for your loss. I sounds like he'd be very proud of how far you're going now. An ultra is no small feat (and Dopey certainly isn't either).

Go away for the weekend and you sure miss a lot on here! Congrats to those who raced this past weekend and to all of my American friends on here (which is pretty much all of you), have a happy and safe Memorial Day! Enjoy the time today with your loved ones and make the most of the summer weather that's finally starting to show up :)
I was at a Triathlon Camp this weekend, which is quite possibly one of the dorkiest sounding things there is...seriously, is there isn't too much nerdier than a grown man going to camp! It was a lot of fun though and I got lots of swimming, biking and running in with a bunch of great people.
Weekend highlight for me though...my Mum ran her first ever marathon yesterday in her hometown race in Edinburgh, Scotland. She finished feeling good and beat her 6:00 goal by 10 minutes! I am one proud son right now :woohoo:

Thanks......we have seen 3 different shows.......heard good things about Ka and La Reve and the Wynn is where I need to be for my conference so that may be a winner. Of course my wife will campaign hard for ONE as she is a big Michael Jackson fan and would be interesting to see the Cirque du Soleil take on his music.

Yes, I think it's a great race! Run to Remember is my favorite local half, benefits the MA fallen law enforcement. Great route, starts at seaport, pass Faneuil Hall, Beacon ST to Mass Ave bridge over to Memorial Drive and back. It is well run with volunteers, good water stops and potties, although I was surprised the med tent didn't have Biofreeze for cramps. Good sponsors with lots of recovery goodies after.

I wouldn't expect your zone's to be that much different than mine with only 5 years between us. Has me thinking mine aren't calculated correctly. Not to beat a dead horse but I read the articles you posted for me the other day. The one on the cycling mostly made sense but there was one part that didn't. He said that the reason your heart rate stays low on the bike is because you are not as strong on the bike as you are a runner (not referring to you but anyone in general). He said the better/stronger you get at riding the higher your heart rate will get. It seems backwards to me. Wouldn't you think the better shape you get in the lower your heart rate gets as it becomes stronger and more efficient?

Oh well, I went on the search for a book that explains this in more detail and I think I found a good one. I may order it tonight. It's called Total Heart Rate Training by Joe Friel.

I know they got a medal still and I was thinking how awful it would be to get so close to the final cutoff and not make it in time. I would be rethinking the whole race as to where I could have made up a few seconds here and there. It is cool to watch people cross the finish line. I always tell myself to hang around a race after I am done and watch people but I get caught up in the moment and I never do. I really should.

I don't think camp sounds dorky at all. We aren't in the 6th grade anymore where everyone gets made fun of for things they enjoy. There are way worse things in the world that taking care of yourself and being healthy and if a triathlon camp helps you do that then there is nothing wrong with that IMO. Congratulations to your Mum!

That's a nice medal. I may have to try this one next year. I just couldn't get over the price for a non-runDisney 1/2 marathon. Throw on top of that the parking in Boston. I might as well do a Disney race. :D

I volunteered at packet pickup Friday night and drove there after work, parking was $22!!

He means your maximum heart rate will increase as you learn to apply more power during your ride. You're right by saying your heart rate will be lower for a given effort, but as you become a stronger cyclist, your maximum potential will increase and thus your hear rate zones will rise too. For example, when I did my first FTP test in March, I could ride at 90% of my FTP with a low zone 4 heart rate. Now, after several months of hard cycling sets, I ride at the same 90% of my FTP with a high zone 3 heart rate. I've gotten better so I can hit the same effort with a lower heart rate as you suggested, but I should also change my zones to reflect my increase in potential as the article suggests.

I went to a novice tri camp the first weekend after I bought my bike and had a blast. All of us were new/struggling at one of the three sports which made for great opportunities to learn from each other as well as the coaches. I got just as much applause at the end of the weekend for being able to clip and unclip without falling over (which I did in the parking lot many times) as did the guy who pushed to complete one length of the pool.

Has anyone ever been to Vegas and found decent places to run?
We are staying on the strip in mid-July and won't have a car.
I know it will be hot and traffic is crazy 24/7 but the thought of spending time on the treadmill each morning is not appealing either.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

As others have stated, early morning Vegas runs are nice. It's interesting to see the streets empty and the cleanup taking place from the night before. I was there in February and was able to get in about a 7.3 mile run just by running from 1 end (we were on the South end of Vegas) up to Circus Circus and back. I'm pretty sure I could have done more mileage (and enjoyed the surroundings) if I had more time before my meetings that day. The scenery was entertaining because everything is bigger than life. There are some steps that need to be taken, but that just added to the workout. Because of that, don't expect to break any personal workout pace records... it can be pretty slow.

