The Running Thread - 2016

I think you need to up the level on this a little and do a whole The Disney Afternoon weekend. They could run it similar to Princess weekend where the themes of the medals change from year to year. One year DuckTales, then TailSpin, then Rescue Rangers, etc. I might make it an annual thing if they did that.
Oh rescue rangers please!!!!!

I did almost posted Disney Afternoon! Through in some Darkwing with really rare characters like Bushroot and that would be epic!

ATTQOTD: I've always thought a Pixar themed race weekend would be really neat...(see someone already posted that!).

How about a Disney Classics theme......? Fantasia Mickey would be cool.

I'll throw out a QOTD for you inspired by our current WDW racers this weekend.
What obscure Disney thing would you want want to see on a race medal...like you'd register immediately?

Let's see:

On a Medal: Sorcerer Mickey

Overall Race Weekend Theme: Pirates of the Caribbean
> 5k medal: Capt. Jack & Davey Jones
> 10k medal: The Black Pearl
> 1/2 medal: Spinner with pirates on one side and skeletal pirates on the other
> Challenge medal: The Cursed Coin

I'd be in for either in a heartbeat.

Well it wasn't Disney but I earned a really awesome pirate medal today (and 2 cool pirate coin medals yesterday)

This is an awesome idea. I would prefer this to the Star Wars theme, and I love Star Wars.

Good morning folks! For those that had a race this past weekend, how did it go? I wasn't able to check in much this weekend as we are in the process of organizing our home to put on the market as well as looking for a new house. In order to get things done, my running had to take a back seat over the weekend.

QOTD: How do you feel about out and back courses or even sections of a course where you have to make a U-turn?

ATTQOTD: I dislike making a U-turn during a race. I feel like it take away all my momentum and takes a lot of effort to get going again. I also dislike covering the same ground for a race. I like loops much better.

I don't like out and back races for the sole reason of I like to see different views during my run. I don't really like out and back runs during training...I'm always trying to mix it up so I get different views during my runs.

I also don't like races that have a starting point at one location and an ending point at a different location miles away. I like when they loop around and finish close to where they started...it makes it much simpler to figure out where to park, where to meet family, etc.

QOTD: How do you feel about out and back courses or even sections of a course where you have to make a U-t

Doesn't bother me to much since so many courses do the out n back.. I like being able to see where xyz mile is..

I don't like when it's a half mile etc on a random side street before returning on the main course...

Had family in from out of town this weekend so not much chance to check in...catching up on the QOTD...

QOTD: Has anyone been a part of an organized running club? What was it like? How often do they meet and around what times? Do you have to pay or is it is a free service?

Yes, I belong to our local Galloway group. It's a pretty big group (usually somewhere around 80-100 people) although it varies year to year. We've been in the group for 4 years now. I love it. I'm a very social runner and I've made many running friends being part of the group. We meet just once a week on Saturday mornings for our long runs. DH and I are one of the group pace leaders, so since we are leaders we don't pay. Before we were leaders, there was a fee, but I don't recall how much.

QOTD: Do you stretch either before or after your runs? Does your routine vary for a race?

ATTQOTD: I pretty much never stretch. As someone else mentioned, Galloway is not a fan of stretching. I do walk for a short distance to warm up. Sometimes after a really long run, I might do a few dynamic stretches (usually hip flexor type things) if I feel tight, but normally I don't do anything.

I was thinking something with Hades (just because I love Hades), but then I read that suggestion of a Pirates themed weekend and I'm totally LOVING that idea.

QOTD: How do you feel about out and back courses or even sections of a course where you have to make a U-turn?

ATTQOTD: Do not like them AT ALL. I like variety in what I see during a course so I just find out and backs to be boring. I even dislike them on training runs, although I obviously do that a fair amount. I dislike them in a race because I'm a middle to back of the pack runner, so when I start getting tired, it's discouraging to me to see people going past me on their way back and thinking about how far I still have to go to get to where they are.

I don't mind Out and Backs or U-turns, I do them in training runs all the time so it's no big deal, it's not like I'm flyin' at 5 mm & will crash if I take the turn too fast;). I didn't even mind the little out and back during the marathon this year, maybe it's because I felt a little breeze during that time that felt really good.

Most of my training runs are out and back, so I don't mind my races having this element. I am far more interested in where the course takes me than whether or not it doubles back on itself. If it is a nice route, it is still a nice route coming back. But that applies once - no more. I don't do multiple repeated loop training runs or races.

Don't care for them either. I was out of town this weekend and my long run called for 20+ miles...not knowing the territory quite well enough to come up with some nice elaborate route I just did a standard out and back, basically running along the coast of Lake Ontario. The out went great and I was hitting my paces and crushing the hills. I felt a bit of a tailwind and knew I would be dealing with a headwind on the way back...no problem though, right? WRONG. I turned around and immediately said "$*&#@"...the headwind was 20mph with gusts (and there were plenty of gusts) getting over 30mph. Of course it was cold and wet on top of the wind. This is the biggest reason I hate out and backs :(

Oh, one thing to add about racing an out and back that I do really like...seeing the other runners! Like that stretch coming out of WWoS when you can cheer and encourage the runners heading in (cause we ALL need encouragement heading into WWoS)...

I always like to cheer other runners on and go in for high fives wherever I can and an out and back course is great for that!

If I'm going for speed/time and the first half of the course was easy for me, then I don't mind an out and back because mentally I know I can handle the back part. But I hate it if I'm having a bad out and then have to do the back...its a bit defeating.
For races where I'm not really racing for speed (un-timed fun runs or new distance I'm trying to just complete or one I'm running for the location)...then I'd MUCH rather have a loop. Half the reason why I run in races instead of just doing my normal neighborhood free run is for the change of scenery/atmosphere.

I don't mind a tiny out and back section as part of the larger race because I do like to watch the really fast people blow by. And I don't mind the cheers or high fives from the other side.

As one of the runners you are probably cheering on, I can say I really do appreciate that. It helps a little with that depressing feeling I get wishing I was where you are. :)

I like looped courses the best but I don't mind out and backs. I enjoy seeing the front runners coming back and the opportunity to cheer other people on :) Point to point courses are the hardest just in terms of logistics for getting back to transportation, etc.

Cheering other runners on boosts me as much as receiving cheers...I can't understand why so many "fast" people take themselves so seriously, even at Disney races! You can be very competitive and still have fun and support each other out on the course.

The fastest I ever get is the "front of the middle" of the pack. So a lot of times during the out and backs when I am going out I see all the speedy people and when I'm heading back, it's the walkers that I am seeing on the other side. I would say generally us middle packers cheer on the leaders and then we cheer on the walkers, but there's not a ton of the fast people cheering on us. I don't take it personally, I just attribute it to their extreme focus at trying to maintain a great pace. So every once in awhile when I get the random high five from a fast person it really does make my day.

Now I will divulge that in tiny local races with out and backs, I do try to count the number of women age 35-39 ahead of me but that never works because all "in shape" runners look 21 (to me at least.)
