The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What are your top 5 Bucket List races in order of importance? They can be any distance for any reason.

1. Dopey '17 (because it's the big thing up next and staying healthy for it is the most important:)
2. MCM
3. (tie) New York/Chicago/Sedona
4. London
5. Boston w/ BQ

#3 Really don't have to be the marathons, necessarily. Could be the half. These are just the destinations I'd like to go to. The same could be said for London, as that's less about the race than it is about running overseas. Boston is at the bottom of that list because it's the least important. I may never get fast enough to do it, and that would be fine. If I ever did qualify, though, it would take a small army to keep me from it.

Honorable mentions: The inevitable Tokyo Disneyland Half Marathon, the Great Wall Marathon, and the Red Bull 400. (Look it up:)

ATTQOTD: I turn 50 in 2017, so I need goals, but I am also considering giving up marathons soon so this list could change.

1) Dopey, because I am registered for it again and I really need to finish it this time.
2) Pike's Peak Ascent
3) NYC Marathon
4) Marine Corps Marathon
5) Comrades

ATTTQOTD:

1. All the RunDisney halfs (left are Princess, both Star Wars (challenge medal me please), Tink, and W&D
2. Nike Women, preferably SF, but I think it's coming to LA this year, even though those hills scare me
3. Beach Cities Challenge (might be 2017) - (that's Surf City Half in Huntington Beach, OC half in Newport Beach, and Long Beach half in Long Beach)

Other than those, I am at a loss. I really don't think we have any cool ones out here in LA, other than the LA Marathon, which I'm not sure I will ever do a full. I may have to branch out eventually and visit some of these other ones you all are mentioning.

I also have some bucket list races that are no longer with us:

IN Memoriam:

TOT
Everest Challenge
Wine & Dine--the nighttime version!!!

I wanted to do Everest BADLY when I first started running. And that medal!! UGH. And the other two also seemed fun. I'm hopeful (naive maybe) that after the construction some of these will come back.

As far as safety goes, I just started running outside the confines of my complex and the "safest" place for me to run is this business/industrial complex. It's safe because there isn't a lot of traffic, but it's not really because it's pretty lonely out there other than when workers are coming or going for the day and trucks arriving and leaving. Smart locals use it as a shortcut to the main road, but it's pretty desolate. I am definitely concerned when I'm out there, but I like it so much better than my parking lot. I make sure I'm only there in daylight hours, but I do get paranoid when people are hanging out for no reason ...

So, does anyone experience panic attacks or little bouts of paranoia when they run?

I used to have BAD bouts of paranoia late last year when I was training for Dopey (mostly triggered by this story - not for the faint of heart - and the constant coverage of it: http://www.dallasnews.com/news/crim...ndom-on-white-rock-creek-trail-police-say.ece), and then I had a subtle panic attack in the corral the morning of the half marathon during Dopey ... but that was largely because I'd never done a large race at WDW before (both DLH and W&D pale in comparison to the Half), but I know that was largely due to just the sheer number of people and overall massiveness of everything.

Lately, I've been noticing I'm becoming a little more paranoid on my solo runs - especially when I don't take a dog with me. Like, I tend to notice cars I see more than once pass me during the two-mile loop I do in my neighborhood. Things like that.

Surely, I can't be the only one that feels this way from time-to-time, right?

I can't say I've ever felt in danger on a run and I run after dark quite often. I don't go to bad neighborhoods, I never wear headphones so I can hear cars or animals, and I try to avoid really busy roads but beyond that if its' my time to go it's my time to go. I am not going to let fear keep me from doing something I love.

I am not sure about Everest but I do think TOT will come back in some form once all the construction is done. It might not even be ToT themed but something Halloween. I also think at some point there will be another night time race. It may be W&D again (that's my hope), it may be the Halloween race in some form, it may be something else completely, but I think there will be another night race again at some point.

@mbwhitti and I are CONSTANTLY changing our list, but here's where it stands (currently ... I *think*):

1. Chicago Marathon (THIS YEAR! YAY!!)
2. Napa-to-Sonoma Half (hopefully in 2017)
3. Ragnar Relay (either SoCal or Austin ... hopefully in 2017 as well!) - or any relay, for that matter
4. Surf City Half/Marathon
5. Nike Women's Half

Also receiving votes: SeaWheeze Half, NYC Half and Marathon, Maui Half, Big Sur Marathon, Boston Marathon (Beth only, not me!)

That's a nice thing about the Garmins... you can have them vibrate instead of beep.

Do you find the vibrations effective? I tend to zone out when I run...I'd love this feature though; pretty sure I look dumb glancing at my wrist all the time for intervals.

Your not the only one, I get paranoid too. I will see someone coming at me and I'll hide my phone cause I swear they are going to rob me and it usually ends up being a kind elderly man. There is other times when I think a car is driving by a little too slow or gone by multiple times and I'll call DH until I think the danger has passed. It got really bad after a man came up to me in a parking lot while I was buckling my kids in and wouldn't leave me alone and another woman came up and stood with me until he left. DH wanted me to carry mace after that but I haven't gotten around to getting it yet.

Being aware and having options, like pepper spray, is a good thing. I would suggest if you get serious about carrying pepper spray that you take a course on it's use. I spent six years in law enforcement and we trained for the use of pepper spray. You really want to make sure that the spray goes on the bad guy and not you! We all got some unintentionally at some point and off course did the whole get sprayed in the face in the academy - it is horrible!!!!

Safe and aware running to everyone!

Once in a while I zone out and miss one but usually only when it's cold or if something else was happening when it went off. Like I think I missed one this weekend when I was doing a road crossing and there was some confusion. When it's cold, if my wrist gets too cold, then sometimes I don't feel it. But I'm talking like 20-30 degree temps and I didn't wear enough layers or something and my wrist is too exposed.

Couple of people have mentioned Ragnars - sounds like we need a DisBoards Ragnar team.

Count me in. I haven't done one in a few years and would like to do one I haven't done before.

SO JEALOUS.

I had planned to run TIR this year with friends for my birthday before I got hurt in February, and then of course Ragnar Austin was the weekend after my birthday when @mbwhitti was here and we pretty much committed to doing one (or more!) of the relays next year ... probably Austin because it's easiest, but SoCal looked amazing! Same with the Keys!

My friend in Chicago tried to talk me into joining his last-minute team next month, but that's gonna be a no-go ... and that makes me SO sad.

And we can give @CheapRunnerMike the longest legs!

As resident Night Owl, I already told my friends that I would take whatever allowed me to run between Midnight and four a.m.

Ragnar pretty much structures what legs each runner runs, apparently - TIR (Texas Independence Relay) let's you choose what runners run what legs, so that's pretty cool.