I actually happened upon a "running tour" while in Vegas. Well on this particular morning it was just the tourguide and only 1 guest... I did overhear him saying that 1 morning months before he had a huge group and he said it was awesome because he felt like they were overtaking the strip. Anways, I didn't realize what it was when I caught up to them and then passed them at a cross walk. But for about a mile, we were about the same pace and they were right behind me. It was interesting hearing about the history/landmarks of Las Vegas. I felt a *little* guilty getting this free info... but I was just running my pace on the strip and they were almost drafting off me... lol. Anyways, that's something I've never tried when traveling to another city but something interesting to maybe do down the road. If you've never heard of this, basically you can find running tourguides in several cities that you can schedule ahead and go running with as they provide information about your location. It seems like a pretty good idea for someone that wants to multitask while traveling. It also seems like a pretty interesting way for a good runner (that can run various paces) to earn extra money doing something they love.

We saw Mystere and it was good. It was the only Cirque show I'd ever paid to see. Years ago I was fortunate enough to see a free Cirque street performance that was performed several nights a week in Quebec City. That was amazing.

Catching up on a lot of posts from this weekend.

First and most importantly @Waiting2goback Just want to tell you that no matter what anyone else tells you, you are a beautiful human at this weight or a little more or a little less. And it is admirable that you want to make changes for your health. But if someone who is very negative to you makes you feel like you are not worthy at your current weight or a little less or a little more...I am here to tell you (as an internet stranger) that you are worthy and are perfect at this size (or a little less or a little more or a lot less or a lot more.) If you get the negative comments, feel free to let me know and I'll remind you that you are perfect at whatever weight you are at and that we believe in you to get to wherever you want to go from here :)

@LSUlakes Age group award!!! Woo Hoo. Give yourself a few extra exclamation points on the OP :)

I like the idea of running for someone...but I'm not attending WDW marathon weekend this year (tears.) But I will run for my mom this year when I do my hot chocolate 15k. She will be in Europe on a river cruise that weekend if her cancer treatments finish off as planned next month. She is kicking butt right now and we are 100% hopeful.

IT WAS HOT this weekend and HUMID! My hubby ran a 5k and they gave big bags of ice to all finishers and everyone appreciated it. He did not run as fast as he would have liked due to the heat. But earlier this weekend he did run a 5k out in the hood just as a training run and ran his fastest training 5k yet. I'm going to remind him he's perfect now, even though he is hard on himself and in the middle of his weight loss journey too :)

Oh I forgot to update everyone on my foot. My diagnosis is that it was just running too long in "shot shoes." I am 100% A-ok to run again at my normal training with "shoes with support and cushion!!" Resting it was what was needed and what I did. check and check
My Ghost 8's and I will be attempting my 5k this weekend. My running over the weekend went pain free and I don't expect to be as fast as I was before resting my foot for nearly a month. But have the green-light to cross the finish line at least :)

I think in about 3-4 months I am going to buy another pair of shoes (especially if I stalk a really good sale) and start being a responsible runner who rotates them in.

Excited that I do not have plantar fasciitis or anything serious.

Well, my May totals are in:

90 miles - average HR was 135 BPM, so I am keeping it slow and easy. My VO2 is up to 46, so continuing to improve there, too.

Wow, is it already the end of May??? How did that sneak up on me? Anyway...

May Training Update
Total Miles: 140.8 miles
Total Time: 20:52:06
Average Pace: 8:53/mi
Average HR: 143/min

What? No running planned for today? It's still May and I have to get my miles in today before I report out my totals!

:yay:I ran the Bolder Boulder yesterday in 1:05 to come in 15,732 out of 50,000. I was pleased with my results after a discouraging half at the beginning of the month. To put it in perspective, though, the elite male winner did it in 29:12 and the citizens race male did it in 30:34. Humans are amazing!

If you ever have a chance to run the Bolder Boulder, you should definitely do it. Good course, LOTS of entertainment (bands, belly dancers, gymnasts, DJ's, and more). The residents of Boulder come out in support with slip 'n' slides set up in the front yard and hoses spraying cool water. They drag out their couches to watch the race in their pajamas and hand out all kinds of snacks and drinks including Doritos, marshmallows, tequila, and beer. The finish line is in the University of Colorado football stadium. It's a great feeling to run in there with the stands full of cheering spectators. If you hang around in the stadium, you can watch the elites finish (they run after the citizens race) and see a great Memorial Day tribute with a military fly over.
