The Running Thread - 2016

I made a few minor changes to the opening post incase anyone has viewed it recently. Upcoming races will be in green, and updated on each Monday for the next week. At the bottom of the post I added a stat section just to keep count of the different distances we have run as a group, as well as PR's and if a spot for a BQ for those of you blessed to run at that speed. I'm also thinking of adding a total racing miles in there as well. What do yall think? Anything else you would like to see in the OP? Thanks!
Just went back and reread the OP...man we have a lot of races already listed! Pretty cool and I like the new touches as well @LSUlakes

Now I am on my laptop and have time to catch up.

QOTD: Do people at work know you run? Do they ever ask about it? What do they think about it?

Some do and some we even run together in smaller local events. Some just think I am completely nuts.

QOTD: What tips do you have for chaffing? What stories? When running distance, what has rubbed you raw... especially things you did not expect.

I have to say the one time that loaded up on Body Glide it did rub me the wrong way compared to all of the runs I have done without.

QOTD: Do you have a shoe rotation or just one pair at a time?

I have 2 primary event pairs, one pair ready to replace the older event pair and 1 pair still in the box just saying wear me. :lmao:

QOTD: Have you had any mishaps with your GPS that has frustrated you on a run/race?

I have to say I have been very pleased with my Forerunner610 for the last 3 years. Really any mishaps for me have been user initiated.

QOTD: What is your total mileage for January?

About 50 miles for the month. That is including the marathon.

QOTD: When not training for a particular race, how far is your long run for the week?

My runs lately have only been in the 3 to 5 mile range even while training for events now. Life events happen. When I do have the time the runs are between 5 to 9 miles all days.

QOTD: What is the single most important thing you have learned from running?

Like others have said. Not to skimp on any of the hard work that is evolved in order to reach your dreams!!!

QOTD: Inevitably, people ask me "how far do you run"... of course, it's not the same every day. So what do you say when they ask you that?

Those that do ask I will say right now 3 to 5 miles but it can change.

Anyone ever use stabilicers or yaktrax? I didn't know these existed until I read an email communication from upcoming race. I don't plan on running with anything new this weekend, but wondering just for future Feb/march running outside what people think of these. I've googled to see what they look like. Does it feel like you're are wearing cleats?

YES! I use Stabl-Icers and LOVE them. I bought the running-specific model as they have a velcro strap that will go over the top of the shoe (other models do not include this if I recall). They are better than shoes alone when used in freshly fallen snow. However if it's hardened snow and/or ice, they work fantastic for the whole run!

If you do buy a pair, after a few runs, beware of the "spikes" as depending on you landing, some will wear down fast than others and its good to rotate them. And replacing the spikes are easy as well, they simply unscrew.

QOTD: What is your favorite distance to run that is not a race?

ATTQOTD: I like 7 miles because it gives me enough time to clear my head and feel like I had a good workout. It's enough distance to get a lot of different types of workouts in and rarely last over an hour, so no need for water or special pre run meal of any sort.

QOTD: What is your favorite distance to run that is not a race?

10 miles. Something about double digits. While I usually only get one maybe 2 of these runs in a month, a 10-miler I can do with minimal or no fueling. But anything longer I'd probably be carrying extra stuff I usually wouldn't have on a run (fuel, water, belt, etc.).

QOTD: What is your favorite distance to run that is not a race?

I'll lower the bar a bit and say 3.3. I'm kind of superstitious/OCD about the number 3 so I run that distance a fair bit. Also, it is slightly more than a 5K which is kind of my baseline for feeling like I've done something.

QOTD: What is your favorite distance to run that is not a race?

I'm liking 4-5 miles a lot. Long enough to get that "steady pace, zoned out, relaxed" feeling and not too short that I end up feeling like racing for no reason during a training run.
But mostly because it fits nicely and easily under an hour, which is helpful on busy weekends.

Unless we are talking about treadmill running and then I have no favorite because UGH TREADMILL. So the above is about running outside :)

I know this thread seems to be heavily male populated, but just be thankful that all you guys don't have a week every month where your legs feel like cinder blocks. And no matter how hard you try to schedule races to not fall during this time...sometimes mother nature is a #$^tch
But my only option is no excuses and I'm gonna run my hardest tomorrow despite this set back. But I'm allowing myself to be grumpy about it today.

Thank you for reading my TMI. You may return to talking about other body parts.

10k. Even if it is not a race. I'm not sure why, just became my "I need to get a good run in" distance.

QOTD: What is your favorite distance to run that is not a race?

I agree with several others that 6-7 miles is a nice sweet spot for me. That's probably why it was my answer for the earlier question about the long run distance when not following a training plan.

ATTQOTD: Probably 7 miles - there's a very scenic paved trail near my house that runs along the river.

I totally understand! Surprisingly though, I have had some of my best runs/races during this time, so you never know, you could totally rock it tomorrow.

QOTD: What is your favorite distance to run that is not a race?

ATTQOTD: 2-3, 8-10 or over 15. Yeah, I know that sounds odd, but at any distance I run, miles 4-6 are the absolute worst, so stopping before mile 4 or getting a few miles after 6 makes for a far more pleasant experience. The 10K distance is my most despised, by far; the run ends smack-dab when I'm feeling worst! Oddly, when marathon training I discovered that every run beyond 15 miles was pretty awesome - the longer I go, the more zen-like I feel.
