The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: I wear Sparkle Skirts when I run, whether it is a race or training, because I love the pockets for all my stuff. I hate tights underneath, so unless it is freezing I leave my legs bare and wear a running hoodie or jacket I can tie around my waist. But for anything longer than a 10k I will wear arm sleeves that I can stick in my pocket because things tied around my waist tend to annoy me after a while. I am all about comfort while looking nice! :)

QOTD: Does your clothing choice differ for racing and training? i.e. Do you always race in shorts, yet dress more for the elements on training runs? Do you choose something less worn out because there are thousands of strangers in view?

Nope, I wear pretty much the same stuff. I do have a few favorite race shirts, but other than that and the sometimes addition of my red sparkle skirt, I train and race in the same gear.

ATTQOTD: I have not had a competition for money or anything of value.

Can you please add another race for me:

November 13 Mommaoffherrocker Rock and Roll Half Marathon - Las Vegas (NG / N/A)

Thanks!

I'm planning on doing the RnR Vegas Half as well :)

I generally wear the same clothes for a race as I will for training runs. I will dress a bit cooler for a race as I know I plan to run at a faster pace than a typical long run pace.

ATTQOTD: Yes a bit different for some races. Most particularly for Disney races. I don't do costumes per se, but we have always bought custom t-shirts with graphics on them for the race. Local races I don't really dress much differently although I try to wear something that looks good. On regular morning training runs I'm less concerned about things "matching". But, I'll admit that a big portion of what I enjoy about running is buying cute running clothes. I'm shallow that way. :)

I, too, am shallow that way! :)

Love this thread! I started running 3 years ago this month. My runnerversary is coming up on the 24th. I think I'll celebrate by knocking out 20 miles. It will be the first time to run that distance since my first marathon last November. I just ran in the Monument Ave 10k with a group called Inclusive Racing. I helped push a disabled athlete in an adaptive stroller. I love running with IR. The next race I'm signed up for is the Richmond Marathon on November 12 this year. No official goal yet. I secretly want to get under 4 hours, but I'm training on my own this year (last year I was on the training team). I'm a little nervous about how well I will do without the team training aspect.

Thanks for joining in! If you have any other races that you would like me to add to the OP let me know. If you have a goal for the race, please include that information as well. Congrats on the soon to be run anniversary! Thanks again.

We have a large group of forum members running at least one of the Disney races this weekend. I saw the medals for the first time and have to say I am jealous! Looks like yall are going to have better weather for the weekend than we had for marathon weekend!

Good luck to all!

For a race, I pick from the same pile as my training gear, but I do usually pick a favorite at the time, and I always wear as little as possible during a race because I know I will heat up once the race starts. On cold/cooler race days, this usually means that I will be slightly uncomfortable as I wait for the start but fine after the first half mile or so. I do hate being cold, so it can be a very fine line. For training runs, I wear whatever is appropriate such that I am comfortable given the weather conditions. Also, like @CheapRunnerMike, regardless of what I am wearing on the rest of my body, I oftentimes have gloves on if it's 40°F or less. My hands must have horrible circulation.

I think it depends on the elements. Running in Wisconsin is different than running in Florida except for marathon weekend 2015 that was cold. Also with Disney races costumes are big so clothing sometime goes along with that which I wouldn't wear a costume for every training run of course.

I am like most who have already replied - I wear the same clothing for races as I wear for training runs, and I always dress based on weather conditions. The one exception is a potential extra layer of clothing or a rain barrier for races that goes in a trash or donation bin, required because of the long waits between the time that I leave my car and the time that the actual race begins.

I do not wear costumes in Disney races, so no difference there.

I am so jealous of those medals. I was planning on doing this race next year, but it falls at the end of easter week. Too crowded in the parks for me.

ATTQOTD: For Disney races, I pull together some sort of theme/costume, but I use the same running clothes I train in: Sparkle Skirts and a singlet for warm weather, capris or tights with short sleeves (plus long sleeves if needed) for cool weather.

I don't know how people can run in shorts or singlets when it's in the 20's or low 30's. I guess I just don't run fast enough to get heated up enough. :) I ran a 5K in February that was windy and in the 30's and I was freezing the whole race, but when I saw the leaders coming back (it was an out and back), the guy in second place was wearing nothing but racing flats, shorty-shorts (the real thin racing shorts with the split up the side), and some throwaway gloves. And a long ZZ Top beard I guess keeping his face warm. :D No shirt or socks or anything else.

After being away for about a month (due to vacation and work travel), I am back. I've missed too much to go back and look through all the QOTD's, so I'll just start back by answering today's QOTD. Sometimes I will buy a new shirt a month or so before a race, but I ALWAYS wear something that I've at least trained in a couple of times. No way would I ever chance running a race with something brand new on.

I train and race in whatever is comfortable for the weather. So, shorts when it's hot. Tights when it's cold. Capris when I can't make up my mind (woman probs). The only constant is that I try to wear my favorite color in some form on race day. There will typically be orange on me in some fashion whether it's my shirt, shoes or headband. If you didn't already know, orange makes you run faster :)

I tend to make sure I match/color coordinate.. And I like sparkly skirts for races but never for training..

ATTQOTD: Yes my choices are different. For a weekend long run I will just run in any running shirt I have, but on race day I normally run in a singlet. I do a few training runs in a singlet, just to make sure there isn't any issues. I have never ran with any sort of long pants, because it just doesn't cold enough for me to do so here.

My racing career is just beginning really so I don't have much experience. I probably won't wear anything different for racing vs training. Living in Minnesota I definitely have a lot of cold weather gear, but the amount of the gear I wear would definitely be less on a race day as opposed to just training. And like a few others have mentioned, gloves tend to stay on a bit longer than most other cold weather gear.

ATTQOTD: For races I like to match and wear my most favorite/comfy outfit for the weather. I love running in costume as long as it's functional and appropriate, like Disney. My weekday runs however are mostly in the early morning darkness so anything goes. One might say I even look a bit Punky Brewster-ish (ok, I may be dating myself here)!
