The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

I don't have a ton of free time outside of work and running, but I like to garden. I spent a good portion of Saturday clearing my yard and cleaning up my garden to be ready to plant in a couple weeks. I don't do flowers, it's mainly heirloom tomatoes and fruits and vegetables. I put in a blackberry and raspberry bush (tiny little plants) a few years ago and now they threaten to take over my entire garden space every year. I filled almost an entire truck bed with cutback off of the plants this year. The garden also influences me to have a healthier diet in the summer.

I also love to play golf, but it happens so sparingly that I can't really call it a hobby.

My other hobbies include soccer, including watching the EPL, playing, and reffing, as well as going to movies with my wife, though soon we won't be able to do that as much anymore once our son arrives.

Congrats on the baby! My daughter is now a little over 2. In the last 2 years, we have been to the movies once. So, on top of seeing as many movies as you can for the time being, sleep in as often as you can. Just like when you finish a marathon, when you have a baby your life is changed. It's a good thing.

ATTQOTD: Hobbies...Before kiddo was born I was a dancer and dance teacher and helped with a competitive dance team. I'd like to get back into that when she is older. My family are season ticket holders to the Joffrey Ballet and to the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team. So our hobby is watching things?! I also love cooking and now that kiddo is old enough to sit at the kitchen table after school to play, I have been cooking some major dinners and enjoying it. Is shopping a hobby? I'm a bit obsessed with makeup and I don't want to talk about the size of my collection....I watch youtubes a bit too often and practice at home. Though I wear zero makeup while running :)

Sleeping in isn't much of an option already. I have two pugs that make sure I don't do that, but thanks. We're excited though not sure we're completely ready for the change, but who is really?

And following your beloved Barcelona team, though I'm sure El Clasico didn't quite go the way you had hoped. :charac2:

I should add that you will get a whole new group of hobbies that are wonderful, like walking around the mall or outside with a stroller while the kiddo sleeps, taking a thousand pictures on a daily basis, finding new and exciting ways to store all the toys that family and friends will bring on a near constant basis, learning how to make inanimate objects talk and dance, rocking in a chair, doing laps around the house while bouncing up and down, and thousands of minutes squishing chubby cheeks and legs. But my favorite hobby...pretending you have to go to the bathroom and hiding in there while reading disboards, so that your spouse has to change a diaper/calm the kiddo/etc etc.

I wasn't surprised or particularly upset at the result. The team has always been more susceptible than most to the FIFA virus and I thought, at the time, their focus was much more toward Atletico and the Champions League. It took Fernando Torres to kind of shake them out of their malaise, but hopefully they are back on track. The number of games and competitions they are involved in is starting to catch up to them, but the squad has a bit more depth than the last few years so they are more equipped to handle it. Selfishly, even though I strongly disagree with the FIFA rule that has brought it on, I hope Madrid and Atletico get to learn what it's like not to be able to augment your squad for two transfer windows.

ATTQOTD: Video games. :o SO and I are also hoping to get back into hiking this year and maybe dog agility.

Our old boy passed away last December at age 13, and he hadn't really been up for hiking or long distance walking in a long while. We just adopted a new older puppy about 6 weeks ago. She is just over 9 months old now. Little Miss Penny is a handful and a half... a little bit unexpectedly. :) She was so sweet and calm and docile when we got her, but now that she's getting over a mite infestation, giardia, and whipworm (she came from a shelter in the South and she was seized from her house before going to that shelter), it is like whoa, her energy level is through the roof. We did a doggy DNA test on her, and she's an Australian Cattle Dog mix... maybe not a breed we would have chosen on purpose, but she is what she is and we will do our best to meet her energy needs. :)

Related to running, I'm looking forward to maybe running with her, too. I know I'm supposed to wait until she's a year or so for her joints, so maybe I'll start trying this fall, rather than in the summer heat. I do Galloway intervals though (90/30), and when she starts running she wants to GO, so I'm not sure how it will work out. :)

I'm already a pro at the hiding in the bathroom maneuver, and yes there are definitely a whole array of new hobbies we'll find. I'm just glad my parents live in Florida while we live in Minnesota so I don't have to deal with them trying to come over every day. But hey, at least my kid will get to go to Disney more than most kids due to that, so it's not all bad.

