The Running Thread - 2016

LOL, thanks Mike! I see myself more as a Ludwig Von Drake (more science/kooky/wordy, less doctor). You're easily Dash from the Incredibles (fastest Disney character?).

So that's how he podiums so much at triathlons....he's running on top of the water! It all makes sense now!

As a peer to @disneydaydreamer33 in her category, I'll throw a nomination her way!

Now is there a category for incessant rambling about all topics and too long race reports? Maybe the Anna? I'll sign up for that race :)

QOTD: Do you foam roll or stick roll or use both? If so, how often, what areas, etc?

I own The Stick and it works great when I use it ... you know, when I'm sore and that's when I remember. Also, I'm really good at nagging my bf that he should use it when he's sore. lol I've thought about getting a foam roller but there are so many to choose from and I really have no idea what I'm looking for or what the difference is between all of them. So then I stop. lol

Awesome idea... now I just need to invent a very obscure category that I might have a shot at winning... like maybe the "most improved with the fewest races on the flattest courses in the Midwest in the 46-47 year-old range" category.

That was my first thought! I was considering "Most cancelled races due to unrelated injuries in the 40 year old female range". I feel like this year has been a game of injury "Whac-A-Mole"!

Yes! I love this idea! My obscure category would be "Runner who complains the most and runs the least" or "Poster who always seems to have problems. Just go run dummy." lol. I love this thread.

A new poll every week or something would be a great way to ensure voting. :)

I prefer ublock over adblock and it's made surfing the web so much easier.

Oooh. I will try this. Adblock doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be ...

A few days behind here due to a work trip! Nice to be home, and looking forward to a run tomorrow after too much sitting on planes, etc!

I do yoga once a week, and do some weights twice a week (I do a random of YouTube videos from Fitzness)

I also recently bought a foam roller, and try to use it after I run.

Actually, I had some serious knee pain for a few weeks - I suspect some knee bursitis. I credit the cross training and stretching with helping get rid of the issue.

This week we have the following folks with races:

17 - @SueInBoston - Salem Wicked Half Marathon (NG/ N/A)
17 - @NurseRunner - USAF Half Marathon (3:10:00 / N/A)
17 - @foxontherun15 - USAF Half Marathon (NG / N/A)
17 - @mrsgryphon - Gulf Beach Half Marathon (2:12:09 / N/A)
17 - @surfde22 - Stillwater Log Run 10 Miler (NG / N/A)
17 - @jhorstma - Dulles Days 10k (59:59 / N/A)
17 - @Slogger - Dulles Runway 10k (55:00 / N/A)
18 - @michigandergirl - Lake MI Credit Union Bridge Run 10 Miler (1:48:00 / N/A)
18 - @Anisum - Run the Vineyards Fall Trail 8k (59:59 / N/A)
18 - @CherieFran - Navy Air Force Half Marathon (1:50:00 / N/A)
18 - @dis_or_dat - Half Moon Bay Half Marathon (1:42 / N/A)

If you would like to revise your goal or no longer able to run the race, just let me know and I will make the adjustment. Good luck to all of you and safe travels to and from the race! I look forward to hearing how the race goes!

Good luck everyone!

ATTQOTD: I have a trigger point foam roller, and a trigger point ball. I use both on my calves, and then mostly just the roller on my glutes, quads, IT Band, hamstring and back. I try to roll at least my calves before runs and try to roll everything after runs, but don't always have time. The ball is also good for the piriformis if that starts acting up, as well as the bottom of my foot.

I used to lover Runners World for videos and even articles with slideshows of workouts, but the ads have gotten to be too much for me. And I don't get why they don't make their videos like "Iron Strength" or "Yoga for Runners" available to purchase digitally, only with DVDS. I trust and have liked their website stuff in the past, but I no longer have a DVD player, I just stream or download stuff.

If you didn't add the "female range" I think I would have had you in the cancelled races category.

I think the categories need to be pretty broad, more than simply percentage improvement in a given race distance. There are quite a few people who read this thread but don't speak up because they feel intimidated by all the race and fast pace talk. Giving bragging rights based on races isn't really fair to them. Maybe one approach could be to ask people to self-enter in a particular category once we determine what those will be. The people who want to race can enter the race categories and other who don't can enter ones more suited to them, maybe biggest improvement in training miles/pace or something to allow them to feel proud of what they've done.

