The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What is the most expensive item have you purchased for running? The least?

Most expensive: my house... I mainly bought it to store my treadmill and running gear. o_O Actually, the treadmill is probably the most expensive, which is funny because I hate treadmills and use it only when absolutely necessary.

Least expensive: aside from Gu, probably Body Glide.

QOTD: Have you ever used a coach (online or in person) and how was your experience?

ATTQOTD: Yes. After I finished couch to 5k I was looking for something to get me to the next step. I trained with coach from Fleet Feet. I thought it was great for getting ready for my first half. I then started training for a full with them but I did not agree with the workouts assigned and total mileage. At this point I educated myself enough to know running 400m repeats and a max of 30 mpw are going to leave me unprepared for a marathon. I then went at it alone. The group running was great and I recommend for anyone going for their first long race but beyond that I would look else where.

In other news, our home went on the market yesterday afternoon and had a request for a showing in 30 minutes. Unfortunately we were not able to accommodate them, buts it's a promising start. We also made our first offer on a home. Fingers crossed!

Difference between Disney and other races. Sitting here having breakfast before the Hot Chocolate 15k. Will start walking over (5 min walk) from hotel about half hour before the start. Ahhhhh.

Of course, just looked at weather. Rain starting in 45 minutes. Lol.

ATTQOTD - In my adult life nope, never used a coach. I still talk to my high school cross country coach (ultra runner himself) though....so sometimes his advice is helpful. I think I've learned enough about running that unless I was Olympic caliber a coach wouldn't really help me. I do love reading about advice and plans etc. to continue learning though.

QOTD: Have you ever used a coach (online or in person) and how was your experience?
Both - In person many moons ago to help me with my form. On-line when I got into distance running to help me with a training plan. I have not used a coach in a while now, as I now only train to finish in times easily achievable with some work and following plans that have helped me in the past. If I decide to try something new, like an ultra or Pike's Peak, I will probably use a coach again to help me develop a training plan.

Good luck!

QOTD: No coach for me as an adult. I used to run cross country in HS, so I obviously had a coach then, but that doesn't count. :)

QOTD: Have you ever used a coach (online or in person) and how was your experience?

Yes, and I love my coach! She does a great job of putting together workouts for me that have the right blend of intensity and recovery. She's very supportive, loves all the comments and feedback I provide after each training session, and has helped me hit PRs at multiple distances and events. No way I'd be tackling an Ironman without her.

Hope the house sells quickly

QOTD: Have you ever used a coach (online or in person) and how was your experience?

No, not really. The closest I've had was my PT, who is also a Disney runner, who set up the plan for my run/walk intervals to rehab my hamstring. Unless you consider following Hal Higdon's mileage plans "having a coach".

QOTD: Have you ever used a coach (online or in person) and how was your experience?

I have oftentimes wanted to get a coach, but every time I look at some of the online coaching websites, I get frustrated because you seem to have to sign-on to their specific training plans (i.e. Run S.M.A.R.T Project coaches use Jack Daniels training plans, Hansons Coaching Services of course use Hansons training plans, Run Coach uses their own plans, etc). It seems to me that a coach should be able to coach you using any training plan as a starting point (and switch to a different training plan the next cycle if the prior plan didn't seem to work for you). Now, I would expect that he/she (along with your input) would want to make changes to any training plan you use based on his/her philosophies as well as your current fitness level and strengths/weaknesses, but I don't think you should be restricted to only use their plans. To me, it feels like they are basically just taking their off-the-shelf training plans with the only individualization being calculating the right training paces based on your recent races. I can do that without paying all the $$$.

I fully admit that maybe I just don't understand coaching since I've never had one, so I look forward to hearing other's experiences.

QOTD: Garmin 210 with HR strap and foot pod- most expensive. Sample size of Body Glide- least.

Adding- most worthwhile: the TheraPaw bootie we got for Max's right front foot. His worst corns are there, and it is the difference between walking and not walking some days.

Super happy with my Half time today! Was aiming for 2:55 (even went old school with a pace band!) and finished in 2:50:50! That beats my PR by 8:00!

ATQOTD : nope. Not yet anyway. I start marathon training soon though. So we shall see. Not many options in this hick town so I'm probably on my own (follow JG marathon plan).

QOTD: What is the most expensive item have you purchased for running? The least?

Most expensive was my Dopey bib this year. Least expensive would probably be gels (if you buy 20 at my running store, you get 4 for free).

QOTD: Have you ever used a coach (online or in person) and how was your experience?

In a way. I joined our local running store's running camp so while it didn't involve my own personal coach, training measures were personalized for me based upon my fitness level and the ability to improve. I improved vastly from this - my 10K pace improved over 3 minutes/mile after one running camp session, and I met my BRF who has similar running pace/philosophy as me. I'm still not speedy by any stretch, but at this point I'm simply looking for improvement and several rounds of camp have definitely helped. Plus, it's nice to let someone else figure out your workouts for you! ;) And now when I go into the running store, they greet me by name, like Norm in Cheers.

I had a half marathon race today and went into it treating it as a training run. However, I was on track to PR when disaster struck at mile 12, blood sugar level was threatening to crash (I am very familiar with my particular signs), so had to slow down to a walk for a bit, eat a Gu (which I felt completely silly doing at mile TWELVE of a half marathon), but I was able to get going again. I missed my PR by a minute or two. I think. Official times haven't been posted yet. So I was a bit disappointed, but on the other had, I'd signed up for this half marathon on a whim, so yay? :)

Congrats on the PR!!!

In my running career, no, I always just self-coached or used a plan like Hansons. That all changed when I registered for Ironman...no way I'd tackle this beast on my own! Interestingly enough, I have a female coach just like @FFigawi ...and she kicks my butt! It has been a nice addition training for Boston as she has helped me prepare for the marathon while still having Ironman as my 'A' race...I would be lost otherwise.
