The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What do you for a living to support your running habits?

Well, by career I am a rehabilitation/wellness coordinator, but currently relocating to Winter Park so looking for a new job. I'm also a massage therapist and a chiropractic assistant.

Registration fees for some races (*cough RunDisney) can def add up!! And that's not even including running gear and what not. So this year I've decided to register for the Disney races through charities! Depending on the charity, it helps on the registration fees, and it's encouraging to raise money and give back!

I have the Garmin 225. I can set pace alerts that make my watch beep and vibrate if I go above or below a threshold I set. I only have the low pace set, because I have been taking walk breaks occasionally since my knee issues at PHM.
The entry on the 225 for the pace alert is Menu -> Settings -> Activity Settings -> Alerts -> Pace -> Then you set Fast Alert and Slow Alert.

I find it helpful, and getting that feature (plus wrist based heart rate) was the main reason I went from the 210 to the 225.

An alternate way to manage pacing with a Garmin is to set up the auto-lap feature. Depending on my distance I set it to auto-lap every 1/4 or 1/2 mile. I use the lap time to determine where I am relative to my pacing goal and adjust up or down accordingly. I prefer that to the pace alerts as it smooths the individual spikes or valleys associated with hills or traffic (either vehicular or race congestion) and gives a better overall picture as to how things are going.

Some very interesting jobs yall have. A lot more folks in IT than I would have thought.

@LSUlakes, Go Hogs!!!! I am enjoying the SEC Network and the ability to watch SEC baseball through the ESPN apps. SEC baseball is consistently strong, and fun to watch.
The SEC network is very nice to have for baseball season. How are the hogs looking in baseball this year? I've been to depressed about our 2-4 SEC record to look past this upcoming weekend.

Atqod: I make a line of home decor and hair accessories that I sell on etsy and in shops. I quit my job as a personal assistant when my kiddo was born and was looking for a way to work for myself. I started my business when my husband was deployed. Lol! It doesn't cover my running expenses but it does pay for my Starbucks addiction and my pedicures. It did buy my costume for princess this year! My husband supports my running and most of the expenses because he knows a healthy wife means he eats well for a few more years.

ATTQOTD: I am in IT as a SAP Basis guy for an oil field services company. We are the ones who get yelled at when the system does not perform as expected by the end-users.

Of course we're to blame, it's always IT's fault even when it's not.

ATTQOTD - I hold a director level position for a global corporation. It means that I work pretty much 24/7/365, but it also means that I can adjust my schedule to allow for my workouts.

My March totals:

P90X - 22 hours
Running - 77 miles, and no foot pain!

party:

I have wanted to do both of these for some time now but I can't seem to fit them both in. When are you doing your workouts? I thought about P90X in the morning and running at night. I NEED the cross training badly this year if I want to have any shot of achieving my goals.

ATTQOTD: I'm a stay at home mom.

Got word that I am in for the Marine Corps Marathon! Totally excited and completely terrified all at once! Furthest I've gone up until now is 14 miles... How about you @IamTrike ? Did you get in?

Congrats on getting into your race. I am looking forward to hearing all about it because I want to do this one very soon if I can pull it off.

QOTD: I sell cell phones. I was a stay-at-home dad for 7 years (shout out to all you stay-at-home moms because it is a tough job). Working on where to take my career next because I don't enjoy my current job.

OK, I FINALLY registered for my races and can put my schedule together. So if you want to add them to your list LSUlakes that would be great.

6/26- BAA 10K- registration opens on 4/6 so I haven't officially signed up yet, but I will
7/3- Finish at the 50- Doing the 5k with my two oldest kids and the 10K by myself
9/10- Race to the Rock 1/2
10/2- Smuttynose 1/2- this will be my first attempt at POT for 2018 Dopey
10/16- Baystate Marathon-

I may have put this in a previous post but I think it was one of the posts deleted. But my mileage goals for the year are 1273 or more. It's the distance from my house to the Grand Floridian :teeth:. And I would like to get into the 7's for pace by the fall. I may still add some races but these are my definites. I was considering a 2nd full in November but I want to make sure I am injury free by then.

I'm so happy to hear that you are running without foot pain. You're making great steady progress towards that Dopey 2017 goal.

March Training Report

Running Mileage - 245.6 miles (NEW PR!)
Time - 35:52:00 (4th most)
Average Pace - 8:46 min/mile

Only 37 days to go until my marathon! So jealous seeing everyone else's races, wish mine was sooner! Good Luck this weekend everyone!

QOTD: What do you for a living to support your running habits?

ATTQOTD: I am a estimator for an industrial contractor. Nice job, with a good work schedule.

I'm a manager for my family's demolition company. Great job - great perks, change of scenery, flexible schedule most times, and get to work with several members of my family daily.

So excited! I leave in the morning for Disney World! My daughters are performing on Monday in Disney Springs with their dance studio and get to attend a workshop with the Disney performers. Should be a great experience! I have missed the last three QOTD; so here are my responses:

QOTD: Since we hit 100 pages yesterday, I would like to know what has been your favorite part of the thread thus far? What would you like to see more of, and anything we should avoid?

My favorite part of the thread has been the education I have received from so many knowledgable runners and I love hearing about people's races!

QOTD: What are your tips for racing a new distance? Do you try to get a fast time on your first attempt at the distance or are you more conservative to just try to finish the distance?

My first attempts at a new distance are more about completing the race under my terms; i.e. feeling good and taking in the accomplishment. I figure it is an automatic PR anyway, so focus on a good race and take it all in. I will attempt my first ultra in the fall and my hopes are to be prepared for the distance and able to finish feeling strong. As such I will not give myself a time goal.

QOTD: What do you for a living to support your running habits?

I work in the university setting as an administrator and educator. Wonderfully rewarding work, but better pay would help in supporting my running habits!

I have a 220. I'll have to see if it does that!

I get up early and do P90X, then give myself 15 minutes to recover while drinking about 4 oz of Gatorade, then change into my running gear and head out the door for my run. I don't do more than 1 legs routine/week when running. I alternate Plyo and Legs/Back, one each week.

Keep in mind that I have been doing P90X for a decade (about 6 months out of each year), and running for 3 decades (continuously, if not injured). My body is used to it. But at 49 years old, they both get harder and harder.

Thanks - I have a training plan (that you helped me build) and I am sticking to it. I feel like I can do more, but I am making myself follow the plan. By the middle of this month I will be solidly at 25 miles/week and can begin adding speed work to my routine, which will greatly help my VO2. I leave for vacation - another 9 days in WDW - and hope that I don't derail my progress. I plan on running 5 days while there - looking forward to running in the heat.

Congrats on the weekly mileage PR . Your consistent effort at self-improvement is pretty impressive.

Hogs are looking like a top 20 team, which in the SEC, means middle of the pack. They again have a really strong pitching staff, and hitters that will either be very hot or very cold. Right now 3-3 in conference, being swept at SC, and sweeping Auburn at home.

ATTQOTD: I am a Middle School Principal. Anyone here ever get sent to the principal's office? :duck:
Once! I love to tell my son about it as a warning. Actually, I had a teacher who was mad at my dad and took it out on me. He sent me to the principal's office for being out of my seat. The principal was well over six feet tall and built like a linebacker. I was the tiniest in my class and if I weighed 30 pounds, I was lucky. He had a giant paddle hanging over his desk and my mom worked in the office. She said she heard me crying long before I ever got to the office. LOL! I didn't get paddled as the principal knew that his size and booming voice and the fear of it was enough discipline for me!
