The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: Flash Forward. Today is November 14th, 2017. When you look back on the last year of your running career, what do you want to say about it? Limit of 5 words or less.

ATTQOTD: I kept going.

Last week was my first full week of running coming off of injury. I managed 18 miles. Now I'm just hoping I can progress without aggravating anything.

ATTQOTD: Good start. Just keep trying.

Ran the Richmond half marathon on Saturday. Very cool race! The course is mostly flat and some of the best crowd support I have ever seen. It was a chilly start (in the high 30s) but was sunny the whole time. I think I am going to have to rethink my fueling strategy. Same thing happened to me during the half I ran last month but I just figured it was a fluke. I had a gel at mile 5 and ended up with a not so good feeling in my stomach from miles 8 to 10.5. It wasn't a "I have to go to the bathroom" or a "I think I might throw up" feeling but just not good. Made sure to take it with plenty of fluids. Ended up finishing a lot stronger the last two miles of the race but the stomach issues made me miss my time goal that I wanted. According to my watch, I finished in 2:16. A friend of my dad runs ultras and recommends a product called Tailwind to drink. He says he used to have stomach issues and hasn't had them since using this product. Anyone ever used it before or heard anything about it?

I used Tailwind for my Ironman and love it! It's easy to mix, easy to drink, and gives you all the calories, salt, and electrolytes you need. No stomach or GI issues either.

ATTQOTD: Running for fun after PR

Now I know how hard it is to tweet!

Do you have it already pre-mixed or do you mix it on the run? Does it take a long time to mix in the middle of a race? Not that I'm doing tris etc, just curious.

So how does it work in a race situation? Do you have to carry a bottle yourself or a Camelbak? How much do you typically need for a marathon and how does using it affect hydration station usage? I'm asking because while I can tolerate one or two gels with no issues, when I got up into the 5-6 gel range for my last marathon (needed 214+g carbs in race) my stomach got painfully upset towards the end. So much so that I actually skipped my last gel. I would be interested in trying this if I can work out the mechanic.

Highest annual mileage, injuries suck.

Edit: actually, I need to change my answer to "I'm an idiot" because I didn't read the question correctly. I was looking back on the last year.

New answer: Having fun and improving myself.

ATTQOTD: Completed my 1st half! :-)

Finished my very 1st 10K this weekend in 1:11:45. Not the time I was hoping for, but happy I finished and was definitely not last! I accomplished a goal of getting a proof of time for the PHM. It was Coca-Cola themed and they had the best cake and cold diet coke post-race... my love language!

It was a smaller race and the course was pretty boring. The wind really picked up about 20 minutes into the race and then we ran into a very strong headwind for the last 3 miles. It was completely miserable and I felt like I wasn't even moving. I've tried researching how wind affects pace, but can't find a clear answer. Any ideas?

I love tailwind! I bought the sampler on Amazon to decide which flavor I liked best, then bought a big bag of that (tropical buzz won).

@FFigawi Congrats on Ironman!!! You crushed it!
:cheer2:

(I'm behind I know, just catching up with this thread)