I know not of what you speak :rolleyes1

I agree with John. I think the idea of recognition is a great one but we don't want to turn any of the "shy" people away.

QOTD: I have a stick and two foam rollers. I was not good at using them consistently. I had asked on this thread back in the beginning of the summer about the R8 Recovery Roller because I was looking for recommendations. Nobody responded but I bought it anyway.

This thing is glorious. It works on my tightest spots better than the foam rollers and the stick. It works the knots out of my calves so much better. It works my hamstrings better than the foam roller. It works the IT Band, hip flexors, and even the muscles next to the shin bone. The major complaint I have is that it pulls my leg hair but once you get used to it you don't even notice it and for the ladies it obvious isn't an issue. But, because I don't need to lay on the floor to use it I can sit in my bed while watching TV and use it, so it actually gets put to use.

Good luck to everyone.

@LSUlakes....guess I got the name of my race wrong...it should be Dulles Days 10k.....
not sure about my goal or if I will be able to run the race. Stress fractures have hit hard this month and I'm not to supposed to run (aarrgh!)

I want to say a few things to any of the shy runners lurking here and not saying anything. I am one of you. My fastest time remains 3:05 in the Disneyland 1/2 although I don't consider that my PR since it contained no stops whatsoever and every race since has contained multiple picture and/or character stops. Don't be intimidated by how fast you aren't. Instead, take advantage of the opportunity to learn from some very fast runners who don't care how fast you aren't.

I can honestly say that my first 1/2 marathon was not a "fun" experience. It was something I had to overcome, endure, and accomplish. But every race since then has truly been fun. And part of that fun came from learning from runners here about how to cope with the mental part of the game and see the bigger picture. Don't let your fear of how fast you aren't hold you back. Because at the end of the day if you're wearing your medal around Disney, nobody cares that you were "slow." I've tried to persuade many who admired the medal that earning it wasn't the impossible task their mind made it out to be.

Difficult, yes? Impossible. Never. Walt Disney said it best: "It's kind of fun to do the impossible."

ATTQOTD: I have two foam rollers. The normal size one and then a tiny one. The tiny one is for my feet and I used it regularly until about a month ago and need to get back into it. The other one I only use rarely, even though I can feel how good it is for me. To be honest, I find the foam rolling process so much hard work. All this crawling around on the floor. I always end up with the rolled parts of my body feeling great and other parts feeling exhausted (especially arms and core). I know if I did it regularly, it would help train those bits...

Don't forget that the Muppet's are isney as well...you would make an excellent Dr Bunsen Honeydew. You just need to find someone to act as your Beaker :)

You won't have this problem once you start doing triathlon...you'll be shaving those legs!

This would be my kind of race if they included a beer too

Ugh this was me last night...had the bright idea of throwing down a couple slices of pizza before my trail run.

This is perfect, you hit the nail on the head. At the very top of the first page of this thread is our mission statement and it is bang-on with what you just posted...

"Seriously, nobody here cares how fast or far you run. We all just love running and, of course, Disney" @ZellyB

Welcome to this place, all are welcome :thumbsup2

As someone else who has just recently come out of lurkdom in this thread...bravo!! :yay:

Has anyone ever used those vibratey machines that you sometimes see at expos? I literally have no idea what they are called, but they look like sanders for your car. My father-in-law volunteered me to get a demo from a guy at the booth last year and it was very strange yet kind of awesome. He used it on my "It band" area which at the time I didn't know existed. They were like hundreds of dollars though.
My sister tried one at the WDW Marathon Expo last year and loved it, but didn't want to spend the money. She looked online to see if it was cheaper and people actually recommended buying an orbital car polisher- it works the same or is fairly similar, and is a lot cheaper! She probably spent around $30 for it.

QOTD: How has your running or racing been influenced by anything you have read on this forum?

ATTQOTD: This forum has helped me stay on track or get me back on when I start to slack. I enjoy reading everyone's thoughts and experiences with the QOTD's and other topics that come up on a day to day basis.

I'm not fast enough to worry about shaving my legs. Not much chance of roadside accident over here either. ;)

My running and racing hasn't really changed any, but my weekly habits have. I found I couldn't go around suggesting everyone do yoga and keep slacking on it myself.
