The Running Thread - 2016

About the shoes...I go up two sizes. For me it isn't just about length but having the toe box wide enough for my foot to move around. And often my normal size has the arch in the wrong spot for my foot. If I can feel the arch, it will bug me. It took me trying on hundreds of shoes to find a salesperson who understood and sized me up!

I wear a woman's wide, which is hard to find, and I don't really want to just wear men's shoes. They're not cute. ;) I was really happy to find that Altras work for me. The toe box is HUUUUGE.

This. Me. Yes. I have not bought Altra's but was impressed with the wide toe box. I'm on a wide-width New Balance 1260v5 and they are the widest shoe I've ever found!

Has anyone done gasparilla, in Tampa? I'm considering it but don't know if I'm up for the half. Maybe 15k. I've never gone that distance before!

QOTD: What is your 'gotta have it' nightly sleep regimen? How little sleep does it take before you know things are not going to go well the next day?

What is this sleep you are talking about???

I wish I could sleep a night straight thru. Lucky if I am out for more than 3 hours at a time. For RunDisney events if I get 2 hours that is good. I have thought about closing the park that has the EMH and go straight to the Corrals.

I was almost 100% I was going to sign up for the Michelob Ultra challenge in Gasparilla but now I'm reconsidering it.The Michelob ultra challenge is running all 4 races in 2 days, the 15k and 5k on Saturday and the half and the 8k on Sunday. After looking at the courses for all the races it seems like they all run pretty much the same course with the half obviously adding another area.As cool as the idea of running 4 races in 2 days was my enthusiasm has waned after seeing how its running the same street over and over.Another reason I might skip it is that its a week after the Ft.Lauderdale A1A half that I ran last year and really enjoyed.I'm still unsure what race I'll end up doing, since I signed up for the Orlando Best Damn race half a week after Gasparilla I think I'm going to stick with the FTL race, the timing seems better for my race schedule.Gasparilla however seems like a race that has a lot of support with many sponsors so even if I skip it I definitely have to do it in the next couple of years.

Ah that might be TMI for a Disney running thread. :rolleyes1pirate:
Lol.

But, really, I never sleep. Like hardly ever. Not well anyways. It stinks. Anything less than 5 or 6 hours and I'll be restless and grumpy the next morning.

That's not very Disney Princess-like of me. Lol.

I usually run on about 6-6.5 hours of sleep. Though every few weeks I'll completely crash and sleep for 8+ hours. I know I should be more consistent, but that hardly works now and definitely won't work in just over a month when my son arrives.

I was able to try on the shoes I'm thinking of ordering in the size I wear normally, they felt a bit snug so I have a good idea of what I need. Based on everyone's answers I'm going to try a 1/2 size up either from Zappos so I can return them easily or see if I can do what @keahgirl8 suggested and see if my local running store can order them.

I'd really suggest that. Then you can actually run in them and still return them. A good running store will let you do that anyway.

I thought of something else: could be hip bursitis. It occurred to me yesterday after my long run and my hip started hurting... Seriously? I didn't know you could catch things on the disboards!

Lots of info online about it. Painful and irritating, but minor. It just takes the usual strengthening of the hips and, get this, stretching the IT band.

I have bursitis and ITB Syndrome. I am starting on year 2 of it. I may be patient zero.

I prefer 8, but I usually get around 6 or 7 if I'm lucky.

Same here! I'm in bed for 8 hours but I wake up several times a night. Looking at my Fitbit, I spend a lot of time being restless. If it isn't my husband's snoring, it is my small bladder.

I had both last summer. Happened when I tried to ramp up too hard and too fast after a 6 week complete exercise hiatus following an abdominal surgery. It is a rough combination. It required an unusual amount of patience for me and really sticking to my PT work faithfully. I hope you heal up soon!

Did a sleep study once and I only slept 3 hours. REM sleep was only 18 minutes. Need at least a few hours of that to be good.

Yes, NB was the one brand that it was easier to find wide widths in (and to be honest, my wide pair was actually a little too wide!), but unfortunately the ones I tried didn't really work for me running-wise. I was running in a pair of 1080v3's. I found the sole to be too flexible. I had the same problem with Asics Nimbus (where only like 1-2 colors came in wide). I wear the Olympus in Altras, mainly because they were on deep discount vs the Paradigm and I was just trying them out (the Olympus are in their trail shoe category but are classified as road/trail, while the Paradigm are the road only ones), and I love the big thick firm sole.

I have been looking at Altras due to width. I wear NB and Asics now--did you find it hard to go from 8-9mm drop from heel to toe in the NB to the 0 drop in the Altras?

I didn't... and I was actually going from the Asics to the Altras. The Nimbus 17 is a 12.5mm drop, so that was quite the difference. I was not very good about gradually easing into them, either... I just started running in them full time after Tink last year. I waited until Tink was done to make the switch.

I did have experience in minimal shoes, though. At the time I was doing step aerobics for cross training in NB Ionix 3090v2's and also wore them casually a lot, and they were very minimal shoes with only a 4mm drop. My calves were a little more tired the first couple runs, but nothing super noticeable.

Thanks! I didn't do enough cross training before last year's GSC, so long story short, here I am! Working through it.

Regarding my iPhone case question, maybe I don't need to worry about the sweat and rain so much? :) While I was googling, trying to find case recommendations, I came across this article: Apple’s Clever Tech Makes the iPhone 6s Nearly Waterproof.

I have a 5s. I have the Otterbox Commuter case with Alpha Glass. I've never submerged it in water, but sweat and a little bit of rain seems fine. I put it in a ziploc bag if I'm really worried about it getting too wet.

QOTD: Its May 4th. Which Star Wars film will you be watching today?

ATTQOTD: Since we moved in over the weekend, its been non stop and I haven't watched more than 10 minutes of TV. Tonight will be no different so unfortunately no movie for me tonight.

Unfortunately I won't get a chance to watch the movies since we are flying out to DL today but we are headed to the Disney Store now to get the pin and see what special activities they have going on today.
