The Running Thread - 2016

Nope it's all been for bragging rights. At this stage of the game for me running races only results in an outflow of money.

I did my first ultra this weekend. It was a 50k trail race over fairly rooty, rocky and technical terrain. Lots of weaving through trees and a lot of short steep up and down hills. Wound up picking up a couple trail buddies during the race who ran with my friend Neal and I for the second half of the race. I don't feel too bad today, but it makes me wonder how people do trail 100 milers.

Congrats! Which one did you do?

I am afraid to try a trail race at all. I am afraid to get injured on some roots or a rock or something. Congrats on your accomplishment!

QOTD: I have never been a part of anything for money when it comes to running.

Motivation question: I just force myself to do what I need to do. I know logically that I need to do it and I convince myself to do the scheduled workout. I didn't want to do my P90X workout when I got home from work tonight but I was afraid if I didn't do it then skipping one day would turn into 2, 3, 4 and more days skipped like it did all last summer with cross training. So at 9pm I changed into my workout clothes and went down stairs and did my workout. I was tired but I did the best I could and mentally I feel better. I know I didn't take the easy road tonight.

I would say you should follow the other people's advice and sign up for some races that are closer on the calendar then make a training schedule and just follow it the first 2 weeks whether you are motivated or not and eventually things will get easier.

QOTD: Have you ever had a friendly running competition with money on the line? (Or something of value)

Love the accountability agreement with a payment pot you created, that was clever. I can not think of a time I put money on the line with running. While in high school during a camping trip to Yosemite with track friends we turned our hike into a challenge of who could top out on half dome and get back down to the camp ground (about 18 miles round trip) the fastest. Last person had to do dishes for the rest of the week. This was not climbing half dome but going up the trail and then the cables on the back side to get to the top. Sadly I was not first, but happily I was not last either!

Congrats on completing an ultra!

Like Tony says, "Do your best and forget the rest"!

QOTD: Does your clothing choice differ for racing and training? i.e. Do you always race in shorts, yet dress more for the elements on training runs? Do you choose something less worn out because there are thousands of strangers in view?

ATTQOTD: Yes my choices are different. For a weekend long run I will just run in any running shirt I have, but on race day I normally run in a singlet. I do a few training runs in a singlet, just to make sure there isn't any issues. I have never ran with any sort of long pants, because it just doesn't cold enough for me to do so here.

ATTQOD: I guess it depends on the weather. My singlet temp cutoff is 40 and my shorts cutoff temp is 30. I guess if it were just below that threshold for a race, I might be willing to dress lighter. I've definitely been given some odd looks when I show up to a race in a singlet and shorts when it's cold out (like Disney Marathon Weekend 2015). Otherwise if it's above 40, then I'm always in singlet and shorts whether it be training or race day. I do have some premium singlets, shorts, and pants that I do tend to gravitate to when it comes to race day.

I always dress for the elements regardless of race or training. I'm not fast enough to really consider myself a racer so I'm not necessarily looking for every little advantage in my race gear. As far as clothing goes my goal is to come out of any run with no chaffing or blisters and with my body temperature regulated well for the conditions. Whatever I think will get me to that result is fair game.

I have never known any strangers to be less impressed or more impressed by me as a result of the newness of my running gear. I'm pretty sure I go relatively unnoticed regardless of what I am wearing.

ATTQOTD: I train and race in what's appropriate for the weather. I will probably spend more time picking out something pretty for a race if it's going to be warmer, and I have a chance to wear my Sparkle Skirts and make a cute shirt/skirt combo. :) Where a training run might just be the first shirt that is clean...ish. ;) I don't really like to wear my skirts over tights like some do. I tried it last fall for a half, and they slid down a lot. So when it's colder I just wear black capris (or thermal long tights in mid-winter) and everything goes with those.

I am also not fast enough for my clothes to make a single bit of difference in my results, so I just dress for what's comfortable. :)

ATTQOTD: Yes a bit different for some races. Most particularly for Disney races. I don't do costumes per se, but we have always bought custom t-shirts with graphics on them for the race. Local races I don't really dress much differently although I try to wear something that looks good. On regular morning training runs I'm less concerned about things "matching". But, I'll admit that a big portion of what I enjoy about running is buying cute running clothes. I'm shallow that way. :)

ATTQOTD: Not really. I dress mostly according to the weather. Like a few others have said, I am not looking for a competitive advantage from my clothes, just comfort and lack of chafing/blisters. I have some favorite running capris I will wear for races if I can because they have lots of pockets that hold my phone, fuel, id, etc. But I've had races in the single digits that I had to dress warmer and its not a big deal to me. For Disney races I do not wear costumes per se, but will wear themed clothes. For instance in for PHM 2015 I had a white running skirt, white tank, and my hair in two buns like Princess Leia.

ATTQOTD: No difference in clothes choice between races and training. Like everyone else, weather may change something but I will almost always go with shorts as opposed to tights. Really was close though for NYC half in March. Primarily just what is most comfortable for me though.

I will always wear shorts on race day, even if temperatures are below freezing. I usually go with a singlet as well and add arm sleeves if it is still cold. I find that race pace gets me warmed up within the first kilometre or so no matter how cool it is. I will wear gloves though, even if they are just throwaway ones...my hands are always cold.

ATTQOTD: I have not had a competition for money or anything of value.

Can you please add another race for me:

November 13 Mommaoffherrocker Rock and Roll Half Marathon - Las Vegas (NG / N/A)

Thanks!

This race intrigues me for 2017 because I want an excuse to go to Vegas. I will try to remember to notice in November you running it so I can grill you for how it went :)

ATTQOTD: Long tights and pullover if it's 30 and under. With the ability to de-layer mid-run. I definitely will dress warmer in winter training than at a race. When I run at home I tend not to care about matching and just pull from the top of my clean stuff. At races I try to resemble a human with color-coordinating skills as much as possible :)
I've only dressed in "costume" a couple of times by wearing sparkle athletic skirts. Minnie mouse for disney, bright pink for a candy themed race and orange for a Chicago race (Go Bears.) But no one would have even noticed it as a costume as it was just with my regular old shirts and shorts. Oh and I dressed as Ditka during the Ditka Dash along with all the other thousands of Ditkas (aviators, mustache, tech "sweater".)

(I like clothes)
