The Running Thread - 2016

Well May is just full of random celebrations. So I will try to keep it somewhat running related.

QOTD: Its Cinco de Mayo! How many miles will you have to run to burn of the Mexican food and drinks that you may consume today?

ATTQOTD: I'm afraid I wont be able to partake in this years activities, between work and having a little one I may get some chips and salsa so maybe 3-4 miles.

Sorry the QOTD are a bit weak lately.

For those running the Chevron Houston Marathon, registration is open today!

It's hard to get an accurate calorie count on Mexican food and today is a "food cube" day at work celebrating May birthdays, so I'm going to have to ballpark it and say somewhere around 357.2 miles.

@GreatLakes You were at the Pig? Forgive me if I knew that and had forgot. Love to hear your thoughts on the half course since one day maybe I will do that one. Is it just as bridge/hilly as the 10k...or more-so? What pig pen were you in for the 10k...I was at the very back of C. Wondering if we ever crossed paths :)
Edited to add...how did it work for you with the 10k followed by the 5k? I almost did that and then kind of glad I didn't.

My Aunt is pushing for me to try the Cincinnati Queen Bee half marathon which is a women-themed race in October. Maybe one year I'll try that too.

@roxymama I was in pig pen A for all 3 races. It was a different experience doing the two races so close together. I have done two races on the same day before but it was always a morning and evening run. I've also done back to back 5K's and halves over a weekend but this was the first time I did a 10K, 5K, and Half. I did have a little under an hour and twenty minutes between the two races on Saturday and took it pretty easy the rest of that day to try and be prepared for the half.

As for the course, the half was a lot hillier than the Saturday races. I put the three elevation graphs from Garmin Connect below. Estimating my effort and knowing exactly how my race times would be affected by the three races in close proximity was kind of an unknown. I decided that the race I would run the hardest was the 10K since it was first and a distance I really like. I decided I would run by feel for the beginning of each race and decide on a goal time around mile 4 for the 10K, 1.5 for the 5K, and 8 for the half. I knew I would be slow on Sunday but absolutely didn't want to go over 1:40 for the half. That was really my only time goal going into the weekend and I managed to come in just under 1:39 so I was happy with that considering the course and the miles the day before. The other races I managed to come in under the goal I set for myself mid-race and I did pretty well in the 3-way placings so I am really happy about my entire weekend of running. The first 5 miles of the half were actually the hardest despite it not being the really hilly part of the course. I think I just had to run the fatigue out of my legs and once I hit that big incline you see in the graph at mile 5 I felt like the legs were ready to push a bit. The hardest stretch of the entire weekend for me was that small hump you see just after 1.5 in the 5K. It was when we turned up Broadway and it dropped my pace a lot. It took me a good half mile to get it back and I felt it the rest of the way.

The entire weekend really is a great time. The weather put a little damper on the Saturday feel of the city but it really is an event the entire city gets behind even if they aren't running. I have friends who live down there and others that are from there and even if they don't run they have been involved in one way or another in the weekend.

No chips & salsa over here, but we are making fajitas for dinner tonight. I think my run this morning and my 3-hour bike/1-hour run tomorrow ought to be more than enough to burn those calories. If we could get decent tequila, that'd be a different story altogether.

I won't be taking part in Cinco de Mayo festivities. I don't know if I'll get a run in today or not either I've just been so busy lately and the weather has been kind of crappy. Once school ends I'll be in full training mode though.

Our weather in south Louisiana has been amazing! Upper 50's in the morning and highs in the upper 70's. Really unheard of for this time of year. Its likely this will be our last week of pleasant temps until October.

@GreatLakes I wasn't in your corral but we did walk past it on the way to ours, so maybe I did see you :)
That elevation chart for the half is YOWZA! But I kind of had a feeling based on what I was seeing on the full marathon course on tv.
It is too bad about the weather Sunday morning as I think my whole family would have gone down there to cheer everyone on if the weather was nicer...instead we ate Bacon waffles at a place called Sugar N Spice diner.
Congrats on the three runs though! Awesome that you beat your goal time, too!

ATTQOTD: My parents are coming over tonight to play with my kiddo and have dinner. I was campaigning for me making enchiladas but my mom is not a fan of Mexican food so I'm going to have to post-pone my fiesta to this weekend. I'm currently drinking a bottled starbucks frappucino for the first time in years, so probably by next Cinco de Mayo I will have burned this thing off. Veggies and salad for lunch though!

We will get a day at 70 then it will go back to 40, then slowly creep back to 70 before repeating the cycle. Then throw some rain in there as well.

ATTQOTD: Nothing special for me today, but we too have had great weather here in South Central Texas so I'm hoping I'll get in a good run today.

For those running the Chevron Houston Marathon, registration is open today!

Thanks for the reminder, I'll update once my registration is "official". I forgot where in my backyard I buried my race money coffee can. Once I find it I'll get registered!

Nothing planned for Cinco de Mayo. As for weather, it's raining here and I have a trail race Saturday. Looks like it could be a muddy one.

Ours here in central Arkansas has been too! Not looking forward to the normal weather, lol!
Just for fun, I went on Accuweather and looked at the predicted weather in Millington TN for the Navy 10 NM race next month - High of 90 with overnight low the night before of 69!:eek::eek:

ATTQOTD: I'm battling multiple over-use injuries, but this is my taper week anyways. Maybe just 1-3 miles today. Just wondering if I should do a speed workout but it might aggravate/worsen my injuries ... Decisions decisions!

No Cinco de Mayo plans here.

Also, on the weather note it's been pretty great here in Minnesota. Mid-40s in the morning and mid-60s in the afternoon, though it is slowly getting warmer.

The weather in NH has been miserable the last week or so... it is in the 40's and ranging between downpour and drizzle. :( The long range forecast for my half next Saturday is looking ok, 50's and clear before clouding up and raining in the afternoon, but of course it's 9 days away, so it could change 9 times. :)

I am planning to do ~2.7 miles today (well I'm planning to run a certain route and that's how long it is, not that I'm planning to run that specific distance :) ). Still debating what to do this weekend. I had planned originally to do 11 miles, and then my half is the week after, but I'm thinking I should go shorter, like 6-7, and let my achy achilles heal up some more. But then I'll be going into the race with only a 10 miler 3 weeks out from it.

Totally forgot it was Cinco de Mayo today and had Mexican food last night! But my mom did make a big bowl of homemade salsa so I'm sure I will still have that with dinner. 3 miles scheduled for today. :)

Taper week because of an upcoming race or taper week because of the periodization of your training cycle? In either case my answer would probably be the same but the reason would be different. I would suggest not doing the speed work and running for the equivalent length of time at an easy pace. Maintains the fitness gained but reduces the chance of further injury.

My reasoning:
If taper because race upcoming, then physical gains from workouts are limited within 10 days of race day.
If taper because of periodization, then might as well reduce the chance this injury becomes worse so it doesn't effect future workouts as much.

QOTD: It was an epic struggle to get out of bed this morning, so I only got in a slow 3 miles, which isn't going to put much of a dent in any Mexican food I may consume today.

@LSUlakes I have a few races to add:

July 16 - michigandergirl - Rock N Roll Remix Challenge 5K - NG
July 17 - michigandergirl - Rock N Roll Remix Challenge 10K - NG
Aug 20 - michigandergirl - Mitchell's Run 5K - sub 28:00
Sept 18 - michigandergirl - Lake MI Credit Union Bridge Run 10 Miler - sub 1:48