It took Torres getting booted and Suarez getting lucky to not be booted to get you that win yesterday. But I suppose I shouldn't talk too much smack as Barca is still doing way better than my Manchester United team.

Also baseball! HUGE SF Giants fan! I watch every game and manage to get to a couple when they play the Rockies as DD26 lives in Colorado. We plan my trips to visit her around the Giants playing the Rockies. This year my first marathon is on Labor Day and the Giants will be there Mon, Tue, Wed that week. I think I will be walking very slowly around the ballpark! :)

Yes! Big baseball fan here too! I used to follow a lot of sports but now there just doesn't seem to be time for it...but I still get to watch my Detroit Tigers. I had also liked the Giants as my National League team since I was a kid back in the Will Clark days...the 2012 World Series changed that though, so can't side with you anymore @Dis5150 :)

I agree, I don't think anything can prepare you for it. The first few weeks are the most challenging as everyone is trying to adjust. It is also so much fun. As another poster mentioned, the toys get out of control very fast. People gave DD toys for a 4 year old when she was 4 months old. Our current living room, is a big toy room. We are moving in a few weeks, and that situation should change. The real question is, have you purchased a jogging / running stroller yet?

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

Well I am on the boards constantly with being a moderator. I also love Christmas lights so I do a show with just over 10,000 lights. I played football since I was in 5th grade and this will be the first year I won't be because I'll be in college. Other than that I love watching sports and being involved in sports. My dad and grandpa are both coaches so I will help them out.

I believe a true whoopie pie is a new england thing. I haven't had a decent one since leaving Maine. I have tried to make my own but could never get that puffiness it is supposed to have. Mine always fell flat and looked more like a cookie. I suspect the magical ingredient is lard!

I think it is a Northern thing, but it's also a very Pennsylvania Amish thing! Wowzers, the Amish around these parts where my parents live make some killer whoopie pies.

I've never found a decent one south of the Mason-Dixon Line. :D

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

Watching Netflix which doesn't work so well with the running (especially when I have no space in my tiny flat for a treadmill). I have got into cooking recently (always been into baking) from scratch. I have others things I love to do but at the moment with my work schedule it's pretty much split into cooking, Netflix and training for the Disney Paris Half.

I concur with this. I'm not sure I've actually seen our carpet in weeks. SO MANY TOYS! It's like a plastic jungle in the living room, or the play room, or the dining room, or her bedroom, or in the basement, or in the garage. They're everywhere! She is such a Disney girl because she can tell you every character these represent, but not the actual letter. :earboy2: She did it without prompting.

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

Well, when time allows I'm a water sports person. Paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling. Anything to be in or around the salt water and the beach! I also like fishing.
I would say hiking is way up on my list too.
I've found I have a hard time sitting still for any indoor hobbies, except for painting. I'm pretty much down for anything adventurous! Adventure is my hobby!

And for the QOTD yesterday.....no other runners in my family. Truly a bummer. Although, my DS9 has shown much interest in running. He is doing the Wine & Dine holiday 5K with me and wants to do more races with me so that's awesome! He also told me the Dopey Challenge is on his wish list! Not a bad goal to work towards when he turns 14!

Thankfully, both my boys share my sense of adventure! Everyone else in my family is boring. Lol.

Great QOTD! I like seeing what other people are up to :) I like cooking (I never thought of it as a hobby before) and photography, though I haven't had as much dedicated time for it recently.

I also enjoy a vegetable garden, but with the move this year it will be to late to plant anything.

I don't have a ton of free time outside of work and running, but I like to garden. I tried to grow a vegetable garden a couple years ago but most of the veggies got eaten by things other than us :( I haven't tried since then. Any tips on keeping deer and bunnies (the prime suspects) away?

My living room is already a big toy room. Our dogs have way too many toys. Oh and they already think some of the baby toys are theirs too. It will be an interesting battle.

No jogging stroller. Most of my running is done on the side of the road with little or no shoulder. I definitely don't feel safe taking him on runs there.

I know our son will be probably be a total Disney junkie, considering both of his parents are, no matter how much my wife tries to deny she is, and that one set of grandparents lives less than an hour from WDW.
